Ugh...Please God, don't let him leave...
landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
Ugh...Please God, don't let him leave...
It says 'he is definitely returning" in quotes which means Morris said that. Then the rest is conjecture from a non reputable source. Why worry?
You know a paper is slanted when they think Darius Morris plays for MSU.
with all of his MSU teammates being the fuck off his court.
"Editor's note: A previous version of this story named Darius Morris as a member of MSU's team. This version is correct."
"Darius Morris said all the right things after Sunday's loss to Duke ended his sophomore season.
He said he "definitely" would return for his junior year. For Michigan's success next season, that is crucial.
But Morris will investigate his draft status."
He's coming back.
Nice pointing that out. If a writer can't even get that fact straight, it kind of undermines everything else he's saying. And clearly no one over at the Freep is editing or fact-checking their articles. Shocking.
Typically, writers write the stories and someone else writes the headlines. I'd be willing to bet someone not named Mark Snyder wrote the previous headline.
THIS IS A NON-FUCKING STORY. THERE IS NOTHING NEW HERE. ALL MORRIS HIMSELF HAS SAID IS THAT HE'S COMING BACK. THIS IS MARK SNYDER MAKING SHIT UP BECAUSE HE CAN'T FIND ANYTHING ELSE TO WRITE ABOUT. SO FUCKING SICK OF THIS SHIT FROM THE FREEP.
THIS SHOULD TELL YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Editor's note: A previous version of this story named Darius Morris as a member of MSU's team.
your avatar makes the fact that you wrote in all caps seem that much more intense.
Go crazy? Don't mind if I do.
for saying it, so I didn't have to. You also made it look way better. A++++ would read again.
Everything I was thinking and feeling while reading this was perfectly captured in your post. So, thank you for that!
Agreed, this is pure speculation, going so far as to put words in Morris' mouth. This is the worst kind of sports journalism. To take a page from Snyder's book:
"Morris hasn't said that he will refuse to speak to Mark Snyder or the Freep next year, so we have absolutely no reason to believe this will be so. However, when a paper as shitty as the freep puts out such a terrible article suggesting completely unfounded claims, he'll have to consider it."
Nothing but speculation framed like it is actually Morris' train of thought. A terrible fucking article, I would curse out Snyder if I saw him in person.
It's obvious, really, and that was one BIG Freudian slip. He's gonna jump ship tp Izzo, since thats what any sane Free Press reader would do.
This to me reads like an opinion article from Snyder, so I think this is a bad thread title.
So with my feelings that this was an opinion article by our good friend Snoops, why even write it Mr. Snyder? Darius has not given any indications as of yet that he is even going to explore is options. Quit trying to stir the pot.
Agreed, Douche. Change the title.
Mindless speculation? Opposite what the player said himself? Crappy reporting? PANIC!!!
Although, PS, Donovan Warren said he was coming back right after the OSU game as well...
I agree that Darius stating that he was coming back for sure in the heat of the moment after a heartbreaking loss was probably a little early to pencil him in to the starting lineup next year for sure.
However, until Darius himself says that he will explore his position in the draft, this article does not need to be written. It was written to stir the pot, and create web hits. They got what they wanted.
The freep publishing a story with no facts in order to create a controversy where there otherwise is none? Who'd a thunk it? Until Darius says or does something that remotely looks like he's leaving, I'm assuming he's staying. I will not buy into Snyder's b.s. and negativity. So far as I can tell Morris is not Harris, and Harris left after his junior year. But yeah Mark, one guy left so the other guy must be leaving too. Must be fun to see fire where there isn't even smoke. Clearly all Snyder did was make an overarching generalization without taking Morris' particular traits into account. Really, this is just terrible journalism.
Oh how I love the media. Don't have a story, no problem, invent one.
Nothing to see here at the moment - this is just Snyder being Snyder. Darius hasn't said anything to substantiate the assertion that he is contemplating bolting for the NBA - in fact just the opposite is true. Is it possible that he may end up testing the waters? Sure. However, until Darius says something that contradicts his original statement, this is just Snyder attempting to generate controversy/discussion while at the same time creating uneasiness in a fan base.
You're reinforcing the message that this is what people want.
Which is why links to freep should be banned on this site...
no revenue; no problem
AnnArbor.com fired a bunch of content contributors this month. An explicit reason given was insufficient clicks on some topics. Print links still count for eyeballs if not direct revenue from ad views.
I would not be surprised if some of the MGoBoard members exist solely to link articles on other sites.
No wonder you're a member of Team Douche.
