Those jerseys are for the game against Miami right?
Morning Open Thread: Notre Dame vs Navy
Oct 6th is the date the date the jerseys will be worn, Vs Miami.
Woke up so pumped go blue
Yes but a 9am kickoff gives us a reason to drink and watch football from sunrise to well after sunset.
ireland sure loves football
Funny, I was there in december; the only american fb reference I saw was a kid in dublin with a USC hoodie on, and a guy in Killarney that recognized my M beanie and said, "ahh, I know that M. The Wooooolverrrrrrrrrines, innit?"
Yet nary a single piece of ND paraphernalia.
Anyone know of a broadcast I can pick up the game? Particularly on my phone?
Probably should've googled before asking. Options are abundant.
Notre Dame, like many colleges, faced severe financial difficulties during World War II. The US Navy made Notre Dame a training center and paid enough for usage of the facilities to keep the University afloat. Notre Dame has since extended an open invitation for Navy to play the Fighting Irish in football and considers the game annual repayment on a debt of honor." Basically navy's stadium is too small for the game so they move locations every year. Part of what makes college better than pro, to me.
ND was all male at that point, it's hard to belive they even stayed open.
Now I have to hate Notre Dame just a little bit less. :-/
thanks for the tidbit. It's another little factoid that shows why college is so much better than pro. The teams histories are just so much more intertwined.
I really don't care that they are playing in Ireland unless they are sending recruits over with them. I like live football almost 24 hrs per day. Why would we care about the west coast? They get to see the Hawaii home games at a reasonable hour.
So I guess you care.
I'm a hockey player from Canada, so I'm not sure of some of the intricacies of defending the triple option. Hoke has stated that the first thing would be to hit the dive man (FB). What are the rules regarding tackling of a player without the ball? A ball fake to the FB is meant to trick the defence into thinking he has the ball, can they tackle him? Same quetion applies to play-action fakes by the QB. If he hands it off and then pretends to still have the ball, is he live?
but it was turning into the rule book. The answers to your questions are "not many", "yes", and "yes". The defense can more or less tackle anybody in the neutral zone or behind the line of scrimmage. The only limits are the aggression penalties - unsportsmanlike conduct, roughing the passer, after the play, etc. There are some special considerations for the defense engaging receivers but they only apply past the line of scrimmage. The check and balance here is that if defensive players waste their time tackling guys other than the ball carrier, they won't be defensive players for long.
I wish Navy would have played this one in Belfast, so Notre Dame could see what a real road game is like.
Hardly recognized you with that avatar.
I'm just glad we're not embarrassing our country by ND wearing those uniforms in front of the real Irish.
Football at 9 a.m.? This is like some sort of dream come true. Go Navy!
that US Navy is the home team in Ireland against the Fighting Irish?
Yeah I don't really get that one.
Navy set this game up. Believe me I would like to pass on stupid things like this. The next one up for discussion is Stanford in China. Ugh.
I'm all for a morning football game, that way I don't have to watch gameday!
So who out there is drinking? If so, what? Sadly, no drinking until tonight for me. Then it's New Belgium.
I probably shouldn't be drinking right now, but eh fuck it.
on the first Saturday of football in 2012... @ 6am /yawn
there should always be football on at 9am.
On the other hand...this new CBS Sports overlay displeases me. I like the previous one.
chic-fil-a line ups: NO POLITICS
oh lord, the golic kid is starting at guard. that OL must suck
It's 6am and I'm up watching football. If ND goes up big I'm going back to bed until 9.
Looks like ND is going to lean on the run game as well.
Best poster seen so far, "Civil War Champs".
What is with this weird standing up defensive formation, did the Navy DTs miss the flight over?
Does a good job. I miss him doing B1G games.
His sycophancy is nauseating.
I'll probably switch over to Gameday at ten. Thoughts?
Switch back and forth depending on how close this game is.
Nice sack by Navy. Don't really see how Navy is going to be able to stop ND's running game though.
You'll get yourself killed, young man.
Lot of underneath stuff so far which makes sense. Riddick doing a good job yac.
