For those interested, at 4:30 on BTN Michigan State travels to Crisler to play Michigan in a Women's Basketball game. Michigan is 11-4 (2-0) on the season with Big Ten wins at Ohio State and at home against Wisconsin. Michigan State is 10-5 (2-0) on the season with wins at Minnesota and home against a good Nebraska team.
MSU at Michigan Women's Basketball Open Thread
Would be HUGE if Michigan can get this win.
Michigan has really been promoting this game and rightfully so. Only meeting of the season and Michigan beat them here last year.
I just saw the state's top junior player just picked MSU over Michigan. A guard from Benton Harbor with a last name I won't even attempt to spell. That sucks because her sister is the top ranked Sophomore in the state.
Michigan's coach has had no luck recruiting in Michigan. Maybe she isn't even bothering recruiting Michigan. All her signees are from out of state.
The Michigan staff went hard—early—after Kalabrya Gondrezick, the 2015 player you're referring to. While she was deciding, Michigan got commitments from a slew of highly ranked guards. Gondrezick has said that one of the reasons she picked MSU is that they didn't have any point guards in their 2014 and 2015 classes. She had a chance to commit to Michigan before they got all those guard commitments, but she wasn't ready to made a decision. You can't blame the Michgian staff for taking commitments from highly ranked players from out of state instead of waiting to see if an in-stater might commit.
For the insight; maybe they have a chance with her sister. They say they aren't a package deal.
I wouldn't get your hopes up with her sister, Kysre. She may not pick MSU (although the odds are pretty good she will), but I have a hard time seeing her picking Michigan, the arch-rival of the school her sister will attend. The two of them are extremely close. If she doesn't pick MSU, Notre Dame would seem to have the best chance.
By the way, the Michigan coaches have offers out to other in-state players, so they are definitely working the state.
definitely hit Benton Harbor hard. I'm from the area and those girls can flat out ball. Guys too (See: Wilson Chandler).
Joique Bell, RB for the Lions, is from BH too!
Feel bad watching Madison Williams for Sparty playing and running down court. 3 fricking ACL surgeries in 3 yrs for her and it looks like she is in pain everytime she takes a step on the court.
Wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Purdue just beat Penn State, which had been 2-0 in the Big Ten. So the winner of the Michigan-MSU game will be alone in first place at 3-0.
Great job storming back.
Get the W!!!
we are currently down 5, come on ladies!!
Rebuilding year at 11-5 is pretty good for this program. Especially with a road win at ohio so far.
Tough loss but I was there and it was a fun game to watch. The biggest problem (other than losing) was that the Crisler Center was packed with Sparties. I liked how they curtained off the upper sections to give the place a more intimate feel rather than the cavernous look it would have without the curtains.
I think Coach Barnes Arico is putting something good together and if she is able to get something going I could see her getting some support. It would help if she had more support now because it is hard to recuit when the fan base is not there.
