Morris Elite 11 Dallas update (not whole lot of info)

Submitted by brendandavis22 on

Not much but rivals has a paywalled write up which ranks Shane 5th for the day.  It basically says he had the best velocity of anybody there but his accuracy was a little off.  Also makes mention of the fact he was rocking Michigan gear!

for this kid to get on campus.  With Gardner toying with the WR position, it appears as though Michigan may be moving towards a pro-style a year earlier than we expected.

I think you have to win the competition to get invited. I know there are more regionals, but you would like to see the number 2 qb in the nation do better. Im just in a cranky mood this week though so forgive my pessimism.

In 2004, Chad Henne was the #3 (Rivals) and #4 (Scout) HS QB behind Rhett Bomar, Anthony Morelli, and Xavier Lee (Scout only). Looking back, I'm very glad Michigan landed the 3rd/4th best HS QB.

Also in that same year, Calvin Johnson was ranked "only" the #6 (Rivals) HS WR.

What I'm trying to say is this: Shane will be just fine.

I'd rather have people telling him the things he needs to work on rather than just telling him how awesome he is all the time.  The truth is, EVERY high school QB has stuff they need to work on in order to be good in college.  You can teach stuff like footwork, taking stuff off the ball, reading the defense, etc.  But much like speed, you can't teach raw arm strength.

Yeah, if I had to pick one thing, I'd take accuracy over arm strength any day.  But Morris is still super young.  He has a lot fo time to learn all this stuff.  The fact that he already has a cannon for an arm just means that if he gets the other stuff to click, he'll be awesome.

says he has one of the best arms he's seen in the last several years, and that there's no question about his talent. Needs to improve footwork, consistency, and accuracy. He's only using the one speed right now, and that's the fastball. Has to incorporate different speeds and more touch.

I saw a lot of touch throws and very accurate balls on his film, so it's a little surprising (of course they are by definition highlights). Maybe Shane gets in these environments and really wants to show he's got the strongest arm, starts really zinging every throw. But what the hell do I know

It sounded to me like Luginbill likes Morris and his talent, just noting some work he needs.

Thanks for posting the vids.  Shane has a Gustav Gun for a left arm...very powerful and you can see it in those videos.

IMO it is a very good thing that Shane is getting his ups and downs now, and even this little bit of national neg pub may be a good thing... kid is very competitive and will work on those accuracy and touch parts of his games.

Better to get bashed just a bit now...and learn from it, than come in all hype and roses and expectactations eat the kid up at Michigan.
