MSU has not yet played a winning football team

Submitted by Brhino on

MSU's opponents:

Western Michigan (2-3)

Oregon (3-3)

Air Force (2-2) - currently playing Wyoming, up 7-3 at halftime

Central Michigan (2-4)

Purdue (1-5)

Rutgers (2-3)

When you need Air Force to pull off a win so you have a quality opponent on your schedule....

when your "signature win" was against a team that's now 3-3 on the year with one of those wins being a FCS team...

When you've only managed to hold one of your first six opponents to under 21 points...

When you have a top 10 ranking because "they were good last year" and not much else...

How are you feeling, Sparty?  You think your undefeated record and your lofty ranking will help you? Ask BYU.  Ask Northwestern.  Just don't ask them where the end zone is, they can't help you there.

Meh. We're out to win our division. With our schedule remaining, and based on how we've played, we shouldn't lose more than 1 game the rest of the season. That might be good enough to get into the championship game.

Talking about what they've done or not done, doesn't matter one bit. They've owned Michigan for too many years. Time to right the universe. And talking about what they've done so far this year means nothing. Just win next week. Then talk. EDIT: no offense meant to OP..it's actually a great point...I just think none of it matters when it comes to our game with them next week...and I just want to win before saying how questionable their team is...no chicken counting from me. I am so friggin superstitious!

MSU is not a great team. They are ok. Probably good enough to beat us if we play a bad game. But if we start fast again, it's over. I believe that program peaked in 2013.

All good points. I would point out however that this is the 5th straight week our defense has faced an inexperienced quarterback. I expect Cook and MSU's offense will be able to move the ball on us and put up 14-20. I just hope we can score more than they do.

I'm done for now. They've owned our ass for the last 7 years. So once/if we win Saturday, I will refrain from my hateful comments.

This game is the season for MSU. Harbaugh, unlike RR & Hoke, will be totally prepared. I still firmly believe that Michigan has been holding some things in reserve. I can easily believe the gloves will come off.

As I said elsewhere, I'm delighted MSU has won all their games. It means their delusion is greater.

I hate to say it, but when I think of Michigan State's record this year, I'm reminded of how Michigan has started so strong so many seasons, only to collapse halfway through. Why is it I have no fear of that? Perhaps because I believe the tables have been turned. Michigan will take it to MSU, and MSU will be revealed as a fraud.

I think he will be. From a pure passing standpoint anyway. They don't have a good run game and Rutgers for the most part stuffed them on the ground. He had to pass for over 350 just to sneak by them. If UM can slow their passing just a little, I feel good.

Cook made some clutch throws today when they were down, so that's a concern.  That said, I'm not all that worried because their pass protection was terrible today.  A lot of blitzes worked today, and even with 1:1 coverage the MSU receivers got zero separation from one of the worst secondaries in the country.  They did make some great contested catches, but better secondaries will be all over those balls (and may get out in front for picks).  I can definitely see a panic pick or two next week, along with sacks.

before we go ripping MSU's schedule, you might want to check on where Oregon State, UNLV, BYU Maryland and NW are going to end up.  Utah's the only team we've played that I feel is actually good.

BYU struggled to beat ECU at HOME last night and still have 4 pretty difficult games remaining, this was supposed to be an easy one.  its not out of the question they end up 6-6.

Oregon State might not win a Pac12 game, leaving them 1 win over and FCS team.

UNLV is UNLV

Maryland is going to finish last in the Big East with zero wins

Northwestern, I'm not sold that offense is going to get them more that 3 or 4 more wins.  But I'll concede thats a pretty good team.  But they'll benefit greatly being in the Big Ten West, their at best the 4th best team in East.

Next week is a big challenge for Michigan, even if I think we may kill them.

They were within a TD in the 4th quarter at Florida and they lost at Navy, who just gave ND a good game today.

Either way, we've looked more consistent in our wins than Sparty has.  If Sparty would finish their games and stop trying to blow 21 point leads, people wouldn't think they suck now.  Our record is where I thought it would be heading into this game and so is MSU's record.  But I am surprised at how each team got here.

