[MSU: Football win or basketball sweep?]

Surprisingly slow morning so I want to continue to bask in the glory of victory!

During the build up to the first meeting between Michigan and Sparty, 97.1 TheTicket was doing asking listeners if they would rather take the football win or a basketball sweep.  I would lean towards the football win over the bball sweep.

That being said, in the wake of all the facebook, twitter, real life Spartan rationalizing about how they "rolled" us in EL and we only beat them by 1 point at home, find a Sparty fan who wouldn't take our record against them in the two major sports.  Yes we squeaked out a comeback football win with no touchdowns at home, yes we were lucky to lose by ONLY 23 points in EL, and yes we squeaked out a 1 point win at home in bball, but a win in football and a split in bball is great for summer bragging rights.  Hockey is a nice bonus LOLSparty.

Hopefully we get a chance to take the season series against Sparty, OSU, and/or Indiana...  and punch Wisconsin in the mouth.  Go Blue!

Mod edit: Changed the title to be more informative. Generally, ellipses at the end mean the title isn't great. JGB.

Save yourself the aggravation and don't listen to 97.1. That being said, I'd take a win in football with no questions asked.

It was them who were discussing the topic.

Karsch and Anderson are pretty good.  I think everyone will agree that Stony and Bill are pretty boring in the morning b/c they don't really discuss sports and Valenti and Foster is a clown show.

and Bill is truly the worst radio show I have ever heard.  Their topics are terrible, Stony is like 60 and talks about sex all the time, and Bill knows less about sports than my mother (my mother does not know much about sports).  I don't know why that is their morning show but it is a really, really lame one.

Valenti and Foster is a clown show, but it is one I have rather came to enjoy.  Their bias against Michigan is obvious so it is kind of like watching news on MSNBC or Fox News.  However, I really feel like Valenti has show quite a bit of restraint with regard to basketball..  He knew the blowout in East Lansing was a fluke and admitted as much.  He actually knows quite a bit about the Michigan basketball team and talks about objectively with some pretty good insight.  It is better than Pat O'Brian on the Fan.

Have they not re-paired Stoney and Wojo?

know.  Stoney is not a morning radio personality.  In an all sports format like the old Jamie and Brady he could pull it off, but he is really bad as an "all-purpose" personality that they are looking for in the morning.  I actually think they could move Jamie to the morning and move Stoney to the six oclock slot with Wojo.  They would still have the Bill issue in the morning, and a pink slip is the only way to solve that one.

The ticket's daytime shows are pretty Spartan biased, I'd rather stream it from 10-5 than listen to anything that the West Side of Michigan has to offer. The national programs (Cowturd, Rome, Dan Patrick) are the same every single day. At least 97.1 will focus solely on Detroit Teams/Detroit issues. The local shows for the West Side blow as well.

Huge "Self/Prodcut Promotion" Simonson  on 107.3 is the worst. The dude slobbers all over Izzo/Dantonio and is a talking commercial break, even when commercials aren't on. Any caller who says anything remotely intelligent or challenges his "Huge" opinion is either hung up on, or has the subject changed immediately to Brann's or Miller Lite.

Don't even get me started on Sean "Stuttering" Baligian. The guy's voice is simply intolerable. He's another admitted Sparty slap whose only great contribution is when he has "Jim Leyland" or "Dr. Lou Holtz" impersonators on. His cronie, producer Drew is about as useful as a poopy flavored lollypop. The show was better when Terp (Michigan fan) was on, and when Killer Kowalski was alive.

Couldn't agree more about those national shows.  However, 97.1 from 2-5 is unlistenable.  Valente's trolling for callers is so over-the-top obvious that I won't listen.

The funny thing is that I don't remember Foster being such a boob when his on-air partner was Art Regner.  It could be that I just didn't notice because of Regner's affection for all things Michigan.

Valente is the worst, though.  I don't believe anything that comes out of his mouth.  90% of what he says is intended to get people to call in, the other 10% is spin (which could also be intended to bring in callers).

