Yeah... My dad and I looked at each other and we simultaneously said "hammered."
MSC halftime speech video
She's not hammered, she just didn't execute.
no words. Simply brilliant.
I thought it might be bc of youth. The regents need to do a better job of coaching g her for halftime shows.
Lock down the thread. He wins.
Give him all the mgopoints. All of them.
Take mine. You deserve them.
Oh well played.
Bang him hard.
I just think she needs a new coordinator. Are their any up-and-coming speech coordinators out there? I think we should pay whatever it takes to bring the speech coordinator at Stanford to Michigan.
Holyyyyy shiiiitttt I lol'd
This has to be on TWIS
I would buy the T-shirt.....!
Some might say that this is a day of great shame for MSC and the University of Michigan
This is the greatest YouTube video of all time.
I was beyond hammered when I heard this live and STILL thought she sounded like she was destroyed. It sounds even worse now that I'm sober.
That there was NOT video evidence of this. Maybe she took too much cold medication.
You may be right about the cold medicine. I was in a meeting with her the day before the game and she was pretty sick...
Are we sure it was drinking? It could be but that would be, well, stupid.
I would worry it would be something serious.
I had wondered the same thing. Seems like we would have heard it in the news by now though.
She probably went to the bottle watching that pathetic first half from our offense !
That's what I thought when I heard it live. Almost sounded as though she did. Although, I have never heard anything about it. Everyone around me was saying drunk and chuckling but it sure seemed as if it was something else.
So who should be fired for putting drunk MSC out there in this condition? Borges? Whoever made that call to do this though should be held accountable. IMO
She saw the same 1st half we did.....who can blame her.
Krunk, or major medical emergency.
At half-time of Michigan games.
Far more entertaining and yet somehow similar to MSC and the 2013 football season.
I think that's the only thing left that we can do to feature Jet Pack Guy.
Wow. I went to take a leak during half and when I got back my wife said whoever was just speaking was hammered. Being hammered myself I really didnt understand what she was referring to until now.
Holy Shit that's freaking awesome. Even the President of the University needs to get sauced up to watch this team play. Now I dont feel quite so alone.
That pretty much sums up our season right there. What an embarrassment. Was she around when Moeller got canned? That's about when Michigan started to dive...
Moeller was gone way before MSC got hired.
And it's too bad that this always gets trotted out when there's an alcohol-related incident. People who know Gary Moeller will tell you he was never more than an occasional social drinker. Never out of control, always mild-mannered. He had one bad night, someone taped it, it got blown up on TV, Michigan and Moeller's lawyers alike totally botched how it was handled... And forever, he's the coach with the drinking problem. He didn't hurt anyone, he didn't crash a car, he didn't destroy any property. He was just drunk.
Yes, he deserved to face the consequences for his actions, but it was a pretty badly handled situation at all levels from the president on down to the lawyers. And he doesn't deserve to be treated like a drunk for the rest of his life.
You can thank Les Miles for that night of debauchery.
First off, BC, thanks for defending Moeller here. The way he got branded after that night at Excalibur was shameful, and he deserves better from the Michigan fanbase.
Second, it's both a bit better and worse than what you state: "He had one bad night, someone taped it, it got blown up on TV".
Moeller got screwed by the Southfield PD. The infamous tape was made at Providence Hospital by the police. An admitted MSU fan and police officer saw fit to release the tape to the press, and that's what triggered the Moeller dismissal. As someone with experience working in the state of MI's courts at the time, there is no good reason to do this from a law enforcement perspective. It was a shameful abuse of discretion, and cost Moeller dearly. This is based on memory, but I recall it pretty clearly.
However, Moeller's actions at Excalibur were worse than being "just drunk", at least if police reports are to be believed. Look HERE for a complete description, but Moeller's behavior went well-beyond "just drunk".
For all of that, Gary Moeller loved Michigan with all his heart, had an awful night where he did not actually hurt anyone, and got thrown under the bus because of a press leak that never should of happened. I was sorry to see him fired back then, and am happy to see him welcomed at games and other university functions as we move forward.
or to restrain myself because she actually had something medically going on.