And running of course.
RR could be 0-2 against, toledo after tonight.
obviously not thinking of brunette girls..
the ND QB looks pretty good for a true frosh
He's a redshirt and supposedly the ideal QB for Kelly's offense. Most ND fans have been waiting for Kelly to just go with Golson and dump Rees since Golson arrived last fall.
That's pretty cool that the Prime Minister is there.
for being "sold out".
Sometimes, and this is only from personal experience, Irish people get real drunk and end up not doing what they had planned on doing.
reminds me of one the recent olympic stadiums or something
The Notre Dame helmets look better. They were starting to look like Werther's Candies the past few seasons
4 down territory for Navy.
Edit: meant to say good decision but didn't work out. Live and learn.
Why didn't they just freaking sneak that? No one was over the center?
Great play by Teo to blow that up.
I was on espn checking today's schedule and saw this tweet on the side bar:
Touchdown! #Irish are back!
The Irish, back since 1989!
Yep, Mark's a smart guy.
I really hope he was being sarcastic
This is looking like a 49-0 type game.
That'll be terrible jet lag
That xp went in but he hooked it pretty bad too. Not a lot of field goals for ND this year I'd guess.
... where are all the Juggalos?
Navy's passing game has actually looked good.
ND's secondary has looked quite bad.
Notre Dame's secondary looks suspect. Navy should not be getting guys that open on you.
Maybe Navy takes a page from our book and turns it on late? Just want one result today all others are tertiary.
Shows we're way outnumbered in Arlington.
But at least I'm getting a Cassidy Hubbarth fix.
I'm watching Gameday on the U-
it's the 1st week and they are recycling old pieces from last year (re: the Ole Miss Tailgate). WTF.
Also, as a white guy in 'Murica trying to imagine being a black guy in 'Murica, everything about Ole Miss makes me very unconfortable.
of 1960. It's like saying everything about Germany makes you uncomfortable because of Germany's dark past.
We cannot forget the past, but we shouldn't permit to color the present either.
And like Germany's reunification, I haven't really like the work they've done together in the past; I wasn't really looking forward to the reunion tour.
except for the rebel flag flying everywhere.
This is an extreme mismatch.
Can we get more Feherty?
Notre Dame needs more shine on their helmets. Somebody go grab some turtle wax.
I hear they are getting new pants that more closely match the helmets.
that injury doesn't look good.
This one could get out of hand. Then again, I said the last thing last night after the first two drives of the Boise game...
Time to get a little Des in my life.
Seems to be clearly out of bounds but there was some jersey grabbing also.
WHY would you put that tint of gold next to the white sideline. He clearly was out but that's hard to see.
That was out of bounds by a good foot. Maybe we need at least one announcer who has decent vision.
And of course they run the same play for a TD.
I'm thinking overtime..
Looking like Mr. Rourke.
Am I the only one that is incredibly disappointed in ESPN for continuing to use that country song for Gameday? Besides the fact that country music does absolutely nothing for me, they have used the same song for years now. I miss the days when there was a new chorus every week depending on the big game.
Hoke's voice is gone...what was he doing last night?
I don't know, but if you watch the Countdown to Kickoff from yesterday, he sounded a bit under the weather to me.
Hoke sounds sick.
Get coach some tea with honey!
Doing us proud and showing what Michigan is all about. Though I miss how much Erin Andrews loved Hoke.
Oh, and fuck Chris Fowler.
I like Fowler. I'm sure you have your reasons, but I think he's a good host.
After talking to Hoke he was all like "I don't know that Hoke should be getting any credit; DUI is serious." But you can bet the next game he covers where some program is playing guys who did something wrong, or a dirty program, you won't hear a peep from him. He's a hypocrite and a coward.
But that's what all of us said once Fitz got the DUI. We all said "This is a no-brainer: he should be suspended", and that's what writers in general stated. Now, if an ND guy did the same and Kelly doesn't suspend him for the first game, it may be true that Fowler doesn't say anything, but I think he may make one of his common sarcastic replies making fun of that program.
