MSU vs Boise St Second Half Open Thread
Given that the MSU line is complete garbage.
This would have been a far better game last year - frankly both teams were better.
Boise will get one more chance, I just know it.
HUGE PLAY...a stop and a punt keeps you in the game...Boise has shown that they can go deep on State
Chris Perry called, he wants his insane number of carries back
Didnt Anthony Thomas have like ~50 carries one year against Minnesota? Also Biakabutuka had some games like that if I recall.
boise thats the same fucking play from 3rd down last series
Wow...you leave SImms open...
well if anything this might have scared Sparty.. the game was good for 3 qrts
Luckily I picked MSU to win.
Why is Boise running deep coverage? Every time they've just dumped it off to a TE or a RB in the flats
All I know is I better not hear any trash talking by Sparty about this crap game.
Eh, let 'em talk. This was hardly a convincing win. They have a great back, but their D wasn't nearly as dominant as I expected. Boise State's offense isn't good, and they appear to be giving up as we speak.
look forward to reading, Matt Charboneau from the News. I am sure that we will hear what a gritty and epic win this was.
ugly sparty slut - put your fucking shirt back on.
your inner ohio with that comment eh?
Dantonio is going to play Ohio football this year, with 2 trick plays a game that Tressel wouldnt need to do.
If not for Bell, Michigan State might be in the running for worst offense in the history of the Big Ten.
Somewhere Kevin Wilson strongly disagrees.
You havent watched much Indiana football. ;)
MSU fans think maxwell looks poised and dantonio did epic 2nd half adjustments
That's it... It's over.
Well I can say with our great D coachs I think they can figure out how to stop 1 player.
So Bell has been involved in 46 plays tonight. That seems totally repeatable for the entire season. No way he'll start coughing up balls or injure himself.
Who was the MSU dude in the sports bra? Didn't know guys were wearing those now.
The kids all say that moobs are in
It's a MANZIER!
Chris Perry had 50 against MSU one year.
2003, came over and took a bow in front of the msu student section. I was there, it was tremendous
MSU win = better MSU ranking when we play them, plus a small residual bonus for the B1G. Plus it's pretty clear what M will have to do to beat them.
BSU win - Schadenfreude.
It's a no-lose.
Or a no win if you take the opposite of each situation. A Sparty win or a Big Ten loss each sound pretty bad.
Just glad it's football season!
Wow. Blatant hold by Simms.
Why doesn't BSU just run their own trick play called "Little Saints" where all 11 guys just attack Bell and break his legs?
WOOOO! AUGUST HEISMAN!!!!
Is that similar to the September version that Tate won?
but it might be too soon.
Oh, its WAAAAAY better. No one has ever won it so soon.
Until Bell does it against Notre Dame we cant give him the Forcier Heisman ;)
Your avatar makes everything you say magic!
To soon.... Or not to soon? That is the question.
When you slide on 3rd down a yard before the 1st own marker. The Football Gods don't respect that.
chris peterson is gonna have to talk to his defense about effort.. i know they are tired but damn they are not out of the game yet. get a stop and they have a chance
Bell has ran so much the offensive line is tired. That doesn't happen at Michigan.
Valentini: "I admit it! I was wrong! Boise State was a far better team than I anticipated. Big win. Biiiig wiiiin."
Hey Boise, cover the god damn tight end.
If nothing else this helps ease my mind when they come to The Big House this year.. Mattison should have no problem with a gameplan this year.
The MSU offense will take time to gel. They may be a completely different team by the time they head to the Big House. This win and a few more games will give Maxwell confidence and time to mature a bit.
I was especially encouraged by MSU's D, however. While their corners are really good (although BSU's WRs certainly helped make them look that way) Gholston wasn't a factor except in the negative sense.
Start strong, play like crap in the middle, and do just enough in the end to hold on for a victory.
Well I think Boise's little run is over - they'll lose a couple more times this year. And Sparty is going to be a good team that loses 3-5 games.
Or they've hit an actual rebuilding year. Y'know the sort of thing that happens to every program. Although, if the play calling doesn't improve I will admit there's room for concern.
Man, this is like watching MSU play OSU last year - just a horrible game that MSU somehow manages to squeak out.
And yet still, somehow a narrow win at home over a team ranked 11 spots lower will be spun into an epic victory.
The good news - MSU's offense is piss-poor. The bad news - so is BSU's offense. I really wish we were scheduled to play MSU next week. Maxwell is a huge liability at this point.
Dantonio will go for the score to cover the utter offensive chaos
you know they will score to make it look like they beat them by double digits
Not often the most important play of the game was a timeout called after the ball was snapped.