When I started laughing the people I was with had very concerned looks on their faces. Not knowing who MSC is, one of them said she could have MS. Just sounded loaded to me and now hearing it again I think that is the correct call.
I didn't know what the hell was going on at the time but this time around it's funny although I wish there wasn't a copy of it anywhere.
Listening to the video now, after the fact, just freaks me out. Is it more than being totally drunk?
We should probably re-hire Rich Rod and ask him how he feels about the question you proposed.
I hope she was just drunk and it is not a medical condition. She's not exactly a spring chicken anymore.
somebody had to take over for pregaming with Pat.
Scary. As someone else said it sounds like someone who had a mild stroke. It's like a female version of Dick Clark but with milder condition. And if not that, then just a bad situation to hear your president drunk but I guess it's great symbolism for our current leadership.
in the stadium now.
Was she having a stroke?
nah man. she used to go to school in the south. she was just hopped up on shine.
It was obvious when it happened but seeing it again, I'm just, like, wow man. I hope this was the nadir of the program. I can't fathom sinking any deeper.
OSU's band try and top that halftime performance.
I doubt any halftime performance we do can top that. Michigan wins.
That was funny
Maybe AJ Williams drove her to the game. Too soon?
This is ridiculous. She should retire immediately - totally unacceptable behavior.
If this were due to a legitimate medical condition, I'm sure it would have been disclosed to the University community by now and especially so to the Board of Regents.
I've never been fond of MSC before, but I can't stand her now.
I just read your comment with the voice of Abe Froman. Very appropos Sausage King
This is actually pretty worrisome. Isn't it more likely that she was having some kind of neurological issue? She's never been known to have problems with substance abuse. She's been president for over ten years now, so if she had a penchant for getting hammered on the job, there would have been other incidents by now.
Well, either she has a medical condition or she was on something... Long, slurred words. Very strange behavior.
I think a lot of it may have had to do with her hearing herself on the stadium PA while she was speaking. That can mess up a speech pattern.
Except she speaks at the commencement ceremony that is held at the stadium every year.
Exactly. Very hard to buy this explanation when this is a woman who made a career out of public speaking and speaks at this exact venue annually.
I can't wait to see how liquored up she gets for the MSU commencement address.
That's it!! She was just practicing! She wants to get it perfect.
After her speech, she's going down to Cedar Village to set some couches on fire with the bros.
"Sixty minutes of inebriated speechmaking; that's what we try to do. We're just glad we don't get caught every halftime."
Seriously; who gave her the mic under these circumstances? They could have just waved at the crowd, and avoided this colossal embarassment.
The funny thing is, is that if Dave Brandon had noticed her condition, kept the mic, and given a generic "Thank you Mary-Sue" speech, I guarantee some people on this board would bitch about how he's "hogging the spotlight, and making it all about himself"
Drunk in public?
Surely it's got to be something like that.
I legitimately thought she was having/just had a minor stroke, it was that awful. Everyone in my section was laughing and commenting on the likelihood of her being hammered but to me it sounded like more than just that.
Drunk as shit.
Mary popped a Molly.
Ever think this lady was forced to drink because of the predictable play calling by Borges? She was probably forced to drink every time we lined up in I form and lost yardage.
This could be the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen. Just amazing.
And as she was wobbling off the field (nobody was helping her, exactly, although it looked like about four different people were expecting to catch her) she was sort of dancing. It was weird. Looked like a drunk sorority girl wearing her boyfriend's letter jacket; it was about four sizes too big.
Man I saw the thread earlier about this, but holy shit. If there was no medical condition involved and just alcohol, I am pretty sure MSC probably doesn't remember halftime at all. That is beyond tanked speech patterns.
For comparision purposes commencement speech by MSC
And them it went on YouTube and 112k turned into millions.
Because I cringe too much when things get really awkward. This is why I have trouble getting through episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, even though I love the show.
Drunk as a skunk.
Don't watch Hello Ladies then. It hurts watching it. I have to actually look away bc its so painful at times.
She does not have a neurological issue nor did she have a stroke.. the university JUST put out a video of her this week as she advertised the University's newest fundraising campaign launch.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?
If you watch this.. you can CLEARLY see that she is perfectly normal.. when sober.