But you sound like you don't watch college football. If you did you would know that NW has already notched two very good wins against Stanford and Duke. BYU is a quality football team with a win over Boise State who happens to be ranked. In fact, BYU's only losses are to top 20 teams. Hell, maybe check a strength of schedule metric and be enlightened.

This.

Northwestern represents Stanford's only loss and Duke's only loss.  Duke won yesterday 44-3 on the road against a team that outgained Penn State the previous week.

As for BYU, Boise has looked completely unstoppable in every other game they've played except for against BYU.  And winning at Nebraska is a better win than it looks like when you consider they've lost all four games on the final snap.  The Huskers could as easily be 6-0 as 2-4.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're secretly a top ten team or something.  But that was a good win.

ECU played Florida tough in Gainesville and has already beaten Va Tech and SMU. They are not some cupcake. Oregon State still has WSU and Colorado left on their schedule and Oregon looks beatable for them after today. Maryland is Maryland. NW is still a top 25 I think but they still have to play Iowa, PSU and @Wisconsin. It matters what you want to call pretty good, Utah is the only top 15 team on our schedule unless Ohio State turns it around (which they probably will) but I still think MSU, BYU and NW still have it in them to finish in the Top 25. That about as best as you can get with PSU down and Maryland, Rutgers and Indiana in our Division.

I know sparty gets up for this game every single year. This upcoming game is the single most important game on their schedule during the season regardless of how good or bad we're doing. For the past 7 years, we've treated it like "just another game" while they've treated it like a life or death situation. It's partially because of this that they've played with a chip on their shoulder. Because of that, they've dominated this series as of late.

But a team is a reflection of their coach and his staff. Dantonio has had a chip on his shoulder and his team reflects that. They've played angry. They've played hungry. They've played for respect. And they've earned it. When Hoke was our coach, it was well known that Hoke was a "likable" guy. "Likable" is cool but likable doesn't translate to wins. Our team has been soft for the past several years, a reflection of our coach at the time.

Now? The Wolverines play with a chip on their shoulder. They play with an edge. They play angry. They have a meticulous and methodical coach who breathes, eats and sleeps football. They have a coach who lives to compete. Everything is a competition with Harbaugh and our team has become a reflection of that. Oh....and having an NFL coaching staff doesn't hurt either. Believe you, me, this will NOT be "just another game" to The Wolverines next weekend. They know what's on the line. They know what's at stake and they know what they're capable of.

To be perfectly honest, Michigan State has shown me absolutely NOTHING this season that makes me believe even in the slightest that they're poised to come into The Big House after 2 years and walk out of it still undefeated. They've struggled to beat every single team they've faced this season, even the bottom feeders. You thought a statement was made yesterday against Northwestern? Just wait until Saturday, Oct. 17th. This new Michigan Wolverines team, team 135 is going to enter and leave this game with an "enthusiasm unknown to mankind" and when the smoke clears, team 135 will be The Victors! The confidence they'll gain from next week's win will set them up for a success that very few thought they'd see this season. It will set them up for the kind of success that the whole nation thought it would take Harbaugh a few years to build. GO BLUE!!

...But Cook and MSU's receivers looked pretty good last night against Rutgers.

Therefore, Michigan-MSU should turn on whether Michigan's d-line can get consistent pressure to hurry Cook's throws.

Given the state Michigan's D (and MSU's banged up o-line), Michigan should be favored.

Let's face it, Dantonio's hatred for Michigan is deep and pure. It's entirely possible that MSU has looked past the last couple of opponents because they're now arrogant and think they can half-ass their way through the season. But they will give their best effort vs us. They will play like their lives depend on it.

If this was the first poll of the year after six games, are they higher than 14/15? Undefeated, but my sense is that the line would be "no good wins, lots of close calls."

With the ACTUAL game only 6 days away, there is little reason to be schedule-comparing to make a case for which team is better.  We'll all know on Saturday!  That's all that matters.