I was playing halo was a friend and had the game on my laptop, looked down during the game and saw what I thought was Boise converting the 4th and 2 on an option pitch, then when my game ended I saw them going for 4th and 2 again and not getting it. Who called the timeout?
MSU did not show a great D this game.
Congrats to MSU for winning a game in which they started Nick Sheridan's sister Nicollette at QB
So about Arnett what happened to him? I thought he was going to MSU because of the greatness of Maxwell.
Dantonio just killed everyone who went with Spartan and the points....
Seriously. I'm mainly glad that Gholston was abjectly terrible all night. Never once got legitimate pressure on the QB. Not sure if he was even in on a tackle.
Which was A LOT of people, from what I was hearing.
Couches will be burned.
Michigan State is gonna get raped in the B1G.
Well there's one upside....20 hours till we play Bama!!!!!
do they go on to find a nice little niche in the big east, or fall back to obscurity?
They lost 10 of 11 starters on defense, their starting QB and NFL running back. They'll be back - hell of a coaching job tonight...personally I thought the line was a joke and MSU at home would kill them by 14+. You shouldnt take a team on the road without any defense back and a first time QB starter and be within a whisker of a "top 10" team. The Big East is not a good conference for football so they will do fine. In a conference with bigger players they'd get worn down. In one game (a bowl) they can play tricks and finesse out wins. Undersized at almost every position versus power conferences.
I think they'll be back, but I wouldn't say their defensive staff did a "hell of a job." Practically every pass play for MSU in the second half was a little 5-yard out/wheel route, and somehow this proved too much for the BSU defensive braintrust to figure out.
BSU will continue to overachieve their talent level as long as they have Coach Pete (he loves Boise), but will continue to be under-manned because they still won't be able to draw talent even close to second-tier teams like MSU.
Like I said before, BSU had all of one 4* player on their entire team during the four years of Kellen Moore's 50-3 record. By contrast, in 2010 alone, MSU signed four 4* and one 5* players. With that being said, BSU has made a name for themselves nationally, and if they can return to being a ranked team by the end of the year, they might be able to continue to slowly build the program.
So Sparty pluses were LBs and DBs and Bell is as advertised.
Minuses are Maxwell looks terrified, their receivers are horrible, their oline was unimpressive, and their dline couldn't generate any pressure.
I disagree about their d-line. Boise couldn't run the ball at all. Spartans look one dimensional on offense with Bell and Sims as their only passing threat. I expect Maxwell to improve but the real test will come for him against Notre Dame. ND has the talent and coaching on defense to take away Bell and make that team one dimensional. Sparty's defense will help them contend for the Legends Division.
D-line is average. The DE's, both Gholston and Rush, were invisible tonight.
Their LBs are good, but bite very hard on runs. Their DBs are very good, but vulnerable to big plays. You have to throw deep (which Boise did on 3 consecutive plays late in the game, with almost devestating effect), and scheme a way to punish those LBs for coming so hard. Seems like there's an offensive gameplan that wouldn't be too hard to figure out.
Sims also played well at tight end after being lost at sea for a few years. He was MAxwell's main outlet. So focus on Sims and Bell, and let Maxwell and the WR's beat you. O-line looked fine on running plays ;) but yes as a pass protection, not so much. Will know better versus N.D.
News! Rod Gilmore says the Sparty offense isn't ready, "yet", for the Rose Bowl.
Not impressed with either team. One-dimensional strategy all around.
We are going to real these mother fuckers. THEY BLOW
So Bell is officially Burkhead. He's gonna have to carry that O unless Maxwell just had a bad game. Hard to really tell anything from that game; we really don't know how good Boise is at all. MSU's D, especially the run D looked real good.
Actually, I think we can conclude that Boise's DL is really, really crappy and that they can't tackle at all.
Or MSU's O line is awesome and Bell will win the Heisman. I think yours is more plausible at this point, but you never know.
Not impressed at all by MSU. The Run D is solid but DJ Harper is no fits Toussaint and there O-Line is sub par.
Maxwell has to improve as the season goes by so they'll be better as the season goes by, but the Boise QB improved from one half to the other. Notre Dame will be far more telling, if he hasnt made a sizeable jump by then it's going to be a long season for that offense.
Gholston top 5 pick next year. Book it.
to the Raiders
they made the superbowl in 2003 against the Bucs. A thuggish city deserves a criminal
yep, just like that 49'ers fan that got mugged in the parking lot when the raiders played the 49'ers. Oakland is a wannabe detroit.
Have you checked to make sure your tin-foil hat is on?
