Naseir Upshur trending FSU

Submitted by Mitchamaniac on
With the departure of Isaac Nauta from his FSU commitment, the pressure has been applied on Upshur. I noticed he has been trending FSU, receiving 7 CBs today alone. Upshur will not be attending the BBQ. He is visiting FSU next Wednesday with his father and two brothers. Things are not looking well. Edit: Forgot to add he is no longer announcing a commitment on Aug 8th.

Yes, that's right.  He was always planning on visiting FSU and ASU.  He is just doing his FSU trip earlier.  He never planned to come to the BBQ and so there is no change there.  He did 2 unofficials to Michigan on his own dime and he is going to come again on an official.

Nobody called him a jerk. Why don't you learn to read and perhaps comprehend a bit. He merely noted the fact that Upshur was obviously not eager to compete with the other TE. That's all, no one is saying he's a coward or a "jerk". Stop reading into things that are not there.

Recruiting a bunch of 4-stars where we are "2nd choice" is not a good thing. In most positions, would rather see a high ceiling 3-star that is 100% all-in with something to prove versus a soft-commit 4-star. The later sounds too much like the Hoke era. Having said that, Upshur hasn't visited FSU yet so jury is still out. Mitchell has us neck-and-neck with the enemy, that concerns me even more. And the Corley development is interesting - he seems like the big monkey wrench in here. Could Lavert Hill flip and take Donnie with him? Word out of summer camp is that O'Korn is awesome and will help turn things around quickly in 2016/17. I think Hill's brother is working hard on Lavert and may have convinced him that Harbaugh is going to make this turnaround happen quickly in 2016/17. But he needs some new great young athletes to be ready by then. Corley could play a ton as a freshman and start as a soph at UM and that won't happen at MSU or OSU or even Tennessee. And Corley's father for sure wants him at UM (probably for the degree). Being in-state, they understand the war that is the B1G East and the high potential "legacy" of being part of a turnaround for the Wolverines. I think we have a decent shot at Corley. TE is a need, but not so immediate in 2016/17 so long as 4-star Wheatley develops well. Having a Butt to Wheatley/Bunting/Hill transition may be good enough at this position. We really need mature big play guys at WR and Corley would fit that bill. Reminds me of an Braylon Edwards body-type with even better hands. Mitchell could fit that bill as well, but seems to need more development than Corley.

"Doesn't look like (he'll make the trip),” Gary’s mother Jennifer Coney said. “The group he was supposed to travel with isn't going. Just found out yesterday."
While that still leaves time to make alternative travel plans, his next trip to Ann Arbor will likely be for an official visit.

Still a chance!

What's happening with recruiting that we're getting whipped like this? We had three highly regarded TEs in three classes with a defensive line coach in Hoke and now that we have a highly successful NFL coach at that position we have nobody at the TE position who wants to play here.

Sorry.  I forgot.  Why play the games when you can just average the recruiting rankings of the players and get your answer ahead of time?

I'd hate to think we have a staff that could identify and develop talent.

Who was it who said "Jim Harbaugh: College Football's biggest winner"?

You need players too to win as well as coach. I'm sick and tired of recruits we have been in on in basketball spurning us to go to Kentucky and Duke and those schools winning championships.  If the same thing happens in football as our miss rate has been higher than I can ever remember at Michigan for this class, they'll wind up at places like Alabama, Florida State, and of course Ohio State. Guess which teams were in the playoffs this year? Guess which teams have won the last three championships? Even your poster child for recruiting not mattering in MSU has a losing record to Ohio State and has never played in a NCG. Lets cut the bs and realize we need the best players coming in to win.

If it pisses you off so much, just stop following recruiting. We've been pretty bad for the better part of a decade, and until we start winning again we're going to lose more head-to-head recruiting battles against the FSUs and Alabamas of the world than we're going to win. If you can't accept that, then take a step back.

In basketball we've had the success and our recruiting has gotten worse from the days of us getting Mitch McGary or Derrick Walton. In football, we did fine last year recruiting with a coach on the hot seat. Butch Jones, James Franklin, Charlie Strong, and Brady Hoke had great first year classes. Why can Harbaugh not after being on tv late in the NFL playoffs for the last 4 years?

Okay dude, you have to understand that Harbaugh hasn't a coached a single game yet. Sure recruits know what he did in the NFL and what he did at Stanford, but they have no idea what the situation at Michigan is. What's Michigan's depth chart? What kind of academic expectations does it have? What kind of expectations does Harbaugh have for his players? How long will it take for Michigan to be comparable to the likes Alabama, LSU, Florida St, OSU, and even MSU? These are the kind of questions they are looking at.

Once Harbaugh gets a season under him, they'll see the type of things Harbaugh wants to do at Michigan and recruits will flock to it. People need to have patience! You can't just expect 5 stars to drop just because Harbaugh is here. I mean, Harbaugh is good, but so is Saban, Fisher, Meyer, Dantonio, Miles. And they have a set system that already works. That's the competition Harbaugh is going against.

We've had success is basketball the last few years, but not on the same level as Kentucky and Duke (and not for as long either). Plus, Kentucky is dirty as hell and Beilein is clean as a whistle, so it's not like there's a level playing field there. As for football, we've sucked since most of these kids were 8 or 9 years old, and tradition only takes you so far. Just be happy we now have the right man for the job and try to enjoy the ride. Letting recruiting success, or lack thereof, upset you just isn't worth it. I'm not trying to be snarky or anything, but if it's pissing you off so much you really should take a step back, play with your kids more, go for a run, or pick up a new hobby. Making an emotional investment in high schoolers' decisions just isn't a good idea.

Hoke's first class full was OK (rated 7th overall) but he benefited greatly from OSU having a down year.  We never would have signed Kalis or Strobel, and possibly Bolden if OSU was not a mess that year.  Remove them, and the class drops out of the top 10. The class had 13 members at 3 stars or lower.

His best class came after the Sugar Bowl win.  Gotta show it on the field and the recruiting follows.

James Franklin's first full year (2015), Penn State ranked 15 overall. With no top 100 players. That's very close to Harbaugh is going to finish, and I would expect Harbaugh to actually finish a little better.

At Stanford, here is what Harbaugh's classes ranked according to Rivals

2007 - 50th

2008 - 51st

2009 - 20th

2010 - 26th

He did OK at Stanford with that kind of talent.  Stars matter to some degree.  I just don't think they matter that much.  Harbaugh is going to win.  And win big.

When the winning comes, so will the better recruiting.

I was asking about other options because we know Harbaugh likes to operate multiple tight end sets. As of right now, we have a general lack of playmaking tight ends on our roster so I'm assuming if Upshur doesn't work out, we would go for another tight end. So does anyone know of any Plan B options that Harbaugh/ Mich are still evaluating?
