Most QBs on roster in 30 years

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

When Zach Gentry and John O'Korn arrive on campus, Michigan will have 10 QBs on the roster and may still add another one.

The last time Michigan had double digit QBs on the roster was 1985 when there were 11.

A look at the QB club of 1985-

# Player Year Ht/Wt Hometown/HS
2 Bob Cernak So. 6'2/200 Lockport, IL/Lockport
3 Russell Rein Jr. 6'0/190 Oak Lawn, IL/Marist
4 Jim Harbaugh R-Jr. 6'3/200 Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto
5 John Whitledge So. 6'2/198 Delton, MI/Delton-Kellogg
6 Demetrius Brown Fr. 6'1/184 Miami, FL/Miami Beach
9 Michael Taylor Fr. 6'1/195 Lincoln Heights, OH/Princeton
9 Trey McNeil So. 5'9/185 Fort Worth, TX/Paschal
10 Kyle Anderson So. 6'1/206 Drayton Palins, MI/Kettering
12 Chris Zurbrugg R-So. 6'1/192 Alliance, OH/Alliance
16 Scott Crawford Fr. 6'3/190 Rawson, OH/Rawson
18 Mike Jones Fr. 6'3/220 Bridgeport, CT/Harding

That #4 guy did pretty well that year.

Cerno is in Wisconsin. He moved to TE his last 2 years. Rein is in Minnesota Harbs -lost track of that guy Whitledge -sadly passed away a while ago. Brown is in Florida playing music. Dude was a hell of a guitar player. Taylor is local. Loves to cook, garden, and blast DB/UM. McNeil didn't make it all 4 years. He's back in Texas. Anderson is the Lions orthopedic surgeon. Zurbrugg is a teacher in Ohio I think. Crawford transferred to Toledo after a year. Jobes- he moved to TE and broke my roommates jaw on an ear hole block. Blood everywhere. It was gross

10 QB's, 12 QB's, who gives a s***! We are never losing a game again. I've (once again for the third straight year) ventured my eyes to the 2027 schedule and see nary a loss in sight!

Apart from the "all the QBs must suck" worry, my other concern is how this affects our future recruiting for high level QBs.  No matter how awesome a QB coach you think Harbaugh is, only the supremely confident wouldn't worry about depth, and attention from the coaches.

The best guide is how many Harbaugh carried at Stanford. We're not going to be carrying 8-10 scholarship QBs. This was an interesting exercise by WD, but some posters seem to be losing sight of the fact that he's talking about 5 walkons. No recruit is going to be concerned about how many walkons are on the roster.

of going 6-7, starting the season 3-1, beating Miami (FL), and then having your starting QB (first year starter) break his arm at Michigan State, then tailspinning the rest of year through 5 losses in the last 7 games mainly because Michigan's QB experience was zero.

Panic? Yes, Jerry Hanlon probably freaked out because Bo probably yelled "never again Jerry!".

If you ask me, Bo's 1984 QB depth issues started back in 1982 which was ironically, Anthony Carter's final season and Jim Harbaugh's first.

1980: Great situation.  John Wangler Sr., (expd starter) BJ Dickey Jr., (expd starter) R, Hewlett, So. (exp'd), Steve Smith Fr. (very talented, no exp)

1981: Good situation: Steve Smith So (very talented, no exp), BJ Dickey Sr. (expd starter), R. Hewlett (exp'd), David Hall (So. Pro Style QB), G. Powell (So.)

1982: Okay situation, but depth problems: Steve Smith (expd starter), R. Hewlett (high rated QB recruit converted to CB/holder), D. Hall (Jr. pro style QB) J. Harbaugh (Fr.), G. Powell not on roster?, Brad Fisher Sr.

1983:  Uh-oh: Steve Smith (expd starter) Sr., D. Hall (expd in Rose Bowl loss and butthair win over Wash St.) Sr., J. Harbaugh (So., mop up duty exp.), Russ Rein (Fr., no exp), C. Zurbrugg (Fr., no exp).

1984: Holy fffff: Jim Harbaugh (Jr. mop up duty exp), Russ Rein (So. no exp), C. Zurbrugg (little exp), nobody.

2015 is worse than 1985 because there's no experienced Harbaugh/Zurbrugg combo.

2015 seems more like 1984 at QB, to which...goddammit.

I say the more the merrier. There's no QB currently on the team who has competently played even one series of college football.  It's possible one of them or one of the freshmen will make a leap and be decent this year, and perhaps it's even likely, but I'm not sure how much I'd want to bet on that.  Bringing in more players, some with experience ups the ante and forces everyone to work that much harder or be left out.  Having too many QBs is a much better problem than not having enough.

I'm friends with Kyle Anderson's wife. Apparently he read this thread and said some of these guys weren't quarterbacks that year, and Anderson himself was on crutches in '85.
