Lets see some read option please.
MSU Game Open Thread
Rush 3. Zone D.
Not a good call when we can't get to the QB.
It wasn't bad but I don't think the corners were on the same page. It looked like one was playing zone and the other man
To flip field position badly.
Let's go, boys!
Put the ball out in space, pretty please with sugar on top.
all sorts of time to pass and Cook overthrows his receiver. That begs the question, is it better to rush 4, blitz, or to just send three?
The history of the offense in this game tells me we may see a safety right here
Now throw to Funch!
It seems we have no short passing game. Its either a run or a 3-5 second drop back trying to hit a 30 yard pass.
Devin is so tentative.
we'll see about that but I think it's going to be the team who throws best...eeks, we ain't throwing the best...
I think the defense is catching on to the constant play action and slow-developing routes.
In case anyone forgot, our offensive coordinator is not very smart
More awesome play calls.
Awesome quick pass to gallon? I sure hope so.
Play action needs to stop. It takes forever and Devin has no time to do anything.
The PA is delaying DG's reads.
Announcers are right; it's all about timing. You can do it, Gardner!
Announcer, hasn't been a third down conversion. Ummm yes there has dude, opening drive.
Better timing but not on the money.
DG just a bit off on the lead.
That's there all day.
we need to start running Devin, switching things up, 'cause what we're doing now ain't working...
Can't keep giving MSU the ball at the 50 and then continue to punt from our endzone
We cannot afford to keep letting them start drives on the 50.
They're turning the field position.
It's been turned. Our stout D and Cooks misses have been keeping them off the scoreboard so far...
Come on, D!
Matt Wile is good at kicking.
the kickoffs out of bounds. Should never happen
Other than a throw-back screen, has Michigan thrown the ball to a running back in the flat once this year?
Of course, they had a small one earlier in THIS game.
Damn... bad luck there
Argh, so close.
He had possession of that.
Langfords good for another.
Nice. We should have a little more room to work.
HOLY CAM GORDON
So close, indeed. Several good plays by our defense, though.
about the first quarter effort. Offense needs to figure out how to give 98 some time or they will spin their tires all day
98 also needs to start making his decisions faster to mitigate the OL's shortcomings.
Say what you want about the Spartans having the number one defense, they are pretty good and we can afford Devin to be half steppin' in the pocket. Decisiveness Devin!
Save a horse ride a spartan
Defense is playing really, really fast.
more pressure on Cook, he's bound to...dang he just hit a good pass...
Just how we all thought it was going to go, low scoring punt fest, I just hope that 3 points we gift wrapped for them doesn't bite us in the ass.
Pair their D with a decent offense and they're BCS title contenders. Pair their offense with only a decent defense and they're a 4-5 win team
Gents, my stream at work is a little blurry. How hard is it raining?
Was harder, barely raining now
Damn, bad luck there. Oh well, defense is playing great. Just had that one fluke play.
This has got the scent of another 12-10 kind of game all over it.
I give MSU credit on defense, but we are helping them out by holding on to the ball too long.
What other option is there?
So Michigan drives on the first drive, stalls, gets 3. Michigan state gets 3 on a derp play and hasn't done anything since? Slight advantage Michigan.
Emphasis on slight. Lots of ball to be played this game.
Would love to see someone have a big return.
Third down. Get off the field
Hey, Michigan gives up a first down on third and long. Haven't seen that before...
Could the announcers have jinx-willed that first down any harder?
I suspect that single play changes a lot
Man, every 1st down conversion is huge in this little field position game we're playing
Come on strip that ball.
If we aren't going to counter their constant pressure then we'd be better off punting on first down instead of constantly backing up.
I hate this announcer.
I do dislike this colour man.
We're doomed if he does
it's about the lack of rush. D is playing well, but we have to play GREAT to beat MSU's defense.
Can't give up third down conversions in this game.
and we're starting to pay for that now, Cook is getting into a rhythm...
In philosophy is obvious. We get no pressure at all
Gah. Gotta quit giving them the 10 yard gains.
They're completing all underneath passing routes... Nothing downfield
Wrap him up!!
Great Cook is gaining confidence and they're in FG range.
There is no foul on the play. Mark Dantonio would be angry so we picked up the flag.
Michigan tips their blitzes way too often.
Looked like that was going for yards but he swam off his block and stuck cook for no yards. Thats a solid +2 ime
Whew that was close.
sigh of relief.
