My experiences at michigans football camp

Submitted by jackat7 on
As many of you know today was michigans First day of football camp. I am a senior in high school and I am going for the offensive lineman portion of the camp. Ive always been a huge michigan fan and always follow the blog. There was a lot of talent and a huge group of kids there from all over. Hoke didn't say much today but was always around but d coordinator mattison had a lot to say. He seemed very confident of his teachings and of his staffs knowledge on the game. He made it very clear that we had the best coaching staff in the nation (he also pointed out that we will have the best special teams in the nation). Overall he had a very good speech and expressed his love for the game. Then we went off to do position group drills and that's when we I got to meet the o line coach. He was very cool and pretty serious about football. Afterwards I got to talk to him for awhile and he was a good guy he put his arm around me and talked to me for a bit. I could see him being able to bond with his players very well. Later the strength and conditioning coach talked for a little bit he seemed angry at everybody. He wanted everyone with perfect posture and listening to him. He seemed like he could whip us into shape. I couldn't spot on Manu recruits but I saw recently offered o lineman Elmer and he was big. Really big. There was some past players there or helping out. There is still the rest of the week left I'll let you guys know if anything else cool happens.

Thanks for keeping all of us informed on the real camp experience.  Good luck, have fun and soak everything in.  Seems like a life long memory and amazing experience.

I attended the Michigan camp (waaaaaay back when) and remember the expierience like it happened yesterday.  Bust your ass, son.  Compete as hard as you can.  Take everything in and even keep a journal of your experience....you'll thank me in about 25 years.

My highest hope is that Hoke is a world-class leader/motivator who delegates the X's and O's on both sides of the ball to the right people.  This sounds like exactly what he is doing so far on defense.  Time will tell if the offense is in the right hands.  At any rate, at least they are payiing Mattison enough to keep him this time.

I was there as well, and the OLine group this year is huge. There are plenty of the perceived 'road graders' that the new staff wants to bring back. Elmer from Midland was there and he is gigantic, but the scariest thing about that is he still looks to have the frame to grow much, much more.

Ben Braden was there and he seemed even bigger than Elmer. The cliche may be overused, but his legs are the size of tree trunks. He also moved better than the vast majority of linemen, which is especially impressive considering his size.

Coach Funk is definitely a good one. He preached eye contact and chemistry. He wants the campers to help each other out along the way and to support each other. He said the 5 men on the OLine need to act as 1, and that chemistry is vital.

Another theme echoed by Mattison, Funk, and all of the other coaches was respect. Respect for yourself, for the other campers, for the camp staff, and for the camp itself.

They also had the camp do what the players do at meetings. Years? 132. Championships? 42. Beat! Ohio!

Hey thanks to both of you for sharing your experiences I hope you keep doing it. I don't know much about the Michigan camp like how many people attend, what exact kind of drills you do, who is there, what is said from coaches, etc.

If you want to write more about it I'm sure we'll all be interested to read as detailed as you want to get. Thanks guys!

I have to agree with the suggestion of keeping a journal.  Of course it will be so much easier today as 25 years ago that poor SOB was taking notes like Larua Ingelles from Little House on The Prarie.

I go back into my journal every so often and look over the pictures my Dad took from the games I played in High School and college-after your Dad is gone this journal will keep you close to him.

Thank you for posting the update.
