I doubt any halftime performance we do can top that. Michigan wins.
I thought that myself when I read that article that talked about a Data Scientist(tm)
I doubt any halftime performance we do can top that. Michigan wins.
That was funny
Maybe AJ Williams drove her to the game. Too soon?
This is ridiculous. She should retire immediately - totally unacceptable behavior.
If this were due to a legitimate medical condition, I'm sure it would have been disclosed to the University community by now and especially so to the Board of Regents.
I've never been fond of MSC before, but I can't stand her now.
I just read your comment with the voice of Abe Froman. Very appropos Sausage King
This is actually pretty worrisome. Isn't it more likely that she was having some kind of neurological issue? She's never been known to have problems with substance abuse. She's been president for over ten years now, so if she had a penchant for getting hammered on the job, there would have been other incidents by now.
Well, either she has a medical condition or she was on something... Long, slurred words. Very strange behavior.
I think a lot of it may have had to do with her hearing herself on the stadium PA while she was speaking. That can mess up a speech pattern.
Except she speaks at the commencement ceremony that is held at the stadium every year.
Exactly. Very hard to buy this explanation when this is a woman who made a career out of public speaking and speaks at this exact venue annually.
I can't wait to see how liquored up she gets for the MSU commencement address.
That's it!! She was just practicing! She wants to get it perfect.
After her speech, she's going down to Cedar Village to set some couches on fire with the bros.
"Sixty minutes of inebriated speechmaking; that's what we try to do. We're just glad we don't get caught every halftime."
Seriously; who gave her the mic under these circumstances? They could have just waved at the crowd, and avoided this colossal embarassment.
The funny thing is, is that if Dave Brandon had noticed her condition, kept the mic, and given a generic "Thank you Mary-Sue" speech, I guarantee some people on this board would bitch about how he's "hogging the spotlight, and making it all about himself"
Drunk in public?
Surely it's got to be something like that.
I legitimately thought she was having/just had a minor stroke, it was that awful. Everyone in my section was laughing and commenting on the likelihood of her being hammered but to me it sounded like more than just that.
Drunk as shit.
Mary popped a Molly.
Ever think this lady was forced to drink because of the predictable play calling by Borges? She was probably forced to drink every time we lined up in I form and lost yardage.
This could be the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen. Just amazing.
And as she was wobbling off the field (nobody was helping her, exactly, although it looked like about four different people were expecting to catch her) she was sort of dancing. It was weird. Looked like a drunk sorority girl wearing her boyfriend's letter jacket; it was about four sizes too big.
Man I saw the thread earlier about this, but holy shit. If there was no medical condition involved and just alcohol, I am pretty sure MSC probably doesn't remember halftime at all. That is beyond tanked speech patterns.
For comparision purposes commencement speech by MSC
And them it went on YouTube and 112k turned into millions.
Because I cringe too much when things get really awkward. This is why I have trouble getting through episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, even though I love the show.
Drunk as a skunk.
Don't watch Hello Ladies then. It hurts watching it. I have to actually look away bc its so painful at times.
She does not have a neurological issue nor did she have a stroke.. the university JUST put out a video of her this week as she advertised the University's newest fundraising campaign launch.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?
If you watch this.. you can CLEARLY see that she is perfectly normal.. when sober.
That very fundraising campaign that you mentioned may have been the origin of this episode. There was a big private party for major donors inside Crisler on Saturday morning. I, uh, wasn't invited; I expect that maybe there was an open bar.
Yeah great timing with this new fundraising campaign. I think I will donate a dollar for every positive rushing yard Michigan is able to gain.
Congratulations! you just won $68! that's one hell of a return on investment.
and MSC wasn't there anyway. But I've seen her at several of these events, some of which do have open bars, and one of which was on NYE, and I've never even seen her have one drink. Sadly I think a stroke is a more likely explanation than drunkenness.
can we give away this evening??
Leaders and best...
I hope Brady Hoke does fire me ( and then threw up on the 50 yard line)...
-Something confusing her acoustically? Health issue?
-No one told her ahead of time? If so, way to throw someone under the bus.
I'm not even made. I'm impressed.
About the Jets? Struggling?
At least she wasn't looking at Al Borges and saying, "you're so cute, I just want to kiss you right now...."
Now that was a halftime interview!
An alternative explanation is this:
Or she was just wasted. Pick your poison.
If you listen to Gordon Gee speak first, MSC's speech is worthy of comparison to Abraham Lincoln.
if she was upset the content of her speech did not imply it. It's as if she has no self realization. I at least know when I am drunk.
Was she roofied perhaps? This is epic fail. There doesn't need to be explanation but it begs it. It's shocking, disturbing and sad. If she didn't have a stroke - then roofie makes the most sense - though I don't know what drug does that - you would have to be in high school not to realize you were that drunk with alcohol.
Basically, what's going to happen is that at 9AM tomorrow, the Board of Regents will put out a press release saying she had an allergic reaction to a new medication or some such thing, they've met/spoken with her, it was an isolated incident that wasn't helped by the speaker system/microphone lag, and that they have full confidence she will be fine to assume her duties through the end of her term. The search for a new president continues, Go Blue, etc.
But really, she was drunk. We all know it. And the constant barrage of jokes at Michigan's expense will continue. The autumn of our discontent and all that.
Laugh with her. It is pretty funny as long as she isn't suffering from a medical condition. Everybody should be able to laugh at themselves at least some times. Looking forward to Brian's column tomorrow.
Blames it on the wireless mic.
I happen to be an audio engineer in a duplicit alternate life and I honestly don't buy it...unfortunately...
and how is it that Mark Harmon knows how to talk normally with a microphone at the Big House: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjWWcbnNHr0
It's not the crime, it's the cover up...
a crime, either. Which is why this will go no further.
I think you could plausibly assume that there was no alcohol involved but a tired, blowsily/blithely relaxed lady garbling an impromptu speech. Whether you cut her some slack probably depends on whether you liked her in the first place.
I thought I liked her. But then I heard her talking about how great DB was. . . :)
It's funny - the only thing that really bothered me about the clip was the praise of Brandon. I think some people here are taking this way too seriously. She's a 70-year-old woman who has served the university well (in my opinion), is nearing retirement, and had a few drinks at a football game (apparently at an event that further serves the university). I'm more than willing to laugh this off as a "we've all been there" moment. Plus, there's something endearing and human about it, given that she holds the position she holds and has no known history of these kinds of things.
It would be a little more believable if half of her job didn't involve speaking through microphones. She has been doing this for decades, and all of a sudden she can't handle the delay?
If one of the Big Ten's referees had that much trouble with a wireless microphone in a stadium, they would be sent back to doing junior high school games.
