More trouble for Stonum

After 2 DUIs and isn't this 3 driving without a license?  It better be.

Dumb move, but the kid was trying to get to the probation office to check in at 7am. Kinda hard to find a ride.

I was afraid he did something dumb while down in N.O., this is still dumb...but I think if he's been perfect, the court may not worry about it.

We'll know tomorrow when he goes for his scheduled hearing.

as much as I appreciate Hoke giving the kid a second chance...he just doesn't seem to want to walk the straight and narrow. I think its time to move on from Darryl and that's too bad. He had the world at his finger tips and he just let it slip away by being irresponsible. 

I do not see how they can allow him back on the team. I think it is time to part ways. We could really have used Stonum for next year, but how dumb can you be. He is driving to his probation officer meeting on a suspended license and then lies to his probation officer saying he was dropped off. If I was him, I would not do anything remotely illegal so that I could get back on the team. He has no one to blame for this but himself.

Unfortunately this is likely his last draw.  Too bad, I thought he would step in well and decrease the loss of Hemingway.

ARRRRGH. Why the hell does he keep driving cars? Also, why is he so bad at driving cars that he keeps getting pulled over while driving them? Can someone else not drive him? GET THIS MAN A GODDAMNED BIKE.

In 5 years in Ann Arbor, I was pulled over 0 times. I don't even like driving, but if I did, I'd still attempt to not get pulled over. What is so tough about driving (or not driving) for this guy?

See what Hoke does. Not the smartest move on Stonum's part. Not necessarily very bad by itself, but compounded with his past...

Until we know the circumstances as to why he did this, I wish everyone would reserve their comments.

how people can say this is not a big deal. In and of itself maybe not. The fact is Stonum has been busted twice for drinking and driving. He license was suspended and he got 2 years of probation. He was booted off the team and allowed to potentially earn his way back by doing what Hoke asks of him and playing on the practice squad. i think Michigan went out on a limb to not just cut ties with him already and this is how he repays them. He is a U of M football player. He has to know that anything he does will be visible and in the press. This makes the University look bad, that a player already on probation breaks the law, as driving on a suspended license is against the law. Then he lies to the probation officer when asked how he got to the meeting. This is just plain stupid. He should know better. Therefore to me, in this instance this is a very big deal.

If he doesn't get the AXE from Hoke who's to say that he won't do something more stupid next month? At this point, the odds of him playing the entire 2012 season are slim.

UM needs a WR upgrade ASAP. Not enough speed or playmakers there with Hemmingway gone. We basically have middle tier Big Ten WRs on the depth chart right now.

Hopefully one of the underclassmen really steps up. Roundtree is pretty nullfied in the new O and Gallon hasn't shown that he can be a #1 type yet.

This is what Coach Hoke means when he preaches being accountable to eachother.  This was a selfish act that hurts the team.  I can't stand liars either.  He's gone....period.  I also hope he eventually learns a lesson before he damages other and himself.

after the last DUI.  Hoke had a chance to really set the tone and show that he takes these issues seriously.  Instead he gave a third (fourth?  I've lost count) chance and look what happens.  I called Hoke's unwillingness to cut Stonum after his second DUI and third alcohol related offense his first major mistake at UM and I stand by that assessment.  I thought we were better than this.

JESUS, kid.  

I am sure it is hard as hell to give up driving for 365 days, and I truly sympathize.  It surely sucks.  But that's the medicine you were handed, and it was a lieu of jail time, so it was something to be grateful for.  And to be adhered to.  It's a small violation in the scheme of things, but the obvious edict is DON'T VIOLATE IT AT ALL.

I liked this kid and I've missed his personality (and ability!) all year.  But if Hoke has to cut him loose I will understand.  It is just tragic if he ends up blowing his college football career on stupid-ass decisions like not grabbing a cab to court.  ARGH.

I just talked to a buddy about this the other day and how he was doing good.  COME ON MAN

you would sure think that somebody on the team would have given him a ride. One of the 1st things that Hoke said is he wants them to be accountable for each other. Sad that this had to happen.

Sad and it will definitely hurt us next year, but probably time to move on.