Looks like the rain is coming back.
another 3 man rush and our guys can't keep their guys covered!?!?
Wow. Thank goodness their WR have butterfingers...
On replay it looked like Lewis was actually able to get to the ball, whether it was intentional or not. MSU receiver still should've high-balled it ime
Odd.... usually Lewis is in tight coverage but can't make plays... there he was beat but made the play. Go figure.
Second time they have lucked out with that. Mattison's playcalling has left something to be desired this year.
Agree - giving him all day is a mistake.
Echoing 9-6 2OT
Winner will be first team with possession in OT
but we need to find a way to move the ball or we're going to lose 12-3
Bullet dodged. We're having way too many close calls.
I hate MSU and their garbage dump stadium.
Didn't you have to have a lead to regain it?
To bring the blitz on third down or we will get killed
Ok Devin needsto pull his head out and start showing some fearlessness and determination.
When every pass call is a slow developing against one of the best defenses in the country, you can't really blame the QB.
My prediction of MSU 20-10 is looking very good right now.
because you can reach neither 20 nor 10 by increments of 3. 18-9 is more likely
3 points went there way after winning the field position battle. Need to move the ball here.
Regains the lead? Dude they haven't fucking had the lead yet to regain. This guy actually gets paid money to say that.
I'm freaking out, man.
He said MSU regains the lead, when they never had it to begin with.
That stupid fumble we didn't get in bounds was a momentum killer.
on those third downs was also a killer.
I know we have moved Funchess to WR but on those 3rd and long blitzes he should go over top of the line and give Devin a target just as would if he was at TE.
has to put together a good drive and get some points. 3 and out and this could get ugly
A three point lead seems pretty steep when you can't keep anyone off your QB.
We need to quit looking for the home run. We need to get the short passing game going. routes are taking too long to develop
Why do we only send pressure on 1st and 2nd down. This reminds me of watching Gerg on 3rd down.
How about this- we stop giving them great fucking field position. Make them start 30 yards back or so and things are diff
Wins this game.
The only thing I like about Nessler is that he's the only who called "Touchdown Manningham!" Otherwise, he's a tool.
The one, rather
My dad swears Devin only starts to really use his legs in the second half...
He's pretty confident.
He has shown a propensity for taking it out no matter what which often costs us 5-10 yards. We need those yards in this game
They do realize UM has a large edge in the overall series right.
Ugh Duckett Magic Clock TD. So. Much. Anger.
Hey look, running from shotgun worked. Go figure...
Trivia question might be answered at Mich and Minny but it's ASU and UofA.
What trophy is that again? Name of the rivalry? Can't remember
I'd be very, very surprised if you're right, as it would shake the foundation of my knowledge of trophy games.
Fitz seemed surprised to have running room there.
can't let the Sparties come after Devin all day; nice call Coach Borges!
Great call with the max protect formation. Run gardner for the first down.
Good calls Borges.
So may as well punt now.
What the hell kind of snap was that.
Holy fucking shit. Just shen they start to move the chains and then that!
Good god how can you miss a snap that badly?
-_- only Devin should be throwing the ball for Michigan, bro.
That was the worst snap I have ever seen. Killing the drive. SOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why does this happen to us
Haha. Just laugh.
Horrible horrible horrible.
Bad call Borges.
should be a late hit.
don't see that one too often...
Nice tackle by Lewan there
Gardner ran into Lewan
Wide open Funchess.
A lot of these sacks are on him or on Borges not calling enough quick passes. Way to get that drive killed
time to play D...oh wait no, let's run off the penalty and then play D...
Funchess waa naked.
Is just horrendous. And Lewan with a 15 yarded. Awful
Lewan. What a dirtbag move. Com'n man
And our senior leader loses his composure as usual
Frikin' crap yo I feel like benching somebody
Tyler Lewan. Looks like ABC pulled out all the stops with these announcers.
Way to f*cking murder that drive. 20 yard loss on a snap, a sack, and a 15 yard penalty. Exactly what we needed guys
if things don't go our way at the finish; so far the offense hasn't been up to the task of winning this game..
Funchess was again WIDE OPEN....why won't Gardner throw the ball?
Oh grow up, Lewan.
