MSU: Best team ever?

Submitted by Bixler on

MSU did something this year that they have only done two other times, that is to achieve double digit wins in a season.  Previously they won 10 games in 1999 and in 1965.  Having won 11 games this season and with the potential, although slim, to win a 12th game, is this the best team that Sparty has fielded in their history?

I am actually surprised that they have now done this only three times.  I thought with their long history, they would have done it more often.  Guess this is a testament to their mediocrity over much of the past 100 years.  As a comparison, Michigan has achieved double digit wins 25 times!  Guess that is why we are the Leaders and Best!  Go Blue!

I'm just getting back to the site after the holidays, and I actually thought I stumbled onto RCMB with this thread.  Seriously, I could care less if this is MSU's best season ever, worst season ever, or just a season.  M is playing in a bowl game in a couple of days, and that's the only football that needs to be here.

1965 (10-1, lost Rose Bowl) and 1966 (9-0-1).  Those teams had great defenses led by one of the greatest defensive linemen ever, Bubba Smith.

The 1966 team was ranked #2 when they played #1 Notre Dame in the last game of the season in what was considered "the game of the century."  The game ended in a 10-10 tie with Notre Dame, with the ball at their own end of the field, elected to run out the clock rather than try to move the ball to score.

An interesting side-note is that game greatly overshadowed the Michigan-OSU game played the same day.  Neither school like that, and thus a new rule was made that all non-confernece games had to be played before a certain date (something like the end of September or 1st week in October).