Nice fucking title, OP.
When asked, to a man, the MSU football team claimed that they "Have not committed first degree murder at any point."
Can we REALLY be sure? We can't, can we?
Please change the title, luckily I saw the story first so I knew that you were full of shit to begin with....but for others this could cause a problem. It says nothing of the sort. It basically says that analysts saying he could be a high draft pick could cause him to look at his options.
"Bear Not a Sure Thing to Shit in the Woods": The bear could not be reached for comment, so we can only be left to speculate. Certainly, most bears shit in the woods, but that is not always the case. And we can't forget the Goldilocks incident a few years back, which indicates that when it comes to bears, anything is possible. We can only sit back and wait.
"Government Hasn't Confirm that Japanese Quake Wasn't Caused by Aliens": We know that earthquakes can occur without aliens... at least we think so. And when we asked the government about it, they simply laughed and said "you are a dumbass. Go away." But what else could they say? If the answer was "yes," they would obviously have to say "no." So it's tough not to read too much into it when they say no. And I, for one, would welcome our new earth-controlling alien overlords.
"Is Mountain Dew Made out of People?": Soylent Green has proven that if you are green food products raise red flags. Mountain Dew does list its "ingredients" on the side of the bottle, none of which is "people." But the fourth listed ingredient is "natural flavors," which could easily be code for people. Moreover, my research* turned up no one who could tell me what Sodium Benzoate or Phenylalnine are. So until we get the Wonka tour of the Mountain Dew factory, I suggest we all drink with caution.
*I asked Rosenberg and Sharp. Neither knew.
I can't comment on your first two points, but I drink a LOT of Mountain Dew (the Diet version) and I am, in fact, a person.........and natural. You may be on to something.
Voting needs to come back. Both good and bad. Your post was great.
Her/his name, after all, is Team Douche.
The article itself is a kind of concern trolling, from a paper that seems to have decided that's the only way to elicit reads.
And I think that works, for a while, anyway. For a long time I'd go and try to puzzle over a Drew Sharp, work to understand his motives, argue with him in my head. You weary of that, though, and resentment builds. Suddenly you've brightened up enough not to bother.
Saddens me because as a kid my family had all kinds of reasons why they hated the News and loved the Freep. . .
Morris saying he's definitely coming back
+ Chad Ford saying he hopes he stays he could be a lottery pick next year
+He's projected as a second rounder this year
= HE'S NOT SURE IF HE'S STAYING?
"I'm definitely coming back"
"Yea, but you can't be sure, right?"
"No. I just said I am DEFINITELY coming back."
That article was just dumb. When he says point blank he's coming back, he's probably going to come back. Unlike Manny Harris, I think Darius actually likes school and wants to be here. I'm more worried about him coming back for his senior year.
Don't you listen to Doug Gottlieb? We can't be judging people by what they say or judging teams by results.
The freep and Snyder can go hang themselves by their balls. They suck, sad excuse for journalism
Again, don't link to their stories!
he justifies crap journalism by saying it's his opinion?
Only the freep would print opinions as facts.
His signature was the purpose of the shamelessly written article to begin with.
He wanted everyone to head on over in a panic and read.
Nice play Snoops. Nice play.
Synder returned one of my emails one time as well. I told him he sucked and should quit his job, and he replied "thanks, I'll get right on that !! go sparty !! ms"
did you expect him to say " yeah I suck worse than a Hoover " ? You shoulda been more congenial.Like " Sir, I would like to explain to you the difference between your gluteals and a hole in the wall for surely you know not "
They should have kept that headline. They could make a very good case for that...
Professional reporting 101 right there
I mean, who knows if that game in East Lansing will get canceled, or something. Breslin could get Metrodome'd.
Trolls trolling trolls trolling trolls trolling trolls
Isn't there a rule of some sort that forbids the posting of Freep articles as a legitimate source? I could've sworn that there was... If not, then we should make it a rule.
A number of years ago there would not even be a thought of a kid like Morris going pro at this point in his career. He is no where near being ready to contribute at the NBA level, he needs to develop a jump shot and be able to go to his left. Not only are the guys leaving early ruining pro basketball, they are also ruining the college game.
A rite of spring: college basketball fans badmouthing their own players' skills (usually followed by rival fans explaining that no, Player X actually does have NBA game).
It is called being realistic and old enough to remember that there was a time when you had to be really good to be a first round pick in the NBA. Morris made tremendous improvement, but did you see where he can consistently make a jump shot? Did you see where he can go to his left? Oh! that is right, you can worry about developing those in the NBA these days.
