Morgan Trent 1st Team Defense for Bengals

Submitted by Marley Nowell on

Did anyone else see the pre-season game between the Bengals and Jets?  Trent was starting CB opposite Leon Hall.  He made some nice plays, particularly one on the sideline where there was a high throw and he made sure to scrap the ball out of the WR's hands.  Overall though the other takeaway I had was they had no idea how to read play-action and the safetys/linebackers bit everytime.

Sounds like GERG is coaching the Bengals D

In all seriousness, good for Trent. Not my favorite player at U of M (multiple TV remotes fell victim via his tackling abilities), but I will always root for any former player to be successful.

Quit on his coach and team?  I'm pretty sure he was there to the grim finish of the 2008 season.  Furthermore, RR continued to start him to the end.  Are you suggesting that RR was starting the wrong guy at corner?

Yeah, he criticized RR later on.  So have many other ex-Michigan players (including the guy in your avatar).  Instead of blacklisting dozens of ex-players, maybe we should accept that RR wasn't a great fit here and move on.

There just aren't any favorites. They're all fantastic.

And closing with a personal favorite on the tackling technique side of things:

Great choice Cincy.

I am confused by your post. The first 2 obviously are taking shots at Morgan Trent and how you think he was always out of postion, but the 3rd pick is him with the ball, so he either made a play, or was returning a kick, but I fail to see how that one matches the intention of the first 2 pics. And the last one, while not great technique, he does still appear to be actually making the tackle, so are you trying to trash him or show that he had flashes of brilliance or something? Please elaborate.

Ah, I love visiting MgoBlog and seeing everyone trash former Michigan players. That's what it's all about, isn't it.

In all seriousness, good for Trent.

There are children dying in Africa and yet a little internet bad-mouthing of an overpaid professional athlete who wasn't that good on the field here and has been catty toward the program off it is what "sickens" you.

You know what sickens me? The idolatry from so many on this board who demand that all former University of Michigan football players be treated like they are war heroes.

There are children dying in Africa and yet asking for a little respect for our former players on an Internet message board, despite the fact that they may have had deficiencies in their game "sickens" you?

You know what sickens me? The fact that there are children dying in Africa.

Just because you can find something that is far worse it doesn't justify the action at hand.  I understand that there are humanitarian crises across the globe that demand our attention and empathy.  However, the purpose of this board is for UM football fans to come together and talk about their team.  The overwhelming majority of these fans try to support student athletes in all of their endeavors, understanding that they are just kids trying to play the game they love and get a college degree.  For us to sit back and bash these young men that we don't know except through a couple of football games is in fact sickening.

Are there far worse things going on in the world than young men being criticized and hated on, absolutely.  Does that make it ok, not so much.

1) Morgan Trent is no longer "just a kid trying to play the game he loves." He gets paid to do it, which in a lot of peoples' mind makes him fair game.

2) Morgan Trent is always going to be somewhat of a dirty word to a certain segment and he did that to himself, speaking nothing of poor play. HE made the consciouss decision to use his position to kick the program while it was down. It wasn't appreciated nor was it respected. Some things supersede playing football for your school unless you consider such an act to be the most noble thing a man can do.

I logged in with the sole intent to neg the worthless piece of shit BRCE who reminds me that we have some major douchebags that call themselves "fans" of our great program and great players.

God Bless Morgan Trent.  Really pumped up that he is making a career for himself on Sundays.

Morgan is now a proven NFL corner.  What does that say for Rich Rod and Tony Gibson and the rest of that staff and their schemes?  not much.

You douchebags wanna blame someone for Morgans inconsistancy at Michigan....blame your boy Rich Rod and his lackey Tony Gibson who were both hired by an incompetant AD Bill Martin.

get over it before you have an anuerysm. I think it is well documented that RR had nothing to do with the defense (which I know a lot of people had a problem with, but it is stil a fact) so blaming MT's shortcomings in the college game can't be placed at his feet. Honestly, do you want to blame the world hunger that was talked about previously on him too? Give it a rest already, he is LONG gone.

how's about that type of vitriol go where it belongs - which is anywhere but this board.

It's simple - every kid who puts in the incredible effort and dedication that it takes to represent the University of Michigan football program deserves our respect. Period.

Good luck, Morgan.

I wasn't following this blog nearly as much during MT's time here as I do now so what I am about to say are things I have come to know since he was gone. I think the problem most had with MT was that he didn't show incredible effort and dedcication to the team while he was here (again, I wasn't following enough to agree or disagree with that sentiment, just passing along what I have seen since).

I believe he also had a lot to say about the program (not much of it good) after he left for the NFL. What I am trying to say is that I am not sure that people who are being critical of MT are disagreeing with you either, they just feel MT doesn't fit your description.

I should also say that I remember other posters (I remember Magnus specifically) sticking up for MT, so I can't say which side is right or wrong, just thought I would mention that these posters don't necessarily disagree that players who put forth incredible effort and dedication deserve support.

Anyway, good luck Trent.

Honest question and I'm not trying to be sarcastic. Do you believe that this incredible effort and dedication justifies most ensuing actions, such as using your status as a public figure to take shots in the media at that very same program during a vulnerable time?

Because I don't think it does. Agree to disgree

And I think the fact that some resent Braylon for the same thing show that how good of a player you were when here has little to do with it.

But watching the Jets - Bengals, it was much easier to notice Plax rather then Leon Hall or Morgan Trent, and remember a game where we were torched. It also is a reminder of what a fast and tall WR can do . . . 6 inches on a DB is a huge advantage.

won again in pre-season!  Doesn't that scream loud and clear the relevance of pre-season form???
Why argue about who's starting a second week pre-season game?  Especially either of the Ohio NFL teams (one could argue I should have put quotation marks around NFL Teams, but I digress).  As Stephen Kass prompted, starting a pre-season game for the Bengals isn't as awesome as might have been originally thought...

I never was really a fan of Trent, but I always like to see former players making an impact in the NFL. Hell, there were people who didn't like Brady when he was at Michigan but let's not open that can of worms.

Trent was always a very good athlete.  That's probably one thing the NFL saw in him.  But, originally when he came in here he was a receiver.  (I don't know if he played much DB in H.S. or not)  Yes, he did get torched frequently on long pass plays at Michigan, but I never figured out whether it was because he just didn't get pass coverage or bad coaching or what.  Whatever, but I'm happy that he's doing a lot better and hope he represents Michigan well in the NFL.
