A word of advice for Michigan_Marc. Somewhere in the bowels of mgoblog (curse the ridiculously inept search function) Brian frowns upon citing or ripping on Drew Sharp et al.

One general principle is that once I have eviscerated someone for excessive stupidity I institute a ban on further ripping unless something really egregious comes up. A partial list of these people:  Tom Dienhart; Matt Hayes; Dennis Dodd; Anyone associated with College Football News; Drew Sharp; Terry Foster; Rob Parker; Heismanpundit. Unless you've got something that cries out to be slaughtered I'll probably bite my tongue and pass.

I would say that this "cries out to be slaughtered" and is "really egregious." However, in general, avoid going to the "Drew-Sharp-wrote-something-outrageous-and-slanderous-to Michigan" well too often. Drew Sharp's shtick is to annoy and outrage Michigan fans in order to get clicks and reads.

I don't think Brian uses this language, but Sharp (and most things in the Freep and Bleacher Report) are to be shunned. They are cast out into the utter, outer darkness from the glorious fellowship of all things Michigan. They are generally not to be cited, quoted, referenced, pointed out on this blog, at one's great peril. They are to be shunned, and for all intents and purposes, have ceased to exist. Let the poster beware.

I actually partially agree with you . . . this case just makes Sharp look utterly ridiculous, and is something he wouldn't want highlighted. Plus it has nothing to do with Michigan. This definitely falls under the category of egregious, and is worth posting.

You are right, this time. I was just telling you to be careful out there. Speaking of being careful, some people have a pretty thin skin around here, and will negbang some mgousers on sight. Now that you've ventured into the realm of contributing to the blog, remember that there will always be some people who don't like you. C'est la vie. Don't worry about the negbangs. At 150 points, it matters, but really, as long as you stay north of 100 points, and don't get sent to Bolivia, points are pointless. Oh, and remember the first rule of points:  never talk about points (or to be more precise, never kvetch about points).

On second thought, what is also disturbing is that the freep is quietly do nothing. At least with the Mitch Albom issue, he did issue an apology. So far nothing from that sanctimonious prick drew sharp or from that two-bit rag the freep.

Given the Freep's past transgressions regarding sports reporting, maybe they've realized there's no reputation left to defend, so why bother with such inanities as owning up to and apologizing for egregious lapses in honesty, correctness, and professionalism?

in a continuing production of industrial-grade journalistic buffoonery by Sharp. Irritating as hell, but nothing ethically dubious. This story isn't about Sharp's constant trolling of Michigan; it's about the fact that he's a serial plagiarist of the most brazen sort.

Sharp is certainly still a buffoon, but this incident confirms beyond any doubt that the Detroit Free Press has completely abandoned any pretense to professional integrity and ethics in journalism. This should be a big deal—if I were running the Detroit News, I'd make it a front-page story and I'd hammer the Freep on a daily basis until they publicly acknowledged Sharp's plagiarism, issued an apology, and took appropriate disciplinary action.*

One thing is clear: the Freep must have paid enough hush money to Harms that his kids' college tuition is all paid for.

* I forgot about their JOA—I wonder if this functionally inhibits either paper from publicly going after the other.

I knew that the News and the Freep were in bed together in some way. I don't know what the JOA entails and means, but somehow, I don't see the News doing that (going after Sharp and the Freep). And in general, it seems that reporters rarely go after their own, unless they come from a completely opposite political point of view. Since they mostly share the same political POV, that very rarely happens.

Maybe this isn't the case now, but for much of their history the News was notably more conservative than the Freep.

I don't see this particular issue as one involving political ideology, though—basic professionalism in journalism shouldn't be ideological.

Clearly Journalism has to evolve because the Internet and electronics have drastically changed how folks get their news.  Just like w/ music and movies, content providers, whatever their primary media, have to figure out a new business model.  Its not like aggregators will have anythign to provide if the content producers they leach off of go out of business.  Unless you mean Reddit is the ideal?

Drew Sharp and Mitch Albom are both POS. The Freep lacks any and all journalistic integrity. Id read Huffington before Id read the Freep.

Albom should write up what Cleeves thinks about Sharp's antics. They could reminisce about that time they sat together and watched MSU play in the tournament while their at it.

Merry Christmas everyone.

The investigation of Albom and the Freep sports department in 2005 revealed that many did not like Mitch and it was felt he consistently received preferential treatment. Thus he was called out for his actions and treated firmly. Sharps actions are even more egregious and we should keep beating the drum until he receives the discipline he deserves. It is clear that the Freep sports department is an "anything goes" operation with their interim editor at the helm. I do not buy or look at the Freep on line since the stretchgate debacle. Good work on this. You are doing what Bob Woodward instructed Deep Throat to do over 40 years ago- FOLLOW THE MONEY!

Hopefully this somehow leads to the ultimate end of Drew. He's been a decent piece of shit for as long as I can remember. I've never felt like he offered anything worth reading and haven't bothered with his articles for as long as I can remember.Good first post.

for a first post. You clearly stated what the subject was so that I didn't have to click on a link to something that I swore off years ago. So thank you for that. Also, try not to use LOL in every comment.

Obviously has some incriminating pictures or info on an executive at that joke of a news outlet.

He'll be on his merry way recycling his own trite and shitty content or stealing others' actual journalism in no time.

Fortunately he will remain a small time local troll; unfortunately, small time local trolls don't get the public shaming that national figures do for plagiarism and fabrication.
