Dantonio is the product of a perfect storm... The poor fit RR was in AA and the total bag of dicks Mr. Fupa was. He'll get his in due time and I can't wait.
MSU Slappy in DetNews and Recruiting Rankings
that Dantonios record of "wins" that he prefers doesn't include a single Bowl win. Dantonio is 0-4 in Bowl Games, but sparty always manges to show up twice a year (even though we all really saw them lose last year to ND.)
Dantonio has beaten exactly one ranked (AP, at game time) team on the road (UMich, last year).
His only other wins over ranked teams were UMich in '09 and Wisconsin last year. Both of those were at home.
Overall he's 3-10 against ranked teams. Sparty On!
those are key stats and extremely telling. Michigan's resurgence is making alot of Spartys in W. Michigan a little nervous. Their chest thumping doesn't have quite the same sound anymore. I like it when your hated adversaries show their core, which in MSU's case is small and soppy.
I didn't know Rich Rodriquez coached our team... RODRIQUEZ.
Also, "Weiss" did not coach ND, it's Weis. I'd say it is a safe bet that this guy really did go to MSU. Impressive proofreading, huh ?
I love how every Spartan seems to forget they were a sub .500 team in '09. "MSU gets the wins"...seriously. One great season doesn't make you a powerhouse. All this is just justification for why they should be cleaning up in recruiting, but aren't.
After the "slappy" beginning. But I wonder why all this stuff mattered when MSU was "taking over the State and killing us in recruiting in our backyard", but now it's all recruiting voodoo.
Or the in-state recruiting dominance will only happen this year because we are promising every player a starting position as a freshman. But when we have a horrible year, everyone will decommit.
I actually read one poster believes the FHH kids will switch to MSU if they beat us.
Sparty is so delusional.
That I'd expect it from. This guy is supposed to be a "journalist", not a slappy. (When you have to start your article denying it, you're a slappy).
"MSU is getting destroyed in recruiting..but..but...its a CONSPIRACY! MSU gets no respect! Michigan always outrecruited MSU so this means nothing"
except Michigan recruited a lot worse under Rich Rod, and Dantonio has had one good year.
this idiot author, but even under RR UM still ranked higher in recruiting rankings every year. Doesn't change the fact that this article is horse crap though, and a clear spin job to try and deflect how UM is crushing Sparty in recruiting.
Shouldn't Sparty go back to doing what Sparty does?
And shouldn't we go back to not caring?
Michigan is killing the recruiting; I'm happy about that.
I wouldn't have pegged her as a salad eater . . .
of the dumbest articles I have ever read. One good year does not make Dantanio a god among coaches, particurly when you consider that Sparty posted a 6-7 record the year before last year. The idiot can't even spell Rodriguez correctly, that alone destroys any shred of credibility.
The bottom line is that Michigan is destroying MSU in recruiting so far and Dantonio and the Spartans will soon get there's on the field as well. Newsflash Sparty slappes your program is not an elite program, that is why your class is made up of lower ranked guys and you are contunually ranked lower than Michigan each year.
I can't wait until we get back to the point where no self-respecting journalist compares Michigan and MSU in recruiting. I give it two years.
Your time is coming.
Has anyone mentioned lately that in order for you to have any future relevance, you have to beat Michigan, Nebraska and Iowa - every year? To be noteworthy outside of EL, you have to do that and climb over Penn State, Wisconsin or tsiO?
What really burns my ass is that now Hoke is destroying them instate, all of a sudden they're a natioanl recruiting team, they don't need to recruit the state of Michigan. Seems they say this is all possible because of their first B10 Title in over 10 years.
Recruiting rankings don't mean jack squat when you're the one getting embarrassed on the recruiting trail. HOWEVA, you could bet your sweet ass those rankings would be met with great fanfare from Sparty if the shoe was on the other foot.
