MSU vs WMU last night

Submitted by UMProud on

So Sparty beat the Broncos (as expected) by 13 points last night...but they definitely did not dominate our MAC neighbor.  Connor Cook was very inefficient and they just looked sorta bad coming out of the gate.

I'm sort of scratching my head wondering if this is a one off or something else.  We'll know next week when Sparty hosts Oregon in East Landfill I suppose?

in this game as I felt this match-up set-up perfectly for a solid and talented WMU team as they were catching the Spartans the week before the Oregon game, a rare home game versus a power five team, etc.

With that said I felt I was very lucky to cash my +18.5 ticket on the Broncos in this one as MSU manhandled WMU at the line of scrimmage much more than I expected they would. WMU had a big kick return for a touchdown early on and were down 34-10 early in 2nd half before scoring the final 17 points. Got the feeling that MSU did exactly what they wanted to do in this one.

Each week I do a play by play breakdown of each box score from every game involving all FBS teams. The idea is to try and come up with a more accurate final score for each game and in this game my post-game numbers show Michigan State winning by 20 points (also FYI.......Michigan should have lost by 3 points to Utah by my post-game numbers). Anyways I disagree that MSU struggled in this game and felt they actually played better than I thought they would.

They are good, but are slowly getting worse from the rose bowl team. Sparty hit on 3-4 years straight in recruiting and it's showing. Not by the recruiting sites but getting 2 stars like darqueze denard and a bunch more that played like studs but weren't highly ranked out of HS. Now they are entering a totally different ballgame, now the answer is how long can they be good for? Cook will be going to the NFL after this year IMO and that's when we'll see. They've had good qbs the past 5-6 years, minus the one year maxwell experiment, in cousins and cook. But if they “miss" on a few qbs we are right back in the rivalry without doing a thing Go Blue!

at least in the past 20 years or so.

I want MSU to fall apart also one day but WOW I'm shocked by what people are saying here. This Spartans team has seriously 2 and probably 3 players who should all go in the 1st round of next year's draft.

This MSU team has better lines by far than 2013.  There are NFL 1st rounders on both sides of the ball.  MSU suffered a season ending injury to its best linebacker a couple of weeks ago, so that position group is scrabbling right now.  It's back end has stars in the making--Montae Nicholson is a 6'2" sophmore safety with speed and is touch as nails, and Vayante Copeland is a rs freshman corner. I will eat this post if both aren't All-America by their senior seasons (if they haven't gone pro by then).

With that said, the 2013 defense was easily the best MSU defense since the mid-60s when five of the top 7 NFL draft picks were from MSU.  There is no shame in not being as good as the 2013 team.

Western's offense is pretty good. Terrell is a great non-power 5 QB, and have 2 great receivers; 1 of which is ranked the 8th in the WR's for the draft.

State is going to need the offense to win them games. Luckily for them, the B1G doesn't have teams that just sling the ball deep all game like Western.

If we are going to beat them, it'll have to be with our D

Is not very good. If any QB can get time to exploit them, it's there for the taking. They were average in the secondary last year and lost their 2 best players back there. WMU dropped an easy TD and was in the red zone at the end, this was no fluke it's a continuing pattern of competent offenses attacking a weakness.

I was rowing the boat with my family at the game last night. Wife is an alum and brother in law played there in late 90s. State was better team. Cook was very inconsistent at times. Western missed opportunities but never quit. Western shockingly owned most of second half. I mean they had a 92 yard td drive. The proof will be next week. At first glance the secondary and lbs will get shredded by Oregon.
