MSU gives Tom Anastos a contract extension to 2019-20

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

This somehow slipped through the cracks recently. I found this out this morning......oh my........

LOL

Are they trying to lose every year and continue their nosedive to hell?

http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/sports/college/msu/football/20…

We all thought it was hilarious back when they said they were gonna keep him.......but a contract extension into the 20s is essentially suicide. If they fire him, they're gonna have to pay a buyout. If they wait until it expires for him to leave, they will be near China they'll be in such a deep hole by then.

That was given since I heard the words "successful season" thrown around on BTN to describe MSU qualifying for the conference tournament as the 10 seed and finishing with a 27-28 record.

Most of their wins were from their ABYSMAL non-conference schedule. They played the most pathetic excuse of a schedule ever and still only managed to win 8 conference games.

Always amuses me how much love Hollis gets despite inheriting both Dantonio and Izzo. Yes, he probably played a role considering he was with the department for the last two decades, but it always makes me laugh about how much he's lauded, despite having made no major hires since taking over. He's done a fine job, but think he gets a bit too much praise for his role.

Great.  Wonderful.  I know there's lamentation over State turning into a hockey shitshow, but I don't share that lovely sentiment.  Let them burn their own house down.  A Michigan-Michigan State game between two really good teams is fun, but this isn't like the Ohio State game where it actually adds to Michigan's (apologies) brand.  Viva Anastos.

it's only fun if we can schedule teams to take their place, perhaps create a new rivalry, but the closest we've gotten in 1 game a year vs boston

i was watching a game vs Staee last year and about halfway thru my reaction was "god, we should not be playing a team this bad up to 6x per year." The rivalry is dead, with only faint memories of the mason-berenson showdowns, and unlike the football counterpart, no sign of it returning

MSU Football and Hoops can burn in hell.  However.....I attended many of the games back when Mason was in charge there and never enjoyed hockey more.  A competitive rivalry between us in hockey when there a league title is at stake, is as fun as it gets. So, seeing an MSU "hockey shitshow" does nothing for me.  That being said, Mark Hollis is a buffoon who's appeal has always been a mystery to me.

What isn't clear are if the terms of the agreement changed.  He is getting an extension through the 2019-2020 season.  That is only 4 seasons.  This is likely that this is just optics so that he can tell recruits that he will be there for their four years.

If I was the AD and I wasn't happy with the trajectory of the team, but i didn't want to fire the coach now, I would extend him for the four of five years to support recruiting, but in exchange, the buyout would be eliminated or become more favorable to the school.  This provides the optics for recruiting and improves the school's ability to make a change.

that's so he can tell recruits he'll be there when they arrive on campus.

There's no way you could extend him in return for eliminating the school's buyout. No agent would ever agree to that. Along those lines, I do think it's plausible to extend him with little or no buyout for that additional year.

this is why you shouldn't be AD any more than hollis. You gotta be willing to go in a new direction, and the clear signs of that for their hockey has been there for YEARS already

frankly it tells me they don't give a shit about hockey or non football/basketball sports, because believe me this level of ineptitude would not be tolerated in those sports. They may as well just cut hockey if that's the case

He wasn't being a homer, and he didnt say MSU didnt have a good bball team. But in many ways it has looked like that since they have become a football program they have been okay with not being as strong in other sports.

Just saying it's tough to be non-homer on this board for some.

They've been strong enough in football and basketball. Those are the big two, whether we like it or not. And I think the majority of us would be okay with the golf team and hockey team being bad if our basketball team was at that elite level.

No, we want to be great in everything. As evidenced by building facilities for every sport and spending money on them.

We aren't a C- athletic department that only cares about two sports.

Hockey actually has its own fanbase here.

i'm glad you bring that up because the reason we have that record is the opponent that day. Let's not forget either the game at spartan stadium. This used to be a top notch rivalry, and it's got no hope of recovering so long as anastos is there

Frankly i found it unseemly even when he was hired. He jumped from commissioner of the CCHA to one of the teams that helped kill it!

Because I'm not a complete, 100 percent troll?

If football and basketball were the two main elite sports, and the rest were average, I'm pretty confident the general Michigan fan would be fine. I know I would. I watch the hockey and softball team with some minor interest, but they don't get the blood flowing like pigskin and hoop. And I'm sure most MSU fans are fine with the hockey team being garbo because they've been damn good in main two.

Thanks homer. Enjoy your homer lifestyle.

Went to neither MSU or Michigan, been a Michigan fan all my life. So it's easier for me to be objective and see things from the outside without my maize and blue goggles on like yourself. I think maybe 4 percent of Michigan fans would shed a tear if the other sports sucked and the main two were consistently elite. I know you can try and be all the all-Michigan sports guy, it's a good front.

drzoidburg

that might be true of field hockey, but you left out a ton of sports that draw thousands - volleyball, wrestling, swimming/water polo, hockey, soccer, softball, baseball, gymnastics - and this is a stupid equation you've come up with since in no way does a good football team come at the expense of those sports

uncle leo

Compared to hundreds of thousands.

If you did away with every other major sport, and football/basketball were the only two left in college athletics, maybe 3 percent of fans would shed a tear. And if I had to pick between basketball/football being elite and the others being crap vs the fringe sports being good and the main two being crap, I'll go with the former.

I'd be fine being bad at golf to be elite in basketball. Hockey I want to be good at though.

I care most about football, then basketball a close 2nd and hocket a close 3rd. I would care care about hockey equally to basketball if it got as much national exposure and recognition which it does not.

The other sports like golf, softball volleyball, etc.., I do not care at all about and have no interest in them.

Its all about Michigan football, basketball and hockey for me as a Michigan Wolverine fan.

Of Michigan fans. I know people can try and carry the banner for golf, tennis, baseball, but they will never have 1/900th of the traction of football or basketball.

And I agree with you. Basketball and Football are 1 and 1a for me. The rest are a nice distraction while we wait for the others.

This will shock people, but MSU has won an NC in hockey more recently than the following teams:

  • UM
  • Minnesota
  • Wisconsin
  • Denver

And just beat out BU.  It's insane to me that they are this terrible in less than a decade, and they want to keep the band together.

Bando Calrissian

June 23rd, 2016 at 11:47 AM ^

Well... That NC was pretty much every star aligning exactly perfectly. Thanks to some committee shenanigans, MSU got put in the Midwest regional, beat a weak ND 1-seed, then won a FF with three 3-seeds and a 2-seed. The whole thing was everything that is wrong about the NCAA hockey tournament. Sure, they won a championship, but in just abou tthe weakest way possible.

This is totally insane. Seriously, a deliberate attempt to scuttle the hockey program is a legit possibility at this point. B1G hockey is experiencing an historic down period for several of its programs and MSU STILL cannot win games. This is embarrassing for everybody. Everything I wrote here still stands: http://mgoblog.com/diaries/intervention-time-michigan-state-hockey-doub…

Tom Anastos is unquestionably terrible and just got another 4 seasons. I think the shocking news of a few months ago was that he wouldn't be fired...to find out the actually extended him to 2019-2020 is truly astounding. Hollis really doesn't care