I dont even wanna watch anymore. This is horrible horrible
But relax dude
Lets not lose our heads.... Come on guys!
they were in man to man on at someone - thought he would have been able to get that ball out to someone.
And... opps, Lewan. Can't do that!
4th and 46... Jebus
back to the 50...
Goddamn that was costly. And Taylor wtf man.
Glasgow just killed that drive. How the hell do you miss that high?
This is a fucking nightmare.
I'm here for the meltdown.
The MSU coaches talked about Lewan's activity? Go screw yourself.
The smart thing for them to talk about would've been about Taylor's hot headedness. Get in his head and draw some penalties
Time to start drinking heavily
Hooboy. That's all I got. Hooboy.
4th and 48. My god.
Guys, I don't wanna be 'that guy' but it's just not in the cards...
If you think so you can kindly leave.
We are still in good shape.
D is playing well. Don't see MSU scoring too much. We've been able to move the ball in spurts.. and then gettting killed as well. Stringing a couple positive plays together is very possible.
Just when we had dug out of that field position nightmare
Lewan should be better than that at this point, but clearly he's not
Wow, 4th and 48. When was the last time that ever happened at any level of football?
And seriously Lewan, you're a senior and our damn captain. Keep your cool man.
Is a little btch. Taylor Lewan shouldn't have responded to that crap but Drummond's dancing around after instigating that crap was ridiculous.
Plus side, Lewan will see him some more today.
start rolling the pocket. Just get Devin a clean look away from all that BS going on in front of him.
Fuck. This. Shit.
could get ugly here if the D doesn't bail us out. Can't play from behind against that D
Well, self-inflicted wounds killing us, as usual. Keep playing solid, D, the offense is pooping their pants at the moment.
Sadly, the offense was moving it on that drive and we just murdered it
props to Coach Mattison and company, the defense is keeping us in the game...
Field. Position. We are giving them the game with free field goals.
Hoke/Borges/Funk in year 3 is flat out embarrassing.
This game is going almost exactly as I expected. Embarrassing.
On the bright side, we will eventually run out of bullets and stop shooting ourselves in the foot.
Report: Lewan asks sideline reporter during the game..."Can I go pro...right now?"
Reporter responded: "Clown question bro"
Lewan twisted a face mask at bottom of the pile after that play too
Self Destruct Mode Enabled.
Good thing Staee's offense sucks.
D keeping us in it.
well, i was just doing the liveblog, but no mods ever approve my posts
but in seriousness, its probably chaos trying to moderate that thing. 500 people typing in "OFFENSE DAMMIT" in unison
Neither team can do much offensively, but one team is trying as hard as possible to beat itself. Guess which one.
Grounding. Nice rush.
Pressure on third down. I like.
oh my bad, thought that was called a late hit
I'll take it
So its basically a 10-15 yard loss on a 3rd down play. Field position win
See boys, all ain't lost!
MSU won't score on us.
I expect our offense will be able to string a couple drives together.
Good no call on Ross... he was sort of tripped up and the momentum carried him
Like I said a while ago when everyone was trying to can the coaches. There comes a time as a player when you just have to make the plays. Can't blame the snap on the coaches, the penalty on the coaches, or the sack on the coaches. It's time for the players to realize they play for Michigan and play with some swag and some composure. Thankfully our defense has kept us in this game with a ton of tough field positions.
Sorry, but yes, you can put a lot of those things on coaching.
Not saying the answer is one-dimensional, but coaching should make these things not happen.
defense came to play. we just need 14 points and we'll win.
get across the 50 for starters. No dumb plays or penalties.
Short quick routes.
We're trying to unleash the dragon a lot which is fine, but it leaves DG on an island when no one gets open which is why he's been sacked a billion times already
let's go and put a good 6 minute TD drive
We can win this.
working nicely on D. I still can't believe how young our secondary is. Playing pretty stout up front too. Frank Clark is a beast when he wants to be. Come on offense.
Devin, right now is your time. You can do this.
Every damn time a flag is thrown...even if it's totally obvious...I think Mich is gunna get screwed.
They could dong punch Funchess at the fifty before the snap and somehow, someway...Funchess would get a taunting penalty.
Just play. Prison rules.
Connor Cook will not beat this team.
Michigan's offense is good enough to score enough points on this defense. Just have to stay focused and not worry about the game outside the game.
Love Denard! Good to see him there.
The key is 1st down. State all out blitzes on 2nd and 3rd
WE LOVE YOU, MAN!!!
