MSU Penalty on the snap?

Submitted by gustave ferbert on

http://longsnap.com/2010/08/28/nfl-and-ncaa-rules-regarding-snappers/ Could this have been legitimately called? The rules seem to have been implemented in 2010 and I haven't seen anything that was updated. It's the first I've ever heard of such a rule and I've never seen it called in a game.

Looking at the replay, it did look as if Sypnieski (spelling?) was bowled over on the snap.

I've seen you comment in a similar vein elsewhere, and I agree with you... to a point.  Good teams don't need calls (or luck, or crazy blocked punts) to go their way to win.  In fact, I think that is a pretty good definition of a good team: one that wins despite calls and freak plays. BUT, I also believes a good team plays by the rules... not the rules as written so much, but the rules as enforced.  From this perspective I think it is important and reasonable to scrutinize calls in a game that could have been or were relevant.  For me it's not an "oh, well, we had that game stolen because they illegally ran over the long-snapper", but rather, I'd like an honest and open reply from the NCAA... they've got this rule on the books, do they intend to enforce it or not?  I think it would probably be good for our ST coaches and players to know.  We like to think that the Harbaugh staff is on top of all the details... so let's get the details.  If it isn't an enforced rule, then we'll play accordingly.  If it is supposed to be enforced... well... then... well, it was only one play in a 60 minute game, but it sure was a hell of a play to miss a call on...

We don't "think that the Harbaugh staff is on top of all the details;" we KNOW the Harbaugh staff is "on top of all the details."

He also knows that there is nothing to be gained right now by saying anything more about it in public.  I am guessing that a lot of tape is going to the league office with pertinent and relevant questions.

QUIT ACTING LIKE A BUNCH OF PUSSIES. YOU LOST TO A BETTER TEAM. MSU HAD 150 MORE OFFENSIVE YARDS AND 10 MORE FIRST DOWNS. YOU LOST CAUSE MSU IS BETTER AT FOOTBALL THAN UM. HAS BEEN FOR 8 YEARS. WE ALL EXPECTED THIS. UM IS A LOSER. .......ALSO, FYI, OHIO STATE JUST WON IT'S 20th IN A ROW, AND URBAN MEYER IS NOW 45-3. SUCK ON THAT FOR A WHILE.

was tripped in the end zone without a pass interference penalty. The score stays the same.

Officiating will never be perfect. Players and coaches make mistakes too. All the time.

Time to move on. There's a lot of football yet to be played this season. No one seems unbeatable in our division. Let's see how things play out.

Note: This restriction does not apply if a team does not present an apparent punt, field goal, or Kick Try formation, or if, after the offensive team has assumed a set position, there is a shift, or a player goes in motion.

They did set a couple players in motion

I'm saying that the game is over, and has been over for more than 24 hours. Whether it was a penalty or not makes not one bit of difference now.

If you want to get philosophical then I would say that If a ref doesn't call it then it is not a penalty. Is it bullshit that they missed it? I would say yes, but it doesn't change the fact that the team lost.

:edit: just noticed you didn't reply to me.

Your caveat only applies in the NFL: the complete NCAA rule is
" II. NCAA Rule 9-1-2-o

When a team is in scrimmage kick formation, a defensive player may not initiate contact with the snapper until one second has elapsed after the snap (A.R. 9-1-2-XVIII-XX)."

No mention of motion.

If the teams had been reversed with Michigan recovering a fumbled punt to win the game, I have complete confidence that Michigan would have been called for a penalty.

jumped early, the flag is there this stupid scrum is going to be done over right? No flag? About another 20 seconds elapsed and I turned it off. We lose our top tackler for being pushed on top of a guy, Sparty cheats in their very Dantonio way and it's just good to go? game over. Whatever.

I loathe this mentality. They don't want to decide the game, thereby deciding the game.

Same with the egregious hold on the play that made us unable to tackle. If it was a kick return, that's a penalty call every time. But since it's a crazy final play, the ref stands there dumbfounded.

Unless there is a new rule introduced that allows a game to be restarted more than 24 hours after it has ended in order to review a possible infraction then this shit is pointless.

I DVR the Utah game & watched tonight. Of course they showed that play at half time. So I watched as I was curious after reading on here. Yes - they mowed the snapper right over, ass over tea kettle, as soon as he snapped it

Calls simply aren't made unless they are major. So unless Sypniewski's head fell off they weren't going to call anything. Refs are encouraged to swallow the whistle late to avoid messing up the game. Some refs follow that, some don't. The crew yesterday did.

An apology from B1G would be nice. Won't happen and doesn't change the loss. It just helps with arguments with sparty, which is idiotic anyway. I think it does help our punter, whether he needs that help or not.

of the longsnapper being mugged along with the skycam video showing the snap coming to Blake. That gives rational people a way to process what happened. Blake didn't have a chance. It's hard to tell if he even ever had posession. There were 9 other guys on that play (not including the longsnapper). This without even discussing MSU's fullback touchdown, that game was a team loss.
