Most Improved Unit. Student Section?

Submitted by rayfrom19 on

From what I understand the (much maligned) student section really got their act together and showed up in force for warm-ups.  Any confirmation from those whom were there.  Was this an organized effort, a la Maize Rage?

I was toward the front of the section trying to start the wave. It did take a while to get going, but once it did it seemed to go smoothly. The only reason the wave stopped after going slow then fast was that the team scored a touchdown. The band started a rousing chorus of The Victors and the wave died there.

Student section turnout was great, but the most improved unit was still the offensive line. Loved seeing the push they got, and blockers getting to the second level.

I got to the Big House about an hour and a quarter before the game.  I would guess that with 30 minutes to go, the student section was about half full, maybe a bit more, but filled up nicely as game time approached.

I don't want to be a Debbie downer, but part of the student section has shrunk as the upper 20 or so rows, give or take, are now for the general public..

Why are we congratulating students for showing up?  When I went to school, back in the dark ages, we managed to show up for games relatively close to the start time.  Let's see what happens later in the season when the weather changes before I would consider a change in attitude.

As for leaving early, I rarely do that, but yesterday, the game had reached the point where it was boys against men, and I do not find that enjoyable.  I can't wait until we have nine B1G games and would welcome three games against top competition, even if we lost one along the way.  It is an expensive weekend for many of us out-of-towners to come to a game, and when I do,  I want to see quality contests.

earlier, but they are even worse at doing the wave this year.  They started by trying to split it from section 29 or so.  I think we might be at the point where 2-3 years have gone by without a consistent wave and very few kids know what to do anymore.

I'm a current Junior, some comments:

-I got there about an hour early, ended up in section 30, row 29.  Was fine by me.  Was still able to get a solid 4 hours of pregaming/drinking in.

-Holy Freshmen batman.  I was surrounded by them.  Sadly a lot of them didn't seem very interested in the game, there were big clusters of them sitting down and looking at their phones.  My friend and I were the only ones standing up in my immediate area after a timeout when play resumed, which irritated me.  Ended up yelling at them to stand the eff up.

-I agree with the sentiment that the section wasn't as loud/rowdy, at least where I was.  Probably again has to do with the large Freshmen numbers.

This is the first year in history where even so much as a text reliably goes through, at least on AT&T.

I agree that football is all- consuming and would refuse texts on any other subject, but my former football companion and tutor must now watch the game from the comfort of a dorm room in Maryland, so it was really swell to be able to share the game with him.

Also I can track the stats line and the scotes of other games via apps, so yay that.

...but got into section 26, went up to the top row under the press box/suites, then scooted over into section 25.  Ended up about 20 yd. line, solid view.

Have meetings until 5 pm for UTL II, am terrified where I'm going to end up.  The problem will be like at a sold out movie--lots of single seats here and there, but not enough for a group.

Also, you know when its packed you pretty much have to stand sideways.  Without an actual seat, how does one squeeze in now?  I'm expecting chaos next week.

I'm interested to see what happens next week.  Last time during UTL, the student section was so full that people just stood in the aisles for most of the game.  Seems like some stuff could go south pretty quick with the new policy, but we'll see

Got myself a student ticket to scope out the situation (it's more fun, anyway). I was surprised at how well it went. I expected a tremendous bottleneck, but things were quite efficient. The cattle corral had dissolved by at least an hour before the game, when I came in, and there was little to no wait to get in. We were assigned sections at the gate, which was not to my liking, but we were able to get good seats where we liked.

The sections were pretty well full by a half hour before kickoff. I was up in the ~50s rows, and the people around us were generally loud, knew what to do, etc. Can't speak for the youngin's in the lower rows, but that's a shame if they were less enthusiastic due to 1) being young and ill informed 2) standing in the sun for 4 hours without social lubricant (e.g. libation) to get primed 3) ???

My only real complaint, personally, is that I like to follow the band into the stadium and I don't think I would have gotten a good seat at all if I did that -- for the season opener, a notoriously poor student-turnout game, it's one thing. For a marquee game? Forget it. Which is a shame -- that is really a great part of the #gamedayexperience. Better to have a noodle than a drum cadence, then? So be it. Pasta et circenses!

It was alright. I think next week will be a mess though. It was hectic enough when people were assigned a seat 2 years ago,I can't imagine what it will be like next week.

before game time and it was great to see the student section getting full during warm ups. By the time the band went on the field the place was packed. The students did a great job.
