MSU 2010 Defensive Forecast

Submitted by RationalMSUfan on
MSU projected starting defense for those interested. ** indicates returning starter. * indicates returning contributor For those not, please disregard. DE: Tyler Hoover*/RS Sophomore DT: Jerel Worthy**/RS Sophomore DT: Blake Treadwell*/Sophomore DE: Colin Neely**/Senior OLB: Eric Gordon**/Senior MLB: Greg Jones**/Senior OLB: Chris Norman*/Sophomore DB: Johnny Adams*/RS Sophomore DB: Chris L. Rucker**/Senior FS: Trenton Robinson**/RS Sophomore SS: Marcus Hyde**/Senior Key Losses (our Defense was pretty terrible so tough to call any one loss "key"): Trevor Anderson (DE) Jeremy Ware (CB) Oren Wilson (DT) Brandon Denson (LB). Forecast: The strength of this group is obviously the LB core anchored by Greg Jones. Gordon is a very solid/respectable Big Ten LB. Normon was a prized recruit, but his freshman year was a waste IMO and he should have redshirted IMO. There is also a lot of talk of MSU switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4. I suspect we will do this a lot on 3rd down passing situations in an effort to get 5-star recruit Will Gholston on the field. In my experience, I don't expect much from true freshman recruits that play "physical positions" regardless of their star rating. With that said, I think WG could be an effective pure pass rusher in passing situations. I just don't think he is physically ready to play 1st and 2nd down against run heavy type teams. The Defensive Line should be adequate. At Defensive Tackle, Jerel Worthy was very good as a redshirt freshman. Blake Treadwell was a high level recruit and I expect him to be servicible in his second year. We also have experienced depth behind them in Kevin Pickleman and Juco Anthony White. Defensive End we are in search of a playmaker. Tyler Hoover played his best game of the season in the bowl game against T.Tech. He is also one of those "spring practice superstars". We'll see if it carries over into the regular season. Colin Neely is on the other side. He was solid against the run last year, but is not a dynamic pass rusher. The giant ??????? is the secondary. We were awful against the pass last year. Part of the secondary's struggle can be attributed to the lack of pressure from the front 4. We had a decent sack total last year, but that is fools gold because a large %% of our sacks came from blitzes which leaves your DB's vulnerable. Our two starting CB's are actually pretty good. Chris L Rucker has a lot of experience and could be in the running for a 2nd team all big ten. Johnny Adams played as a true freshman (had a nice pick 6 against Purdue), but sat out least year after his grandmother passed away before the ND game. A lot is expected out of him. The fear at the CB position is the lack of death. If one of these two gets hurt we are left with Freshman or RedShirt Freshman in their place. The giant hole on this defense IMO is at the safety position. Marcus Hyde is a hitter and good in run support but is very poor in pass coverage. As a senior I think he is what he is at this point in his career. There is at least hope with Trenton Robinson at the other safety spot as he is still young enough to expect improvement.

I actually appreciate this post, as I always wonder where our opponents are at in comparison to us. It sounds like you guys are in the same boat as us with the D.

for the analysis. I know that I enjoy reading about other B10 teams, so this is interesting to me. Getting Greg Jones back was incredibly huge for the MSU defense...he is the heart and soul of that team, and should make a below average defence a bit closer to average. Like you, I think that teams with the ability to throw will just pick apart the secondary...it is not good. I always liked the name Kevin Pickelman, for some reason. Don't know a damn thing about him as a player, but I am a believer that there is always a spot on a team for a kid with a funny name.

but I'll scout Sparty the week of the Sparty game. If I wanted to learn more about your team I'd go to an MSU blog. I've jumped on Pogue before about this, and don't want to sound unwelcoming or douchey, but I just don't get the blog behind enemy lines concept. There are about 7.4 million things I'd rather do with my time than be a Michigan expert on an Ohio State blog, or something to that effect.

that mine is only one opinion and many others will disagree and encourage the Sparty to continue. I will indeed kill them as well when the time comes. No, dude, Rational is welcome to speak his piece, and I am welcome to a rebuttal. I will never neg him just because he's an East Lansing kinda guy as long as he remembers his place on a Michigan blog and doesn't go disrespectful or combative. I have no reason to suspect he will, either.

We're confronted by four months of soul deadening off season, an interval to be filled inevitably by 99 threads about Denard v Tate for every one that contains new information, and you're turning up your nose at a well composed, thoughtful post about a 2010 Michigan opponent? Get ready for World Cup, because we're going to get a lot further OT before kickoff.

I couldnt disagree more with your premise and definition of this blog. Brian has said posts on other Big 10 teams are not OT. They are encouraged. It doesnt matter if the poster happens to be a fan behind enemy lines or not. This is a valuable post that talks about the depth chart of one of our main rivals. And since a majority of people around here cant bring themselves to talk about MSU without going herp derp Winston, I'm glad to some legit discussion on the topic. We have great posters here that root for other teams, its one reason why this blog is so great. Stick to Rivals or Scout message board if you dont want talk of the other Big 10 teams like this And you are more than welcome to skip my IU breakdown post when it comes around to it.

I think that one of the unique (and neat) aspects of this blog is that it draws fans of other teams. I think we get some great insights from Irish, and humor from Poguemahone. And yeah, given the dead time of year, these posts should be more than welcome; otherwise we're going to have to start posting recipes or something.

I was away from the Interwebs most of the afternoon and just got back to this thread, and after reading Jamiemac's comments, I asked myself: If this was written by some guy named GoBlue1245 or something to that effect, would I have been all grouchy old man on him?? No. I would not. So in some ways I let my skepticism get ahead of the content itself, which is never a good thing. I still raise the eyebrow at visiting fans, but that never means they aren't welcome to contribute, or that they can't have something worth saying. I don't think I'm really apologizing, but I'll admit that some of the other faithful's comments have forced me to look at it in a different light.

Everybody knows that the MSU players have had a pretty good defense team. I digress...thanks for sharing. It truly is breath of fresh air to hear from a rational MSU fan, so it's not just a clever name.

OP: Do you really think Rucker is that good? Every single one of my MSU friends hate him, at least as far as his play goes. Whenever I watched them play, I saw him getting picked on quite a bit. Just curious as to why you single him out as good.

What happened to Wilson? I thought he still had eligibility left. Did something happen after the season that would get him removed from the team? EDIT: Was the sarcasm not clear, or did the beat down after the team banquet stop being funny? Please let me know. Thank you.

That MSU will come fast out of the gate, as usual. With Cousins back, it should take some of the pressure off the MSU D ... For a while. Once opposing teams - like UM - get a good look at game film, they'll find the weaknesses. The stronger B10 offenses, (which should include UM this year) will find that MSU secondary -- book it. Could make for some interesting (in the Chinese sense) games for Spartan fans during the heart of the B10 schedule. Thanks for the post.

I think Gohlston is going to provide you with more solutions on the Dline than just passing downs. The more experience he gets the better he will be as the year goes on. He may only be part of a rotation at the beginning of the year but as the season goes on I would expect to see him as a common feature.

The giant hole on this defense IMO is at the safety position.
Hmmm, has a familiar ring to it. Nice to hear we're not the only team in the conference struggling to fill the safety spot.
