MSU AD on 2011 Schedule
Here is my favorite quote so far in this whole expansion fiasco:
"We could be a top-10 team next season," athletic director Mark Hollis said Wednesday, "and start Big Ten play 0-4."

He might be right if that were to happen. I hope he's wrong.
That sort of excuse making is part of the larger problem in the fan base.

UM fans are stunned MSU fans can trash on UM's season last year when, if they faced OSU in that schedule, they also would have ended up 5-7. without a coaching transition. in the 3rd year of their program. etc etc etc.

MSU does have a tougher schedule than Michigan does. The "swing" game is Michigan vs MSU. MSU obviously has the tougher opponent because they have to play Michigan while Michigan gets to play MSU in that slot.

Mostly its "We are going to the Final Four again this year" after I remind him that two years of football dont make a lifetime and we will soon be back...

and 12 years of basketball give us Spartans something to be optimistic about. Not to mention women's basketball.

It says a lot about our two programs when we consider a 5-7 season utter disaster and you consider a 6-7 season a sign of progress. Have fun with your protected rivalry with Indiana.

that MSU fans think 6-7 was progress. You might have heard that from a small percentage of MSU fans. I've noticed that UM fans seem to have such tight butts these days that they want to generalize to all MSU fans.
Nothing that I said is guaranteed, and I made that clear. MSU could go 7-5 or 6-6 this year, and it would be a huge setback. But 8-4 would be okay. Anything better would propel the program because recruiting is going well. Most UM fans are worried. There is a chance that MSU goes 9-3 with wins over ND, Wisconsin, and Michigan. If that happens, look out. If it doesn't, and UM goes 8-4 (my pick for UM), things will soon return back to "normal." But there's a chance they don't. That's why we MSU fans are watching with great interest.

MSU being a top 10 team? Hah! Yeah right. At best they could be in the 20s next year, but losing Greg Jones will hurt.

There are only 4 MSU threads on the front page with 2 days until the first game...come on guys, we need more!

MSU's first 4 Big Ten opponents are Nebraska, Michigan, OSU and Wisconsin. My interpretation was that he was suggesting that those 4 teams could be top 10 caliber themselves, so even if MSU was the 10th best team in the country, it might not be good enough to avoid an 0-4 start in the Big Ten.
Yeah, I like to LOL-SPARTY on occasion, but it is pretty obvious that Hollis was just making light of the schedule.

Don't you know that UM fans thrive on being superior to all things MSU? The MSU AD makes a comment that he intends to be lighthearted and to make a point about schedule toughness, and it gets big play on mgoblog.
That's what's really changed. UM fans never used to pay attention to MSU. Now some UM fans are obsessed.

He's right.

Here's a down arrow to get you started.
EDIT: That came across a little harsher than I intended. Some Michigan fans have always been obsessed with MSU. This season, there's much more riding on that game than in most years.
Plus, try having an obnoxious ex-girlfriend nag in your ear constantly (and say nothing important) and see how long you can ignore it without letting a "shut up, bitch" float across every so often.

to compare this Blog to the RCMB. Don't come here preaching about rival obsession when Spartan fans practically invented it.

He's saying MSU could be a top 10 team in the Big 10. But with the schedule, they may finish, you know, just outside of the top 10 teams depending on how Illinois and Indiana fare.

It all comes down to the brass spittoon....I knew that rivalry was an important one
EDIT: Apparently Michigan State has the worst trophies in college football. A spittoon, a megaphone and the ugliest trophy ever created. Well done sparty.

Paul Bunyan is beautiful, and more so when he's in Ann Arbor.
But a megaphone and a spittoon? Lame.
September 2nd, 2010 at 8:22 PM ^
That's because he was invented by a U of M grad. (The trophy, not the legend)

forgot about Paul Bunyan and was talking about the Land Grant trophy.