Point is that I can not believe that this subject is really even an issue. Than again with the state of basketball these days, maybe I can.
I'm just asking questions, man...
I know this is a little random for this post, but I need help! When is signing day for CBB recruits?? I know CFB is obviously huge and I know the season is basically Feb. to Feb., but what about CBB?
Do we know of any other recruits, aside from our current verbals, who may be coming??
Hey, I just heard Webber might be coming back because he still has two years of eligibilty left. Thanks Freep.
Gentlemen, send him to Bolivia!!!!
Bad thread posts.
I refuse to read an article that originally referred to Morris as playing for MSU. Good grief.
It would be one thing if an article referring to Morris as a "Michigan State" player came from some hack at ESPN but this idiot (Snyder) actually covers UM.
Also, if you read the "article" closely it never quotes Morris as saying anything other than that he is returning. It is all speculation by the "author" based on a tweet he saw from an ESPN analyst saying Morris would be much better off staying.
Nothing more than an attempt to generate web traffic. I guess it worked. Pathetic.
And then we get a post here titled "Morris not sure he's returning to UM". Wonderful.
Clearly the article is speculation, and Snyder's opinion is written to look like fact. But, he is sort of right, I'm not going to bank on Morris being back until he either chooses not to submit his name for evaluation, or pulls his name back out of the draft.
The facts are that he has true NBA potential at PG (size, quickness, ball handling, etc.). He also has a lot he needs to work on. I think he'll be smart enough to see the difference one more year can make, but plenty of players have chosen the opposite path. I won't be completely comfortable until we're certain he'll be wearing a Michigan uniform next year.
I see yellow journalism is alive and well in the 21st century.
It never went away, and it never will. That's where the Internet, and you and me, come into the picture. I can happily hate on Drew Sharp all day if occasion demands it.
"I'm definitely not reading any more of your articles."
Which means I'm not going to read any more of your articles. Now you can write an opinion piece, where my future boss says I shouldn't read anymore of your articles for another year.
Which would mean I'm definitely reading your artilces in your opinion immediately.
I then lead you to my original statement: "I'm not reading any more of your articles."
To be fair, players have said they are definitely coming back and not. Warren was the most recent example. But this article is no new infomation, it's just pure speculation and presented as an opinion on a factual topic.
Here's things you can have opinions on, things that don't have a right or wrong answer. Coach X is the best in the Big Ten. The 97 defense was the best ever.
Things you can't have an opinion on and print, things that will be eventually be facts. IE Morris staying or going. Especially when your the beat reporter for that team. How is a reader to distinquish whats a fact and and whats an opinion? You could have had a opinion on whether its a good idea for Morris to stay or go, but not whether he will or not, because your opinion is useless and you combine it with a misleading headline and bam instant web hits.
By the way your last statement, "Until then, even Morris can't be certain himself." is complete garbage. Do you have minding reading capabilities? You don't even know if he's putting his name in for consideration to get a draft grade. Maybe Morris really values his LS&A education, you know the same one you obtained. How can you speak to the certainties of someone else? If you do have mind reading capabilites I would like to know what Tressell is thinking.
Thanks for reading.
Look, anything could happen...but Morris gave as strong a statement about coming back as he could. Snyder is an idiot.
Oh, calm down. Every time somebody writes a word that conflicts with the interests of M, it's like listening to a bunch of clucking hens.
Players commonly check their NBA status. Morris would be a fool not to at least gauge interest. Why not use any barometers available to you? I'm sure it's common knowledge that he will do this. Doesn't mean he has any plan to leave. Chill out.
No one's saying he won't listen to draft projections and such as the season has ended. But what Snyder's doing is just absurd conjecture that has no basis. If Morris loads up draftexpress.com, should this ultimately be a news story? Snyder's a reporter who is not actually reporting anything. That's the problem.
I'd listen to someone to see if I could make a lot of money now too. Ultimately his outside game needs a lot of work and this is a great system to improve that.
Before anyone says Rajon Rondo, he is definitely the exception and is in a perfect situation as far as his supporting cast. Morris adds a 10-15 foot pull up jumper and nothing else, he'll become damn near unstoppable. He can easily do that with another developmental year here.
Mark Snyder doesn't read good
Snyder will write anything in that paper to make him feel better about being a State fan. This includes making up stories, and telling himself Morris is playing for MSU and not UM.
Wait, Morris didn't tell THJ to get the fuck off his court after he led state to victory at Breslin?
