MSU gets commitment from 5-star Swanigan

Submitted by lukepanici on
5 star center Caleb Swanigan has committed to the Spartans. This gives Izzo two McDonald's AA big men in one class. It'll be interesting to see how he and Davis can perform together.

interesting that just last week izzo publicly announced he needs more talent and now swanigan shocks all recruitniks and picks msu. does msu=m$u? probably not, but seems fishy.

Don't be an idiot. izzo has recruited Swanigan for years. The Cuonzo Martin stuff blew up recently that had all the recruitniks re thinking that Swanigan was going to Cal. And there's always the Kentucky factor. But Izzo has been on this kid for awhile.

Then some reporters caught wind of the California package deal thing and went with it and everyone followed claiming they had "insider" information.

This wasn't a surprise to anyone who actually followed his recruitment. Davis has been steering Swanigan toward MSU ever since they started playing together a couple years ago.

reference .   We will still beat Sparty next year with all their "superior" talent.  Beilein has done it before and Beilein will do it again.  Look how many 4 and 5 stars were on their roster in 2011 and our zero stars of Zack and Stu went out out and beat them twice that year.

In order to be a good team you have to have good point guard play.  MSU is overlooking not having 4 year point guard Travis Trice next year.  They may have all these big guys, but no one will be able to get them the ball.  I think they will be good, but all of Izzo's good teams have had outstanding point guard play, and I don't know who they will have to fill that void next year.

He's a pass first point gaurd and started at the one the second half of the season because Trice wasn't a true point guard.

Kid can't shoot a lick, but he breaks a defense down good and finds the open guy. If he doesn't develop a shot I'm not sure that will matter because teams played like 10 feet off of him all year just daring him to shoot.

their weak link. He can't shoot or finish at the rim. He only played 19 minutes in their Duke loss. If he doesn't develope some offense, they will be limited. Plus, most guards can shoot over him. Izzo will be looking for point guard help. Like Winston.

I really like our chances if guys can stay healthy. Bigs: Doyle, Donnal, Wilson are 6-9 Forwards: Chatman, Robinson, Moritz are 6-8 Guards: Levert is 6-7, Irvin, Rahkman, Dawkins are 6-6 Point guards: Walton is 6-0, Spike is 5-11. Efficient offense system in place. Team needs to keep improving strength, rebounding and defense. Lots of work ethic, ball IQ and experience.

Rahkman, Levert, Irvin, Doyle and one more from Chatman, Wilson, Robinson, Dawkins. I think Chatman will surprise because I saw late last season some signs of the game slowing down for him.

Holy crap, Swanigan has a 7-4" wingspan. WTF? He's basically a slights less polished Jared Sullinger at this stage, not going to be fun to play against. Please let us get Brown or one of the transfers we are hearing about.

great for the rivalry, will make it much better beating them. it's a classic Izzo bigs and ugly basketball vs. Beilein's shooters and beautiful sets. it'll be great

Impressive haul by Sparty, I wish we had converted our title run into such recruiting success.

But I love our team next year, especially if Caris comes back. OSU just had a super class that was a lot of noise.

Unfortunantely, with Izzo's track record these guys are going to burry us their senior years.

Not by a long shot, but he's definitely in the tier immediately below the top elite names. You don't get to as many Final Fours as he has if you're not an outstanding coach, and if you think otherwise you're an idiot. That's as stupid an argument as saying Schembechler wasn't a great coach because he never won a NC or had a lousy bowl record.

It's great reading this board.   I didn't realize how crappy Izzo is, or how bad it is to get to 7 final fours.   Glad you guys straightened me out with that stuff.  I just hope Izzo has some type of success before he leaves MSU.  Sick of his mediocre stuff.

Remember, we're not a rival of yours.

So in other words, you're admitting that you're (there's that word again) the kind of juvenile, semi-literate spankweasel who thinks that recognizing an opposing coach's abilities and record makes you his "fan."

the point. Most here just don't like him, or his whining, or his adolescent swipes at Michigan, or his phoney humility, or his slumber party searches for chemistry, etc. I mean come on man, the guy is beyond irritating. Green is his color though, it's definitely his color.

Yeah, if you liked him, we probably wouldn't be winning. You guys loved Bobby Williams. I get that. We loved J. Ira and Nick Harris Family Head Coach Brady Hoke, RR, your two decades of basketball coaches. It was beyond entertaining. I don't think many at UofM like our Italian coaches. You can say it's because of what they say but its most likely because of scoreboard. Again, thanks for the entertainment today. Enjoyed the reading.

How do you want Izzo to twist it?  It sounds like you might be one of those guys who hangs on every word he says and then jumps up and down in anger and says "See, see!! right there he said that but this is so".

I guess I don't much care what he says, as long as he makes final fours and the NCAA tournament and gets to 7 of the last 8 sweet 16's, and does it the right way.   I know you can remember how much fun the NCAA tournament is when your team made those two incredible runs in 13 & 14.   Yeah, that's a blast, and Izzo gets us there so often we're all addicted to it.  Call me crazy, but no matter what he says or how he "twists" it, I'm thinking we have another pretty good chance at doing it again.

So, if he says something that upsets you, I"m truly sorry.  I like the angry little Italian elf.   He's great to watch during a game.   Funny as heck.

Izzo will find a way to keep Davis and Swanigan in town for 3-4 years just like Branden Dawson, Adreian Payne, Paul Davis, Kalin Lucas, Shannon Brown, and Maurice Ager.

Brianj25

April 11th, 2015 at 9:05 PM ^

D. Davis is about the same tier recruit as Dawson and Payne. (Ager and Lucas weren't even low five stars much less All Americans so they probably shouldn't be in this conversation.) And just like Dawson and Payne, the NBA won't come calling unless he develops a three point shot. He's a four year guy IMO and again like Dawson and Payne needs to improve in a ton of aspects before even being considered an NBA candidate.

Swanigan though is more of an elite recruit like Randolph, Richardson, P. Davis, Taylor, Brown, and Harris. Since he reclassified to 2015 instead of sticking in the class of 2016 he'll probably need at least two years but like all of those guys mentioned (except P. Davis) he'll probably end up leaving early even if it takes him three years.

Izzo won't develop him. Beilein does a far better job at developing players. They will have slightly better bigs, but I guarantee our wings and backcourt will be better than theirs even if LeVert leaves. Dawkins will make the sophomore leap and be an All Big Ten performer.