Texas A&M had a suspension, but cherry-picked the game. (Hint: It was not the Florida game.)
This kind of token crap happens all the time. Hoke really does deserve credit.
Because it's a no-brainier at Michigan. But it's not hardly true of college football.
I didn't see him saying after the Urban Meyer is a Family Man segment "well, yeah, he shouldn't go back on his word to his family...like he was a month after quitting." Or see him chiming in on "yeah, Saban has all that depth replacing his stars...because he signs more than anyone else." If he's going to be a blind cheerleader or the voice of reason, he should at least be consistent. It was unnecessary.
Check out Desmond on Gameday. Did he fight a Balrog or something?
Lol, only on mgoblog
Shot at sparty!
It was a slight shot at sparty by Fowler, talking about Saban's record at staee against Michigan and saying something to the sort of "But he didn't have Alabama's players when he was there".
Every offseason I forget how much I love Desmond. He is awesome.
He must be a Marine.
The domer's radio broadcast is insufferable. Criqui is almost as annoying as Blaha.
Criqui did the Patriots preseason games. It was so terrible. He did not know what was going on half the time.
All Criqui references demand this clip to be played:
Dumb play by Navy
Take a look at that. Forward motion.
Edit: Never mind.
These early season creampuff games, I don't really know what to take from them, but the ND offense looks pretty good.
Navy is so overmatched up front that it isn't necessary for ND to even throw the ball. ND is doing what they are supposed to do.
Does it seem like teams are putting the ball somewhere between the 5 and the 1 on kickoffs? We may get to see Norfleet in action tonight after all. Brian should be especially pleased.
ND's CBs are terrible. As long as our o-line holds up we should be fine against them.
Bad coverage by Irish secondary and a pass that should have been picked off.
Their DL doesn't seem to generate much of a rush either.
That guy is having some fun!!!!
weren't so damned modest. (Old guy rumblings.)
It is the same Bird Call guy from the US Open.
I love this guy!
the irish jig....nice job danielson having them show that. I will now respect you until the first sec game you do today.
I love when Brian Kelly gets pissed and looks like an exploding tomato.
I like hearing the crowd get noisy when Navy makes it 2nd and 15.
This is either the best ND team in a while or the worst Navy team in a while. Thoughts?
ND has a good OLine.
Navy has an undersized front 7..
ND's secondary looks suspect and their D-coordinator knows it; lots of soft zone.
The ND D-line without Lynch doesn't look all that good.
Michigan's D-line needs to draw against the ND O-line.
Denard and Fitz will be running wild against the ND defense.
If Michigan has any semblance of a passing game, maybe a long day for the Irish.
Running wild? They held Navy to 100 yards rushing.
I have more confidence in the Michigan offensive line opening up holes for Denard and Fitz, than I did Navy's smaller, less talented offensive line opening up holes for a slower option QB, and smaller, slower RBs.
No disrespect to the Middies (I live 20 miles away from Annapolis) but they aren't on the same level as the Michigan football team.
They also run, thats about all they do. Holding a triple option team to 100 yards rushing is incredible.
Considering what's happened the last few times you've played Navy, it is incredible. For the rest of us, shutting down a service academy isn't something to brag about
Well since an inferior service academy is coming your way shortly, I guess we'll just see. Besides whos bragging? Your friend noted that Fitz and Denard were going to run all over us. I was debating his logic. But I get the Trolling moderation.
Using my double post to update -- haven't seen much of the game but it look like Navy is getting taken to the woodshed
Meh. I think I'm going to turn this game off. But I would first like to say fuck Brian Kelly and fuck Notre Dame.
I'm sure as soon as this game is over, Lou Holtz will say ND is officially national title contenders.
I really feel bad for that kid who just got Feherty'd.
Denard Robinson's in the house!
Tripping over to Ireland is a huge expense, and ND brought their band. Anyone know what the team payout is for this game?
Not sure the exact numbers, but Navy was hoping to break even and ND was looking to make a decent amount of money. Navy was the home team.
Not sure how much money one expects to make when shipping over 20K pounds of material over for the game.