Given the understandable outrage against Rosenberg on this blog and elsewhere (I'm looking at you, John U. Bacon - with great admiration), I've always been a bit surprised that Snyder has gotten a relatively free ride on the Stretchgate fiasco. IIRC, he co-wrote every bit of that series. Just because Rosenberg got first billing doesn't mean that Snyder isn't just as guilty of crap journalism.
So it's good to see some ire against Snyder, who I viewed as Rosenberg's Mini-Me throughout the Stretchgate "investigative" pieces.
In conclusion, screw Rosenberg, Snyder, and the horses upon which they rode.
But it was always my impression that the idea for the story was Rosenberg's. It was always my thinking/suspicion that the July '09 limited-distirbution CARA memo was leaked to Rosenberg, and that Rosenberg proceeded to interview Mallett, Mallett's mom, Boren, Boren's dad, Wermers, Wermers' teddy bear, and various and sundry other unnamed sources who could not possibly be named "because they feared retribution from coaches..." (Now stop laughing!)
And at the same time, I presumed that Snyder's personal contribution to the story was the malicious sandbagging interviews done with Stokes and Hawthorne under the pretense of Media Day in August of 2009.
It might be otherwise; it might be that Snyder got his hands on the July memo and ran to Rosenberg with it. I do think that Rosenberg was the heavy-weight behind the story in any event.
The only way to know, would be to get Rosenberg and Snyder themselves to talk about their reporting, and of course neither one is talking about it anymore. Little wonder. Maybe (please, God) they'll be forced to explain themselves if and when John U. Bacon's fall-release book holds the two of them up to the light.
But Snyder has enough to answer for on his own. My still-favorite Mark Snyder reporting was the 2009 Football Bust, where Snyder wrote the "Katrina reference" story, which was later deconstructed by Snyder's new colleague, Dave Birkett. (Snyder's story about Rich Rodriguez comparing the team's fortunes to the recovery from Hurricane Katrina was a complete hatchet job that overlooked or ignored the fact that Regent Kathleen White had just finished her own greeting speech to the Bust audience, with a rambling 10 minute reference to Hurrican Katrina, and Coach Rodriguez had simply nodded to Regent White and, off the cuff, said that he knew New Orleans very well from having coached at Tulane and that the people down there were a resilient group, like his football team. The Snyder Freep story, which falsely implied that Rodriguez had compared the season to "Katrina" raced across the internet and got linked to hundreds of other sites. It has been wondered whether Snyder even saw the part of the program where Regent White spoke, or if he was in the hallway outside the banquest room, trolling for interviews. And this was the story that caused the MGoBlue.com webmasters to go in to work on a Sunday afternoon, and post the full video-recorded remarks of Regent White and Coach Rodriguez on the Athletic Department video pages, given the national backlash prompted by Snyder's ridiculous reporting.)
So yeah, Mark Snyder is a dishonest twerp, just like Rosenberg. The nice thing is that he reads MGoBlog, so he'll see this, and all of the other posts. Have a nice day, Mark.
One proverb I live by is, "He who controls your information controls you." Snyder is a dolt, and I agree 100% with the main gist of your post. The more he relies on MGoBlog for hot tips, the more relevance we have as a fully mature journalistic entity. When even reporters are reading blogs for ideas, it might be all over.
It's Regent Katherine White, not "Kathleen." My apologies for the error.
I sort of knew at the time I typed it, that it was wrong. But as you can see, I was on a roll. I meant to go back and edit it.
motherfuckers get their asses canned
When I contacted the Free-Press they said all the right things. That Snyder is still employed at the Freep, and that his opposable thumbs and ability to use Word are valuable to the paper. But that is all they could say on the record. The fact remains that sometimes bad writers are fired. Accepting this as a fact, I conclude that the Freep could fire Snyder. And thus, Snyder can't really be sure he won't be fired. Although my opinion is that, as of this moment, the Freep truly doesn't plan to fire Snyder. However, my opinion is also that that could change.
[Ready to publish in a newspaper -- I'm headed home for the day]
Well played sir...
All of their stories are made up too.
Investigating his draft status will result in him finding out that he's a good prospect as a big strong point guard, but badly needs to return to school to work on his left hand and his jump shot. And he will come back to school.
Who gave Snyder access to a computer with Microsoft Office on it? Who allowed him to send his musings to an offset printer for general release? Names, we need names!
As everyone else said, this is complete BS. In addition to every other point raised so far, I remember hearing in a BTN broadcast of a Michigan game one time that Morris wanted to be an AD one day, and I'm pretty sure that requires a college degree...