That very fundraising campaign that you mentioned may have been the origin of this episode. There was a big private party for major donors inside Crisler on Saturday morning. I, uh, wasn't invited; I expect that maybe there was an open bar.
Yeah great timing with this new fundraising campaign. I think I will donate a dollar for every positive rushing yard Michigan is able to gain.
Congratulations! you just won $68! that's one hell of a return on investment.
and MSC wasn't there anyway. But I've seen her at several of these events, some of which do have open bars, and one of which was on NYE, and I've never even seen her have one drink. Sadly I think a stroke is a more likely explanation than drunkenness.
can we give away this evening??
Leaders and best...
I hope Brady Hoke does fire me ( and then threw up on the 50 yard line)...
-Something confusing her acoustically? Health issue?
-No one told her ahead of time? If so, way to throw someone under the bus.
I'm not even made. I'm impressed.
About the Jets? Struggling?
At least she wasn't looking at Al Borges and saying, "you're so cute, I just want to kiss you right now...."
Now that was a halftime interview!
An alternative explanation is this:
Or she was just wasted. Pick your poison.
If you listen to Gordon Gee speak first, MSC's speech is worthy of comparison to Abraham Lincoln.
if she was upset the content of her speech did not imply it. It's as if she has no self realization. I at least know when I am drunk.
Was she roofied perhaps? This is epic fail. There doesn't need to be explanation but it begs it. It's shocking, disturbing and sad. If she didn't have a stroke - then roofie makes the most sense - though I don't know what drug does that - you would have to be in high school not to realize you were that drunk with alcohol.
Basically, what's going to happen is that at 9AM tomorrow, the Board of Regents will put out a press release saying she had an allergic reaction to a new medication or some such thing, they've met/spoken with her, it was an isolated incident that wasn't helped by the speaker system/microphone lag, and that they have full confidence she will be fine to assume her duties through the end of her term. The search for a new president continues, Go Blue, etc.
But really, she was drunk. We all know it. And the constant barrage of jokes at Michigan's expense will continue. The autumn of our discontent and all that.
Laugh with her. It is pretty funny as long as she isn't suffering from a medical condition. Everybody should be able to laugh at themselves at least some times. Looking forward to Brian's column tomorrow.
Blames it on the wireless mic.
I happen to be an audio engineer in a duplicit alternate life and I honestly don't buy it...unfortunately...
and how is it that Mark Harmon knows how to talk normally with a microphone at the Big House: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjWWcbnNHr0
- No medical excuse;
- Absolute denial of any/all alcohol;
- Incredible proffering of "mic-delay" excuse, combined with "unexpected request for speech" excuse.
It's not the crime, it's the cover up...
a crime, either. Which is why this will go no further.
I think you could plausibly assume that there was no alcohol involved but a tired, blowsily/blithely relaxed lady garbling an impromptu speech. Whether you cut her some slack probably depends on whether you liked her in the first place.
I thought I liked her. But then I heard her talking about how great DB was. . . :)
It's funny - the only thing that really bothered me about the clip was the praise of Brandon. I think some people here are taking this way too seriously. She's a 70-year-old woman who has served the university well (in my opinion), is nearing retirement, and had a few drinks at a football game (apparently at an event that further serves the university). I'm more than willing to laugh this off as a "we've all been there" moment. Plus, there's something endearing and human about it, given that she holds the position she holds and has no known history of these kinds of things.
It would be a little more believable if half of her job didn't involve speaking through microphones. She has been doing this for decades, and all of a sudden she can't handle the delay?
If one of the Big Ten's referees had that much trouble with a wireless microphone in a stadium, they would be sent back to doing junior high school games.
When your job involves public relations to the extent that hers does, with speeches given to any number of groups on any given week, you never have the excuse of "I didn't know I was giving a speech, I'm so unprepared, and I don't know what to do with this mic."
She's given so many speeches about Michigan by this point that there has to be a pre-loaded set of things she can say in any given situation at the ready. After twelve years of this, she's a pro.
I'm embarrassed that I watched that.
I see dead people.
I think Gary Moeller should be allowed to fire her.
