Murphy and Grimes Update (again)

Submitted by TomVH on

Clarence Murphy has committed to Maryland, according to Tony Grimes.

Grimes just told me that Michigan is still in the mix for him, as well as Ole Miss, and Maryland.

He said the cold will play a factor, but it's going to be cold anywhere(?). He's just going to play it day by day.

So, in my opinion, this probably means bad news for Michigan. His tone and the way he was talking wasn't very positive. With Murphy choosing Maryland, everyone is kind of seeing the writing on the wall. I'm not sure what happened to change Grimes mind, but it seems like it is changing.

He's playing everything close to the vest right now, so he's not telling a lot. Like I said, I don't think it's good news, though.

It seems if he wanted to come to Michigan bad enough he would have been here by now. No Ill will towards the kid however, wish him good luck in where ever he chooses.

With this, Gardner and MRob not Enrolling early, Tony Drake and Adrian Witty probably not ever coming, and Johnathon Hankins, 2010 sucks for recruiting atm.

Grimes would have been good, but we've got quite a few DBs, McKnight still on the board, and Greg for next year. I think we're just fine on DBs.

I agree. I also expect that Richrod and company aren't surprised by some of the changes in DB recruiting. A month ago, our DB recruiting looked like the following.

6 CBs
Christian
Avery
Talbott
Witty
Grimes
Brown (2011)
We also had anywhere form 3-4 more offers out on 2011 CBs

2-4 Safeties
Johnson
Vinopal
Parker ??
Knight ??
We also have 3-4 offers on 2011 safeties.

While I know we all had to live through the lack of DBs last year, I was thinking that it seemed like we were a bit in DB overkill with more needs in the trenches and LB. However, our early recruiting of 2011 DBs perhaps should have been a bit of a tell that there were doubts in the coaches minds or that they have lived through many recruiting cycles and things change in the minds of high schoolers.

What does this all mean? 1) I like to write long posts. 2)There is always a silver lining. We still should be in pretty good shape in 2010 with DB recruits. Christian plays as nickel and the other two redshirt. Hopefully picking up Parker and or Knight gives us a solid 6-7 DBs in this class(not counting the possibility of a WR switching positions), which is good. Also, I think that too many recruits for one position in a class can hamper recruiting in future classes (See 2008 OL recruiting impact on 2010 OL recruiting IMHO)and that shouldn't be the case here.

I've made one. I read the blog for over a year and then joined recently. Sadly it was at the same time as that guy who would start 4 posts a day about recruiting, which would seem to be why you decided to jump to conclusions based on you reading one post. If you were smarter, you would have realized the difference in posting styles seeing that em0 and and his alter egos always asked the same questions regarding recruiting without actually offering much in terms of opinions, or mildly well-thought out arguments.
Once again, thank you for you kindness and graciousness it is really appreciated among the supposed same fanbase.

(I hope your mastery of the obvious allows you to pick up on any traces of sarcasm in this post.)

Seriously, I was just thinking the same thing with regards to Grimes and the weather being a legitimate issue.

If weather is actually a driving force behind this and he is using the current cold weather as a reason, since this news is basically coming out of nowhere in the last 2 days, then that is absolutely the dumbest rationale eva.

Not only is our country experiencing below norm temperatures but the entire northern hemisphere is! I wonder if the young African futbol phenoms are currently having second thoughts about signing with the Manchester United's, Chelsea's and Liverpool's and are choosing to go to Barcelona and Madrid instead. aw, hamburgers.

Realistically...it would be really nice to "replace" grimes and murphy with Jibreel Black and Rashad Knight. Hopefully the snake oil is in abundance in the last 3 weeks of recruiting!

That sound you just heard was the board shifting from "OMG WE HAVE TOO MANY COMMITS" mode to "OMG WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH COMMITS" mode.

Adjust panic accordingly.

He just played at the O/D game where it was a gametime temp in the 30's in Myrtle Beach. Florida has been unseasonably cold (int he 40s in Miami). Just talked to a colleague in the panhandle and not expected to get out of the 30s for another few days.

Its cold down there and he is experiencing a few weeks of cold for the first time in his memory most likely. Pretty sobering.

I know it shocks my system every year and I grew up in Minnesota and live in Chicago.

This probably isn't a great year to sell a Florida kid on the weather in Michigan (or Ohio). It's always odd to me to see someone choose a school based on regional temperature. How about quality of school, history of football program, and chance to win championships? Didn't Friedgen just lead them to a 2-10 season? Best of luck guys...

Has anyone sat down with this lad and discussed the value of a UofM degree? And the great professional opportunities that he may be foregoing by not attending one of the world's finest universities?

Wait a minute, retract that statement. The old man is still giving me grief for majoring in history, and wasting four years in A2.

Good news is my student loans are more than half paid off.

Isn't it strange how before we were talking about choosing between Hankins, Grimes, Murphy, Wilson, Thorton, etc, and so many of them are off the board/close to?

This is just whack.

Well I wish him luck wherever he goes. If it truly is because he does not like cold weather then I guess it is better for him to discover that now instead of after he signs because then we woudl have yet another transfer on our hands. Speaking of cold, does anyone have a cold compress so I may treat another dong punch injury?

I wager 10 mgopoints Mathis commits to Michigan tomorrow. We should be less sad once that occurs.

So hold off on the wang bang until then...

There's approximately an 8.779% chance of this occurring, but I like to live dangerously.

On a related note, how awesome would it be if we could wager mgopoints?

I'll wager 10 MGoPoints that he doesn't commit to M.

And if we could wager points I would probably be well into the negatives.