It isn't just driving with a revoked license, right?  He would have had to do something in the first place to get pulled over if I am not mistaken.  I want so badly to reason out why he should stay with the team, but honestly if this was a Spartan with this history we would be slamming Dantonio if he let him stay on the team.  Sure we can rationalize it any way we want, but in all honesty if this was another team we would say Stonum needs to go.  Really sad, but I think it has to be done.

Gotta wait a bit to see if anything else comes to light. But if this is all there is to it, and he drove on a revoked license for any reason other than a life-threatening emergency... then yeah, he should go.

That unless there is a VERY good explanation that I am not seeing, Stonum is gone.  Hoke cannot let this go.  

This sucks. 

I know that he screwed up, but let's keep some perspective:

This is NOT a DUI.

This is NOT Stonum acting in a manner unbecoming of a Michigan football player (which is what Hoke suspended him for).

This is NOT Stonum going out for a joyride without a license.

This is NOT even Stonum sriving to do something fun with friends.

The guy was driving TO HIS COURT MANDATED PROBATION CHECK-IN.  Perhaps he had a ride lined up and something fell through and he panicked out of fear of missing the appointment.

Driving with a suspended license is not a good thing, and it is a technical parole violation.  However, it is a far cry from driving while impaired, speeding or other violations that put society in danger. 

People need to calm down and remember some of the poor choices that they made when they were his age.  Again, not being an apologist, but this is a pretty silly thing to get worked up over.  In fact, if he has a decent excuse, I would bet that even the judge will allow this to slide.

He was not drunk, was not driving erratically or dangerously (the article would have mentioned this) and was coming from a probation hearing. It's like getting a traffic ticket. Let the state suspend his driving license further.

I don't do it anymore, but in high school and in college I occasionally drove under the influence.  I was never caught.  Granted this was a long time ago, but these are mistakes that young people make and if he has learned to not put others in danger that should be our main concern.  If we really care about Darryl, then we want him to make it through this.  There is a time for tough love, and there is a time for love.  May Hoke have the wisdom to decide which one is the right one to use.

Edit:  The other thing I'd like to add is what outcome does more good in the world?  That he is punished and his career is ruined? or that he is allowed to play and he turns himself around and gives back to the community like many of our former players?  Now I know that these are not mutually exclusive, but I think this is an opportunity to show that the program cares about Darryl.  Yeah it may be Tresselesque, but I hope we give him a shot at redemption on and off the field.

Let's stop all the speculation and let the legal process take it's course.

He's young and very stupid....if he has been otherwise exemplary in his past 8 months, this is not a big deal. Just make him run some stairs and he'll be fine.

That grown men/women are jumping to conclusions on this guy. As one poster pointed out, a ride might have fallen through and he was paranoid of being late. I've seen the guy out, and he doesn't even sip a beer anymore. Cut him some slack. He is doing all the right things.

i'd like to hear the circumstances of the case first, but depending on what they are, i could see hoke telling him to leave. at the very least, hoke will make him earn his way back and then some.

If he had a ride lined up that bailed and he panicked to ensure he got there, I could see this worthy of a several game suspension to start the season.  Before, I would have said any possible probation violation would have been an immediate dismissal from the squad, but this is one of the few exceptions that may allow him to stay on the team. 

If this is the lone black mark over the course of a year working on the scout team and more importantly, meeting probation requirements, then I hope he stays on the team. 

If this would have happened earlier, we would have had an open scholarship for Mr. Arnett. Terrible timing.

It's not the driving part, it's the lying part.  Also East Huron Street and the Probation Office are not that far from any part of town you'd expect a student to live in.  Heck I live out in Huron Hills and I can walk to main street in ~40 minutes and I'm not an athlete.  Additionally The Ride starts morning service around 6 AM or so for most routes.  Plus of course these things called taxis.  

I assume he was running later for his appointment, grabbed some wheels, and then lied to his PO.  Just bad moves all around.  

(If you're going to be late, use your cell to call the PO or something at 6:30 and say "Hey I know I have a checkin at 7 AM, but I got hung up, just got out the door and since I can't drive I have to walk over there.  I'm going to be 15 minutes late."  That's an offense that is much more explainable than driving and lying.)