Lol, they're gonna need a QB first...
Vernon Gholston got cut today...
That other Gholston, he's solid, but not a top 5 pick.
as his cousin, Vernon. Tight hips which doesn't allow him to bend at the edge and finish. I'm still seeing the same problem tonight.
He isn't at his best when team runs towards him as opposed to away from him.
He didnt even record a single tackle in the whole game. Actually he didnt even assist on a single tackle the whole game. His hype is laughablly unwarranted.
Here we go, MSU has a september heisman. I can't wait to kill them in ann arbor. the only rose bowl they are getting is a smoker from bongz and thongz.
Oh well. Go Sportons.
Bell just lied about what he really said to Maxwell at halftime, I imagine that conversation was something like this "STOP THROWING THE FUCKING BALL AND JUST HAND IT OFF TO ME!!!!"
50 touches for Bell tonight (44 carries and six receptions). Clearly, they've got killer depth there.
Had to watch most of the game on mute...the announcers kill me. They were all over State's nuts.
State is a solid team. They will be fine. Boise is exactly what everyone thought. Overrated. Boise lost their entire offense and it showed.
Unless MSU can improve its passing game, teams will load up the box on Bell.
WHY THE HELL DIDN'T BOISE PUT 8 IN THE BOX ON EVERY PLAY!
Correction - BSU lost their entire offense and their entire defense. They had six returning starters and two of those were kickers. BSU also had some key players suspended.
Michigan State was suppose to win and they did. Great, and as a Michigan and Big 10 fan, this is want we wanted! It looks good for our conference and makes our eventual win over Michigan State looks better.
But as a team, Michigan State looks very beatable. I am more confident now, then before the game, that we can beat Michigan State come game time. Bell looked great, which is what I expected. But often he had to made something from nothing. Their OLine looked average and their receivers looked poor. The only other standout on offense was Sims, but I believe you can easily gameplan for a big TE with limited speed. Maxwell, who was suppose to take over where Cousins left off, left a lot to be desired. He struggled with pressure and his completetions were mainly to open receivers on very short routes.
Defense wise, Michigan State looked very good, but also still beatable. They were aggressive, but they also need to be aggressive to bring pressure. They run and pass blitz a lot, which is why Boise States trick plays gained big yardage. Borges need to realize this and scheme for it. But when State only tried to bring the 4 down lineman, they often struggled to get pressure on a very so-so Boise State OLine. The only other comment on State's D is that their CBs are big and aggressive, but Boise State was easily able to beat them deep when they tried to press. They had many potential TDs turned into PI calls because the ball was badly underthrown and the CB was playing catchup the to WR without ever locating the ball in the air.
With that said, Michigan should now be favorites to win the Legends division.
A side benefit is that our friends in EL should be a bit more subdued in their boasting for at least a week or two.
depends who ur MSU friends are.. my facebook is blowing up with Bell as heisman and how MSU is incredible for beating a poor Boise team
Honestly, last 5 year's I'd say Boise was the better program. Bigger wins, more wins, higher rankings, more guys in the NFL, probably a better recruiting class, but tonight Sparty had a defensive tackle taking handoffs.
I'm not too surprised by this game. I've argued since last season that MSU was likely to be in the 7-5/8-4 range. I don't think they have the offensive firepower to do much better. Cousins masked a lot of weaknesses last year.
At the very least, this does give some credibility to the B1G. 98% of football fans probably have no clue that this Boise State team is different than any other so MSU's win does look like a big win just from seeing a 30 second sportscenter clip.
Unfortunately for them, unless Maxwell improves the D and Leveon Bell probably won't be able to drag MSU to Pasadena
Boise's O line looked good, that's a great defense whose front 7 ran through our O line last year. Offensivle, Maxwell is OK, but they miss clutch WRs big time. They look beatable.
1st time a Boise State team has been held to no offensive TDs since 1997.
Maxwell has potential. He has a big arm and did what was asked of him in the 2nd half. We'll get a better idea of what he can do against ND. Their big problem on O right now is their receivers.
Hard to say how good their D is. Boise's offense looked TERRIBLE. Not a lot of talent at any position.
Maxwell may have the physical tools but he seemed to get happy feet whenever he was pressured. MSU adjusted in the second half by having him throw a lot of safe, quick passes, but in the future he's going to have to show the ability to stand tall in the pocket on longer-developing plays.
The guy needed to change his undies at the half. He looks absolutely terrified out there. He could of easily had six int's.