They hang their hat on the last 3 years like they will forever own the rivalry for as long as football is played now. Way to cherry pick a time frame Matt. What is MSU's record against Michigan say the past 10 years? What about 15 or 20? I am not going to pretend that the last 3 games didn't count because they were during the "RODRIQUEZ" era, but I don't remember MSU having regular success when the head coaching position was filled by someone within the family so to speak, so lets wait and see how Dantonio does against Hoke before we start handing over the rivalry.
They sure like to rub our faces in that "1/2 National Title" but they sure are doing a lot of chest thumping over that 33.3 % of 1 B1G title that they have earned in the last 20 years. Unreal.
I just can't wait for them to lose to the Buckeye "B squad" in week 5. And ND in week 4. We really, really have to beat them this year. I can't take hearing about how "awesome" Dantonio an their NFL superstar team are anymore.
Michigan has 42 Big Ten Championships, MSU 6 1/3. I think the recruiting matters just a little bit.
They have 7. I'd be damned if we didn't share a good number of our titles as well.
Michigan- 16 sole championships (1898, 1902, 1925, 1947, 1948, 1950, 1964, 1971, 1980, 1982, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1997, 2003).
MSU- 3 sole championships (1965, 1966, 1987).
Even if you were to discount every championship before they were in the conference (which, why would you?) they lose 11 to 3. To look at it another way:
- OSU (18)
- M (16)
- Wisconsin (7)
- Minnesota (7)
- Illinois (6)
- Chicago (5)
- Iowa (4)
- MSU (3)
- NU (2)
- IU (1)
- Purdue (1)
- PSU (1)
Howeva....since I began using that stat a couple weeks ago, none of my Sparty friends have been clever enough to so retort. Let them do their own work.
Do you happen to know the numbers of how many offensive and defensive players RichRod recruited? I bet you don't.
salad lady. Is it safe to assume this is an EL drive-through? Talk about targeted marketing.
because the spelling mistakes have been repaired already.
Did anyone save it before the revision??
On the other hand........who cares?.......god I am bored tonight
Despite getting out-recruited, Mark Dantonio kicks ass........against coaches who suck. HOWEVA....what's his record against teams that out-recruit him whose coach isn't named Rodriquez or Weis?
He's a stellar 5 - 11. That's right. The team that "gets the wins" fails to.... well, you know.....get wins.
vs. Iowa (an established coaching staff, I think we can all agree) - 1-3
vs PSU (I hear their coach has been around a while) - 2-2
vs Wisc (another coach who has made a home for himself) - 2 - 2
vs. BC, Georgia, Texas Tech, Bama.....all teams that recruit better or at least on par with MD - 0 - 4.
I really hate how they keep saying "we'll win like we always do". They had one good season, and didn't even have a tough schedule. 67-31-5 all I can say.
sometimes recruiting doesnt matter but it sure seems to this rivalry. MSU fans canned response is "they always recruit better. we'll just beat them on the field like usual" as if beating us 3 years in a row erases the last 50 years of football history. plus those were arguably the 3 worst michigan teams of the last 50 years as well
in due time, order will be restored
Michigan St always have lower recruitng classes because they recruit more in Michigan and get the leftovers from Ohio. Michigan and Notre Dame have national brands
Oh, that's right, Sparty does recruit nationally, which would explain why they have ZERO outside of Michigan and Ohio!
Can't wait until Oct.15!
I still can't believe how much hype Dantonio is getting for one good season.
Does anyone remember that this guy was 18-17 in three seasons at Cincinnati? Cincy's record the three years before he took over: 19-19. So, I'm not sure exactly what he did there. Cincy's record the three years after he left? 33-6. I suppose one could argue that he left the cupboard stocked for Kelly, but still, he didn't do much from a W-L standpoint while he was there and the team took over after he left.
So, he goes to State. And up until last year, he was all of five games over .500 at 22-17. A definite improvement over the 14-21 record over the last three years of the John L. Smith era, but still nothing to write home about.
Then, they catch lightning in a bottle. 11-2 is 11-2, but even a Spartan slappy would have to agree that it was against a really easy schedule. They played two teams that ended up in the Top 25. They beat Wisconsin at home and got their asses handed to them by Alabama. They barely beat Purdue, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Penn State and also lost big to a mediocre Iowa team.
