My White Boy, Minus White Boy

Submitted by Seth on
So going into this 2009-10 college season, more so than any previous year, I was totally wound up for Michigan sports. This blog had something to do with it. But it was also this thought that a Ninja offense with Michigan-level talent would finally be unleashed upon the Big Ten. That our Lazarus of a basketball program would do something with its resurrection other than walk headlong into the next speeding train. That the fall of MSU and retention of a sick collection of talent would propel Michigan Hockey from an elite CCHA program to the elite NCAA program. I was marrying this program, and planning the reception. But someone forgot to invite the groom: (original: http://www.mywhiteboy.com/?p=451) Am I starting to sound like a bandwagon fan? Well, how do we know if any of us are bandwagon Michigan fans, really? I mean, we're talking about a wagon that's been rolling along for like 150 years. I know I've been guilty of bandwagonism in the past. Certainly I do it with the Pistons. I can trust my Tiger loyalty because I held tough through some really bad years. I know I have no Lions loyalty because I've never really cared. Red Wings: same boat as Big Blue. All I know is that something broke inside me this week. Something about Vincent Smith tearing a ligament, while our best defensive player says he really really really hopes to be in the NFL, and one of three dire remaining spots in the 2009 class is filled with a Kovacs clone (no offense to the new guy), and for the first time in my life, I wondered if the M fandom was causing more pain than I could reasonably expect to be repaid in joy. And this was keeping me awake, when I have to be up really early tomorrow for Adopt-a-Shelter, wasting away precious sleep hours on my favorite corners of the Web, doodling around on GiMP, and pondering ultimate goods of M fandom. And here's where I came down: I don't have a choice. If Donovan leaves, and Vincent Smith can't play, and the recruits are weenie-sized lost puppies, and Ohio State wins a 7th game in a row, I'm still going to be rationalizing and cheering, and convincing myself each week that Michigan will never lose again, because, hell man, I've been through 3-9 and 5-7 and I still haven't had a whiff of ennui. If Michigan goes down the toilet, I'm going to feel really shitty. So at least I've got that settled. g'nite

I honestly don't see what everyone is worried about with the Vincent Smith injury. The kid averaged about 3.6 yards per carry against non-Baby Seal U. opponents. That's not horrible, but it sure doesn't hint at impending greatness. The Warren thing is a little more troubling, but a) it's not final and b) Woolfolk can be a good corner, too. With the influx of corners, I fully believe that one of those guys can step and make some plays. Last year we had about 4 scholarship corners once Cissoko got kicked off the team. In 2010 we'll have about 9 or 10 scholarship corners.

He's my favorite player. Smith is also Misopogal's new Wolvy-crush now that McGuffie's gone.* Something about Smith sets off my Mike Hart fuzzy wuzzlies. I know (by which I mean "hope") I'm not alone in this. * It's not the No. 2 jersey. It's that I tell her Guy X is really short and she's short so she identifies.

Whichever position Woolfolk does NOT play, it will be because players have emerged to solidify that position. If Woolfolk plays safety, that means that Turner or Christian or Witty or someone else has stepped up to play well at cornerback. If Woolfolk plays cornerback, that means that Turner is playing safety or Vladimir Emilien has fully recovered from his knee injury/surgery and is ready to contribute.

Woolfolk is okay at corner. But with him there, we have first-year starters, Kovacs, or Mike Williams at safety again. And who care about the raw number of scholarship corners for next year when all of them are inexperienced and none of them can be reasonably expected to perform close to Warren's level. The secondary is going to be as bad, and possibly worse, than it was this year. That's something of a cause for concern to me. At least we can lean on our linebac- ... well, Martin and Roh should be good! On the bright side, I agree that the impact of Smith's injury for next year is being overblown a bit.

Nice post, I know I have felt the same exact way. I will love this program whether they go 12-0 or 0-12(please don't go 0-12.)My girlfriend always says I put my love of Michigan sports ahead of her and you know what, she is right. GO BLUE!

Well, it's because Michigan sports don't yell at you, tell you how to drive, expect a response after they make a statement, bitch at you for stuff that they do as well, complain about every single one of their friends, ask you to do something for them and yell at you for doing it wrong, ask you what you are thinking, ask what is going on during a movie over and over again that they haven't been paying attention to and look at you like you are the annoying one when this bothers you, complain about the service at every single restaurant you go to, declare that they need to lose weight over and over again and continue to eat crap, look at you as if you are a complete idiot after you load a dishwasher and make you question if you have any idea how to actually function as a grown ass man. This is why I love Michigan sports more anyway. Gawd I hope I am not alone in this.

I agree with your first sentence, but unfortunately I think it's more of rarity to find someone who doesn't hit a few of the bullet points above. FWIW, Michigan football did make me change the channel from Michigan football this season late in the Illinois and Penn State games, something a woman has never made me do.

These years will strip away the fair weather fans, and when we are back on top, only we will be able to truly appreciate the glory of our rise. The rest will come rushing back to enjoy the winning, and we will tell tales of these sleepless nights with pride. But god do I wish the basketball team could have given us a little reprieve.

For the record, I'll be happy to see the fair weather fans leave. RichRod has been down this road before and you can see the development. When we're destroying tuofOSU next year (it's coming, believe me) I'll be there to celebrate.

Dave Johnson, largely anonymous Michigan 157 lb wrestler, beat Nebraskas number one ranked and defending national champion Jordan Burroughs, his first loss in like 2 years. Yes, it was a freak injury forfeit caused by Burroughs losing a tooth, but we gotta take what we can get.

It all boils down to that video where he sheds off 100+ UM tacklers in the UM drill. Unfortunately, that was the warning sign of just how bad the D was going to be that they couldn't tackle at all. And don't misunderstand. I think Smith is a baller and it absolutely sucks he's out but if that video didn't exist, I don't think we'd have all the love that is out there for him right now.

It sums up pretty well where I'm at. Man these are really trying times. It's beginning to feel like a perpetual beatdown. But what choice do we have? We're the M fans. If we're true to our colors then we have no choice but to persevere. I'm all in. That's not to say I'm happy with everything our coaches do. But overall I believe in our various programs and I believe we just need to tough it out through these pretty sick times.