Yeah Denard, I think we'll take you for the rest of your life.
So who is surprised that running from under center didn't work?
Good question Holly "Why do you want to be here?"
Just stop talking.
GO BLUE CHESSON!
Devins been sacked 478 times today, and we're still playing from under center. I need more beer.
There you go Chesson
Holy QB cliches Denard!
Big time catch
What a catch!
Devin didn't step into the throw, threw it late, CHESSON MAKES A PLAY!!!!
Jehuuuuuuu my duuuuuuuude
There will be more of those.
And I think we can all thank Denard for that one. We love you DENARD!
Fuck yeah, Chesson!! Gotta stay on your feet, but that was damn impressive.
He was there early
put a little meat on him and he looks like Manningham
Thought the same thing especially with the #86
Damn, that was a great play by Chesson
Clear as day.
Quick screen! Gain of 6? 7?
Fuck yeah, take those easy yards out in space.
Yeah! A quick pass!
Well, back to normal.
Can we please change up the timing of the QB-center exchange!!!!!!!!
WTH with the 3rd and 2 call.
Running the ball on 3rd and 2 with the entire MSU defense in the box is a great idea...
Slow developing lateral moving plays don't covert third downs on this D
This x 1000
That was a bad play call, like Borges was plaing it safe or something.
Centering for the FG. ;)
Did you expect Al to be aggressive there? Remember, we are on the road, so if course he'd call a conservative play. Makese fucking sick.
Why run there??????
STOP DOING THAT
Veer is not working. Am I the only one who sees that? Stop playing with 'em
I'm pretty sure Sparty sees it, my dog sees it, the painter here at work right now saw it as well.
That was a terrible play call. Absolutely terrible.
You were having success through the air, why go away from it.
Of course MSU got away with a blatent PI on first down, which they conveniently didn't show.
Alright Gibbons. Terrible kick, but it did what it had to do. Go Blue.
Gibbons sucks. Wile should be the kicker.
Gibbons has been our best kickers in yeeeeaaaars. Sorry he's in a rough spot but he also has the record for most consecutive kicks made at Michigan
We'll take it
Wow. Just wow.
Gibbons has looked like a mental mess since PSU.
I'll take that bounce. Defense keeps it up and we can make this work!
Man, don't get many chances to get in the redzone so I obviously wish we couldve gotten the TD but you cant complain much there. We got to 3rd & 2 and they stopped us
Only complaint would be that that 3rd & 2 play screamed run. There were 9 Spartans going downhill at the snap
Good called game so far by Borges, but that last one was pretty stinky. run/pass option would have been better.
I'll take the 3
Thank you Lady Luck. About time you showed your face on the 2013 Wolverines.
wow. that wasn't too pretty twice in a row. Like the idea of DG running it, but I'd rather see a run/pass option.
Still. moving the ball deep.
out there...that last playcall was enough to make you shut up. Awful.
because Gardner hasn't been sacked 1,000 times so far.
Fuck you Al pass the ball when there are 11 in the box.
You could see that play coming in the formation.
So I know we made that kick but maybe Wile is a better kicker overall.... he's clearly better from long, is he that much worse in closer?
Whew, that would've been an unnecessary fuel to the crowd if we didn't get lucky
Terrible play call on that last play.
Pretty much the entire section I'm sitting in called a Gardner run.
To see Gibby put one through the uprights
We're running to setup the pass right? Borges is all over it. Don't worry. You cant block while out numbered? Execute!
These fucking slow developing plays all fail. Why do we keep trying reads, or play action, or under center passes, or anything up the middle against this pressure?
Gibbons is back to making me nervous every time he steps up to kick.
Should have run a naked boot leg
I would've gone with slants
I said no penalties and no dumb plays and we can score a td. The 3rd down play was cleary a dumb call.
Gibbons is back to making me nervous every time he steps up to kick.
Overall, I'm encouraged. It's a struggle but we can move the ball better than them, so far.
Ok...I think it's safe to say something got in Gibbons head during the PSU game. He may have made that kick somehow there, but I don't feel comfortable with him kicking at the moment.
Now Sparty has to flip field position. I'm okay with that.
Devin tweaked his ankle in the first and doesn't seem to be planting to throw that well.
Has called a terrible game so far. Spread it out and utilize funchess and gallon