So, my point is that this writer is saying that Dantonio is a big winner, when he's won nine or more games just two times out of the six seasons that he's been a head coach. In fact, take away last season and his record over five seasons is a rather ordinary 40-34. He's assuming that Dantonio is going to continue to rack by winning seasons, when judging by his track record, last year was an abberation and he's nothing more than a .500 coach.
Sparty fans are all excited about MSU going national. What they don't want to admit is, MSU has no choice. Their normal avenues for talent have been taken over and cut off. Good luck trying to open up that pipeline to Texas and California. This is just a feeling... but I don't think they going to pry that 4 star from Utah or Baylor.
It hasn't even been a full year for Hoke, and he has already reclaimed the state. All the work that Dontonio has done since he has been here, has been rendered moot. That fact alone should scare Spartan fans.
Now we gotta pry into his main.
If the guy wants to discredit recruiting rankings that's fine but I think it's worth noticing that ZERO of MSU's commits had offers from either Michigan or Notre Dame. TEN of Michigan's commits had offers from MSU. Only one of Notre Dame's commits had an offer from MSU so there aren't a whole lot of head-to-head recruiting battles there.
State isn't getting the recruits they're targetting right now and they're straight up losing the recruiting battles against Michigan and I don't know how anybody could argue that.
I guess I can't really blame sparty for all the talking they have been doing over the past 3 years.
I mean for most of them, this is the best run of success they have seen from MSU in their lifetimes.
However, what drives me nuts is the way they talk as if they KNOW they are going to continue beating us for the rest of time.
I mean they do realize that before '08 we beat them six(!) times in a row right? So they would have to win the next 3 games just to get to even in the past 12 years.
They have definitely taken it to us the past three years, and I don't deny that. But they have to know that eventually its going to swing back to (at the very least) even.
And when it does swing back, Michigan fans are going to be relentless, mostly because of all the shit we have heard the past 3 seasons.
MSU showed their true talent level against Alabama last year. They had a decent year in 2008. They had a year more indicative of their talent level in 2009. Last year, they got every break a team could want. Then, they faced a team so much better than them that it would have taken a season's worth of the kind of breaks they got just to beat Alabama.
MSU will get respect when they earn it. They need to sustain excellece for more than "one year in a row." And they need to do it with players who don't have criminal records. If the idiot who wrote the column is even employed as a writer five years from now, we'll see how great his Spartans are.
Yeah, last year they won two(!) games on fake FGs, when it should have been obvious that a fake was at least possible. If ND and NW had been awake on special teams, MSU could very easily have been 9-4 rather than 11-2. The fact is that 11-2 was an anomaly, and they lost about 5 starters on both sides of the ball, including their best LB and much of their O-line. They should be decent this year (assuming that Cousins stays healthy), but I don't see them maintaining anything close to last year going forward.
It's a long term deal. Their fan base has never been able to understand that. They have one good year and it's over a barrel. They should be really concerned about the recruiting. I don't know how long it's been since they have been bludgeoned this bad in state. This is not the year it should be happening. The reality has never changed though. Kids prefer Michigan. MSU by and large is a fall back position if Michigan falls through, or a place for feeder high schools to send theirs.
They need to realize that a couple years won't change that. Basketball school mentality applied to a totally different sport.
If you omit the fact that MSU has not shown up when it mattered for the most part, and that Dantonio is winless in bowls......yeah, OK, I can almost live with this. Are we surprised by MSU's non-presence in the rankings? No. Does it means something? Perhaps, yes, even if it is 2012. You can certainly see how popular East Lansing is.
I stopped reading the article (after a bout 5 seconds) once I got to his line: " ...recruiting rankings mean little when it comes to results on the field." This is abviously another guy who doesn't trust (i.e. understand) the data on the correlation between recruiting rankings and on the field results.
And the Sparties were all repeating the Det News slappy's points. I stayed away but some else took the bait. Logic is not Sparty's strong suit.
I really Hoke we beat these clowns THIS year and shut them up. Then another 6 year run would be nice.