Yes, another Gary Moeller joke! Let's make jokes about a guy who we assume was a drunk but really wasn't!
if I have to explain it...
You don't have to explain it. I get it. My point is Moeller jokes weren't funny 15 years ago, much less now. He paid for his mistake, and he's one of our own. Enough.
during this speech, she was dropped for a 3 yards loss.
Having heard president Coleman speak many times I fear that was something neurologic (other than alcohol).
"Drunk" didn't really occur to me at first.
I honestly thought, "My God; so this is why she is retiring! She sounds terrible. What a medical catastrophe. I feel so sorry for her. I wonder what it is. She sure has deteriorated fast. Last time I heard her speak it was nothing like this. How have they kept it so quiet? Am I the last person to know about this?"
That was before she even ended her remarks.
So I think the weird thing, if she was really hammered (and I think that's the most obvious explanation at this point), is where she got the booze.
It was halftime; the University says with total commitment that there is no alcohol served in her box, "or anywhere in Michigan Stadium." Okay. Rules are rules. Got it. But what about outside of the Stadium? Crisler? The Junge Center? Anybody know exactly what was going on at the fundraising campaign kickoff party somewhere in the Crisler Center? Was that as alcohol-free as the Stadium is supposed to be? That party started early; I expect that she was there for hours before the game.
I was at graduation in May and she was fine and that was after she announced retirement so that's not it. Bizarre.
Hasn't there been alcohol served in the Regents' Box since the fancy one was put in the bottom of the old press box in the late 90s?
Her box is usually well-stocked with ice cream and soft drinks, but no booze. My party did not see her at the Crisler Center.
I'm inclined to buy the wireless mic explanation.
"We'll, ya know. We need to coach her up more."
...if we had a good football team involved in a campaign for a Big Ten championship, to talk about instead.
I'll look for her comments on the next Friday Night Drinking thread
That's a true friend of the program. Nice of you to jump on the grenade, MSC.
I'm all about representing the university and all that...
But MSC has more than bought any benefit of any doubt. I think it's hilarious and I give her a pass.
Sadly, I barely remember the speech or the halftime show... I think I was in the pisser, but lets just say if I had to speak, it would have been a little worse.
according to a press release, just a tricky microphone. Seems like that speech was as well conceived as Fitz running on first down... If one doesn't have a sense of humor about this team and situation you're going to be miserable for the rest of the year. Our kids are young, the central O line is totally ineffective , Devin is beat up and behind schedule with decision making, Hoke is a nice guy but definitely no Harbaugh, and the Big10 is an awful conference right now. At least we have the Lions to pick us up!
I woud note: It is her first time speaking at a full Big House with that speaker set up and not the pared-down graduation audio system. There's a huge difference.
This has got to be a 50+ year low point, right?
I was about that drunk at the time, but I was at home on my couch with my dog.
Either she was drunk, or she filled in for Gardner at QB for a series when I wasn't watching and took a shot to the head.
MSC TRIPPIN' BALLS. Love it!!
I couldn't even listen to this more than halfway through. I am surprised this video hasn't been "removed by user" yet.
“We rarely use live wireless microphones at Michigan Stadium because of the way that sound is distributed; it travels from the north scoreboard across the field to the south. There was significant wind that caused the sound to be delayed and distorted and created feedback during President Coleman’s speech.”
I think every referee since about 1985 would be surprised to learn that "we rarely use live wireless microphones at Michigan Stadium."
someone please comment on if the Refs sounded tanked at all during the game.
Looked it up. You're correct to a point, however..."We assume that this is because the wind "pushes the noise along." Unfortunately for our intuitions, it can easily be shown that this force is too small to account for the observed effect. The speed of sound in air is about 760 miles per hour (1,223 kph). If a typical wind is blowing at 30 mph, this is only 4% of the speed of sound, meaning that wind can only shorten or increase the distance a given sound needs to travel by that amount. The difference would be too subtle to be detected by the human ear, so obviously this does not uncover the source of the phenomenon."
What's my vel, now?
the more i think about it. All of the educated folks here, yet so stupified by an audio issue (which was my immediate and lasting guess)... this is a great university. None of you have ever participated in a conference call, VOiP classroom or webinar with sound issues?