Schtick has worn thin for sure. Valenti really does just troll for Michigan fans to bash. I figured with a journalist who also writes for the Det News, Foster would be a little more apt to provide Detroit perspective...espcially since Valenti hates all of the Detroit professional teams, but I think Valenti runs the ship and management just wants Foster to placate for ratings' sake. Within the next 3 years I bet Valenti will have a smaller national show (early morning or night time) on CBS radio or Yahoo Sports radio...not because of his talent, but because of his style of delivery.

They do, however, have pretty solid insight in some of the social/political/economic issues that plague Detroit.

Ratings, ratings, ratings. That's all Mike has to say when people call him out. Maybe your ratings are so high because there's nothing else to listen to in Metro Detroit from 2-6...

don't have the money to fill that with local personalities anymore.  Shep can be a moron but he is better than anything else available in the morning.  Killer's death was really kind of the final nail in the coffin for DFN.  He had some good insider information for Lions fans and when he died all that was left was Baligan being a boob, talking hockey with the five people that listened, and running off any insightfull callers by being an ass.  I think they will just stick with Shep in the morning and try to stay afloat with national syndicates.

Don't beat up too hard on Drew: I went to High School with the guy. Awesome guy, even if he's a Sparty slappy. The radio show isn't a format that he excels in, but to the best of my knowledge, he wasn't really ever expected to step into that role, it was just sort of something he fell into after Terp was gone.

It's football just because of the recent history.

I think this answer changes depending on that recent history...but as of now. It's football. If we beat MSU 5-6 straight times and re-establish the pre-Rich Rod domination. Then I'd lean to basketball.

Also you have to take the sports into effect. One regular season football loss is A LOT bigger than two regular season basketball losses.

Losing in football hurts your chances for a BCS National Championship.

Losing in basketball just hurts seeding in the tournament.

...we also could still beat MSU in the B1G Tournament after being swept in the regular season.

Would you rather beat IU in the regular season and finish the regular season undefeated on your home floor? (It is assumed that we would lose to IU in the Championship game of the B1G Tourney)

OR...

Lose to IU in the regular season, but beat them in the B1G Tournament (to win the B1G Tournament)?

If you took option #2, what if I said, IU losses to OSU and option 1 would give Michigan a share of the regular season B1G Championship as well as continuing the home winning streak?

Indiana is two games ahead of Michigan in the standings right now.  The game next weekend is fairly meaningless in terms of conference ranking unless IU loses to OSU this week (in Assembly Hall).  Since that's not likely, I'd take the B1G Tournament Championship over and undefeated season at Crisler.

Edit: Michigan can't do better than a tie (possibly four ways) in the B1G reagular season.  I'd prefer the outright tournament championship along with the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.  Honestly, I think that more weight will be given to that than regular season standings when the seeding comes out next week.

The game against IU at Crisler could be very important for our tourney seeding.  A loss at home is more unforgiveable than a loss on a neutral court.  Also, a loss there would probably leave us as the #4 or #5 seed, which means a tough road to the BTT title.  In short, it's a big game even if we have no shot at the regular-season title.

Conference tournaments are fun, but IMO the emphasis is really placed on the regular season and then on the NCAA tournament.

I would ask any Spartan fan if blowing us out in East Lansing makes up for their season turning into a complete tire fire since?

For all their talk, all we've learned is that when faced with the same brutal schedule gaunlet, MSU could fare no better than us.  Trying to imply superiority where none really exists using margins of victory as evidence is lame.

At the end of the season, the team with the better shot at one seed, aside from the Hoosiers is going to be us.  They can choke on that.

This is an interesting question. I posted the question of who the MgoBoard thought of as our #1 BBall rival was and although there was nothing close to a unanamous decision, the plurality said MSU. Considering they are at best our #2 football rival, I would love to sweep them in Bball. From my standpoint, I expect the football team to win. Sweeping them in basketball is a bigger accomplishment to me, as I see them as a basketball school and I like beating them at their speciality.

But football is life.

And frankly, I'm not one to complain about refs, but if not for the weirdest sequence of getting a time back into the game on the road I may have ever seen with under 2 minutes of every possible call going against a team to turn a 10 point lead to a 3 point lead, this game was well on the way to being a 15 point blow out too. For some reason the refs bailed them out of that humiliation where we couldn't get a break up there to help us get out of our funk. (Not that we deserved one; we played like ass up there. But State was ready to fall apart down here then foul, and one, lane violation, foul, etc.)