Sparty looked pretty terrible tonight, IMO, for a team that EVERYONE is picking to win the Big10. All week on ESPN and BTN, the talking heads are all over Sparty's jock, yet they looked like a team with a great RB against a pretty weak BSU team. I was impressed with their defense for two series in the first half, and then it definitely looked beatable by a balanced offense. IMO, Sparty was lucky as there were several deep passes that were mere inches from changing the game -- especially the one where the BSU QB slipped when he threw the pass.
Bell is a stud, no doubt about it. But, without a viable downfield threat -- other than Sims -- I don't see MSU as a "Rose Bowl" team. Maxwell looked lost to me, and made some pretty horrible throws, several of which should have been INT's that weren't. If he doesn't learn to deal with pressure in his face, it's going to be a long season for Sparty.
Because running the ball and defense has never gotten anyone anywhere.
Nice to see you fellas celebrating your victory over MSU already, don't wear yourselves out. Big game tomorrow night.
Shouldn't you be writing a letter to our athletic department stating how disappointed you are that Hoke is playing Fitz this weekend?
I really wouldn't have cared if Hoke started them. 1st offense, plead down. Not like it would have helped anyways.
I am more concerned about the safety of your players.
You're a fucking tool
I am not celebrating anything phork.
Yes, running ball well and playing good defense has gotten lots of teams a long way. But, when you play a team like BSU, whose defense is pretty pathetic, and you cram the ball down their throat, that doesn't mean that you're going to be able to do that against the tougher teams on the schedule. I really couldn't believe that BSU's DC didn't just load the box every down. When he did, Bell got stuffed. As someone else said, his YPC wasn't all that great.
Nice to see you have decided that Boise is already a really good team. You know nothing about MSU at this point.
I never said that Boise is really good. While you guys are burying and euligizing MSU they racked up almost 500 yards of offense and held Boise to 200. Get rid of the turnovers and this game is a blow out.
BIG championship course is now through East Lansing, or through Ann Arbor by way of East Lansing.
Good luck tonight fellas!
The 500 yards was against a team that returned two full time defensive starters, cockmuppet.
Did you not see the fact that the oline was Swiss cheese to a shitty Boise dline? Or that msu receivers looked awful? Or that Maxwell looked atrocious in the face of any pressure?
If you assume Boise is a good team this year then you guys looked awesome. But Boise should suck. They lost just about everyone this year. If bell doesn't break like 600 shitty excuses for tackles you guys aren't even in the game
I understand Bell had a lot of yards, but he didn't even average 5 yards per rush. And one of his carries should have gone for negative 2 yards if Boise could tackle but he got 35 yards instead. Yes, Bell had a good game. But any player who rushes the ball 44 times should have at least 200 yards. I'm more impressed how much State had to rely on him than I am with his performance. They are going to be in a lot of trouble if they are forced to do that again this year
He had 210 yards rushing and 55 more in the air...
Bell played great. He's the "real deal." But, if you cannot see that your offense is one dimensional, and that is a severe liability, then you're delusional. Oh wait, you're Sparty, my bad, delusional is your state of being.
Phork's actually a Domer, but he's an all-purpose troll. He can't troll about ND's performance on the field, so he desperately tried to attack Hoke's integrity in player discipline. With that, too, gone, he's got nothing left but to live vicariously through Sparty. That, my friend, is a cry for help.
Please, tell me more about Bell. I didn't know from the box score how many yards he had receiving....I can't read those darn things. So the "55" under the yards category for Michigan State receiving tells me how many receiving yards he had? How crazy is that?!?!
Shouldn't you be getting ready to watch Navy beat Notre Dame?
They looked extremely beatable
The msu offense looked bad against a team that returned 2 defensive starters. My guess is the 2 starters were 2-3* kids. So, yeah, I'm not impressed with the sparty offense.
They didn't have a player north of 3 stars on the field. Mostly 2's and 3's. If you go off of the rivals ratings, they're actually not that far off from CMU's. Who happen to have a competent quarterback and running game, and inexplicably get the spartans at home next week. This could be an opportunity to make some money.
I think you're serioulsy undervaluing Chris Petersen coaching ability. In 6 seasons that man has amassed an outrageous 73-6 record with the same 2-3* player you're talking about.
Doug Martin was a 2-star recruit in high school, and now he's the starting RB for Tampa Bay. The Lions have both Kellen Moore and Titus Young, both of whom were 3 stars that Petersen coached into the NFL.
Three good years in the last twenty.
Let's write a coffee table book about it.
Sparty had superior personnel, as many here thought they would, but their terrible play at QB and questionable playcalling kept the game close. I hope Maxwell is this bad against Michigan, when he faces a team that might be able to put some real pressure on him.
