Movement in 247 Composite; Peters moves up, some others slide

Submitted by kevin holt on

I don't believe there is a paywall for this article on 247 (http://michigan.247sports.com/Bolt/New-4-stars-and-two-lose-5-star-stat…), but either way the site is free til the end of the year so I doubt this is overstepping. We had a couple of recruits slide (albeit not much).

The article mentions various recruits moving up and down, and includes this paragraph:

Perhaps no one team’s commits benefited more from the latest moves than Michigan State’s. Future Spartans wide receiver Cameron Chambers (No. 239 to No. 219), safety Demetric Vance (No. 261 to No. 230), offensive tackle Mike Panasiuk (No. 392 to No. 361) and quarterback Messiah deWeaver (No. 352 to No. 340) all received bumps. Meanwhile, rival Michigan saw three commits - OG Michael Onwenu (90 to 109), DE Ron Johnson (278 to 292), OT Erik Swenson (241 to 293) - fall in the overall rankings.

That paragraph does not mention, however, that Brandon Peters moved up from 80 to 62. Also, averaging the rankings of the recruits they did mention gives you 287.5 for MSU and 231.33 for UM (189 if you include Peters).

Clearly this is the most important matchup and we should feel bad.

Note: Still #6 in team rankings and a player's slide of 15 or even 50 ranks is fine (unless you're somewhere in the top of the class and fall 50 spots; that might be a red flag). We're doing just fine.

His drop was mainly for missing his entire SR season. But the kid always had tons of upside and a cannon for an arm. Biggest thing though is he loves Michigan. And if he has a year or 2 with probably the best QB developer in the country? I won't count him out. If Shane Morris does step on the field for Michigan again, it will bea far cry from the last time we saw him

No--he was dropping before that. It started during his tour of summer camps, and his showing at the Elite 11. The reason Rivals gave for dropping him as a result was lack of accuracy and touch, problems he could never seem to overcome. He then dropped more after missing his senior year. I'm the biggest Shane M-booster on the board, but the time has come for honesty regarding his career so far and his potential.

Anyone who believes those 20-40 spot moves matter even a little is too involved in the rankings, no matter if they favor M or not.  All those players in that bunch are good.  Top 25 are probably great, 25-100 really good, 100-300 also really good.

There may be a bit of a statement if they move a guy out of their top XXX lists.  So if Scout moves them out of their Scout 300 or 247 moves them out of their Top 247.  But even here I'm not concerned.

If a guy's a #93 and drops out of the ranking entirely, that's a thing.

Is it possible that the movement in the ranking is just to show that the adults worked? I can never understand the comparison among different positions.

Just win the games.

I was looking at this at lunch yesterday.

After the Rivals shakeup, we currently have the #6 class with 244.27 points.

If VV was still in our class, we would have the #5 class at 246.62 points (just ahead of Stanford)

But we lost him - HOWEVER, if we now gain Devin Bush Jr at LB instead, we go to 248.68 points (gain more from him, he would be our 7th higest ranked recruit) and be ranked #5 class just behind FSU at 249.84 points.

If we landed Rashan Gary, he alone would take us from the #6 class to the #3 class and 257.24 points, barely behind #2 LSU's 258.97 points.

WIth a very strong close, Michigan very well could contend for the top class, and solidly make the top 5.  Need a few to go our way.

I think that Peters could end up being a star. Personally, I hope Gentry is the real deal, but one of these guys will have a chance to shatter some single season records with Harbaugh at the helm.

Guys typically fall much more frequently than they rise and the majority of our guys are falling, which makes sense if most of them are in the top 300-400.

I was responding to your statement that "guys typically fall much more frequently" than they rise. That is clearly not true as each person falling is displaced by someone who inherently had to rise.

Not sure what point you are trying to make by asking if they are M commits. Are you claiming that M commits typically follow a different pattern than the overall pool? I know it seems like that sometimes, but I would bet that over time things are pretty even.

I'm struggling to see why school X would have more kids consitently heading in either direction than school Y!?

Lol. Every change listed is completely negligible. Does anyone really think there's a difference between a player ranked 352nd and one ranked 340th? Outside of the top 40 or 50, any players ranked within about 40 spots of each other are on the same level.