Feel bad for people that are trying to make changes and come up short. I am sure a logical and good explanation will be given... But I hate to think that it has come to this if he has worked hard at making change.

Finds that this is not a parole violation, then it is no more than crossing sate street outside of the crosswalk. I know us Michigan fans find ourselves on a moral high horse, but come on....this is almost laughable. I will truly sympathize with the kid if this is the last straw.

The coaches already stuck their balls out for him and ioffered a second chance to earn the opportunity to play again. How is this repaid? With more lawbreaking and lies? What does he want? This isn't Ohio.

if this is just bad luck only time he did this fine. but if the parole officer suspect he has been driving himself to these apointments for awhile, and or driving other times and he had someone waiting for him to prove it, sorry last straw

I'd like to see what some of you guys would do if you had a probation date with a ride lined up but your ride falls through last minute. Some of you guys are being judgemental pricks w/o having all the facts. Get that stick out of your butt.

It's so sad, because it's not that hard to NOT break the law.  Responsibiltiy plus a little common sense combined with God given talent and you have the rest of your life taken care of.  Now, his road is most likely going to be difficult.  All because of a few easily avoidable bad choices.  

I want to feel bad for him, but I don't.  The right choices are easy.  

The sad thing is that he had plenty of ways to avoid this trouble. If this was a late-notice check-in, I'm sure, as a football player, he could have called a teamate or position coach...heck, call Hoke at home. Hoke would have made sure someone just happened to be driving through Stonum's neighborhood, saw him walking, and gave him a lift. 

He could have, of course, told the PO about his ride situation and just be a little late. As a star athelete, I wonder just how long it would take him to run to the courthouse. 

Failing all that, he could have been smarter in his underhandedness. Here's a thought: instead of driving right up to the courthouse, let's try parking down the street? After the appointment, walk home and explain to whomever he took the car from what he had to do. 

I know this is a minor thing, but at this rate I'd be fine with Stonum being allowed to continue his studies but otherwise not suit up for the Wolverines.  Yes, it hurts the team from a talent perspective, but he's had too many chances and appears unable or unwilling to learn from them.  And yeah, in the grand scheme of things it is minor - he was driving to his probation hearing, and I'm sure people with suspended or revoked licenses still do drive and just hope they don't get caught.  All that said, Stonum keeps making mistakes, mistakes that for a less talented player probably would have ended his association with the team.  Let him finish his college career academically, but right now he continues to not show the maturity necessary for his reenstatement to the team.

Before you all get bend out of shape, just remember that everyone drives drunk and on a suspended license.  You kill people, I kill people.  You steal from me and I steal from you and get paid for jobs I never worked.  Oh wait that might be a different school...

Sorry but he broke the rules. He was on a very very short leash already. If you break the rules you get punished and he's broken the rules countless times. This looks bad for the team and university. He should be held accountable for his actions.
If this were your son, would you want him essentially rewarded for ALMOST following all the rules/laws? I wouldn't.
Also it's a good thing this isn't anMSU or Ohio player because this would be full of 'he's gone' posts and pretty much no 'give him another chance.'

I have to assume Stonum's scheduled return was conditional: if you get a hangnail, you're gone. So, if that's the case, he has to get booted. He's had more than enough chances. And he's showing contempt for the rules. This ain't East Lansing.

This isn't just a probation violation.  He's driving without a drivers license.  That a pretty basic rule in our society.

Hoke was generous in giving Stonum a chance to take the time to get his life turned around and prove that he can follow basic rules.  Stonum violated Hoke's trust and Hoke's only option is to send him packing.

Sadly, this is probably going to set a precedent for future transgressors.  Hoke is going to be less likely to give a player the extra rope.

Okay with him coming back to the team.  As long as he did'nt kill any hookers or drink and drive.

You guys are fucking crazy. Yeah he was driving when he shouldn't have been, but his probation has been perfect thus far, even his officer said that. Let's find out why he was even stopped or where he was going that early in the morning. Some idiot fans hold the players to a higher standard than they even hold themselves - I think Brady Hoke knows that a mishap like this doesn't require any kind of drastic discipline.
