More trouble for Stonum
After 2 DUIs and isn't this 3 driving without a license? It better be.
If anyone sees Stonum getting in a vehicle..grab him..call it a citizens proactiove arrest
Someone get this man an Ann Arbor The Ride bus map. Now.
Wonder if Beamer can hook him up with a Greyhound schedule?
Afraid this is the end of the road for Darryl, as far as Michigan football is concerned. A pity.
we should be expecting a Freshman WR starter for Team 133?
Sammy Watkins did a pretty good job for Clemson this year.
We have no one as good as Sammy Watkins. Arnett could have been the guy, but alas, Stonum decided to fuck up just after he committed elsewhere. Son of a bitch.
I've got a good feeling that Darboh could step in and play a big role next year.
Everyone makes mistakes when they are young. The thing is that they need to learn from them and it would seem that he is not as he continues to make similar mistakes. To bad after he had a very promising 2010.
He gone.
Worst announcer ever.
Calling him an "announcer" is misleading.
He is merely a fan with a microphone.
Bob Ufer was a fan with a microphone. Harrelson is less of a White Sox fan and more of a hater of every other team that isn't the White Sox.
Not a homer issue. Ufer was wildly entertaining. Harrelson sits silently until he can spew off one of his contrived catch phrases.
Pam Ward wants in on that discussion
Craig James...
Dumb move, but the kid was trying to get to the probation office to check in at 7am. Kinda hard to find a ride.
I was afraid he did something dumb while down in N.O., this is still dumb...but I think if he's been perfect, the court may not worry about it.
We'll know tomorrow when he goes for his scheduled hearing.
Have to believe this is an appointment he didn't know about long in advance. No excuse to not have a way to get there. Perfect or not this is something that could have and should have been avoided.
He drove b/c he had to get to his probation meeting. Dumb but understandable. I don't think this is a hanging offense. He didn't endanger anyone by doing this.
If the courts say nothing to see here (probation officers know what he has been up to the past 8 months), I have no issue with him staying on the team. But if they smack him hard (again based on the previous 8 months), he is gone.
My feelings exactly. If this was a bad decision with good intentions (i.e. getting to his PO to check in), I don't think it needs to be the end of his career. If the judicial system decides this was serious, then I don't think there's any choice but to move on.
Even if he lives down on Main Street with the other guys on the team, the probation office is easy to get to from there by bus or even by bike.
And most of that trip is down hill.
When I lived in Ann Arbor...
...it was uphill.
...bothways.
wind and snow and dark of night (at 7AM in January).
No, there's no excuse for this. How does it make any sense at all to get into a car with a revoked license, then drive yourself to the courthouse, of all places, for your probation checkup?
Let's not blow this out of proportion.
as much as I appreciate Hoke giving the kid a second chance...he just doesn't seem to want to walk the straight and narrow. I think its time to move on from Darryl and that's too bad. He had the world at his finger tips and he just let it slip away by being irresponsible.
I do not see how they can allow him back on the team. I think it is time to part ways. We could really have used Stonum for next year, but how dumb can you be. He is driving to his probation officer meeting on a suspended license and then lies to his probation officer saying he was dropped off. If I was him, I would not do anything remotely illegal so that I could get back on the team. He has no one to blame for this but himself.
The mgo community RAILED MSU for Tucker getting one duo and Winston getting in one fight.
This is.... what? The third occurance? He was still on the team after two, eight? Is there any doubt he should be gone?
Who is tucker, why did he get a duo, and Winston got into 2 fights, one of them he did jail time for because he brain damaged a fellow MSU athlete. What the fuck are you talking about?
Unfortunately this is likely his last draw. Too bad, I thought he would step in well and decrease the loss of Hemingway.
Someone please donte one to him...half the ones parked at South Quad never even get used (at least circa 1997)
That was the kind of bad decision that will affect a lifetime.
If I'm Hoke I'm calling him now.
Well since you're Mr. Rager, you probably don't have a problem with Stonum's raging.
But, when you have 2 DUIs and have already been pulled over multiple times for driving without a license, you don't want to accrue more tickets/arrests. You will eventually go to jail. Prior to that, a college football coach will likely kick you off the team for being a dumbass.
If Stonum is kicked off the team, we lose our outside speed receiver. That is the big deal and is not a joke.
This offense may not be alone but when you compound all of his other mistakes he has made this should be the last one he has a chance to make while with Michigan. Driving with a suspened licence is a REAL law that he broke as well.
He should have had a ride lined up and things ready to go. As far as how bad would it have been, I can't say I have ever been in this position my self but I imagine that a phone call to who ever he needed to see and explain the situation would have been better then this.
Just said it your self, he still broke the law and as far as what Michigan stands for and the accountability that Hoke wants from his team this is something that cannot just be swept away.
No one said he is garbage or a terrible kid but this isn't what we want Michigan to be in the news for now or in the future. Kids breaking "minor" laws as you would call them, it's not what the program stands for period.
If he had walked and received a ticket for jay walking, I don't think that anyone would be up in arms about it.
By this logic, breaking out of prison isn't breaking a REAL law.
Stonum broke the law by driving drunk. Part of his punishment is that he is no longer allowed the privilege of driving. He circumvented his own punishment for the first crime, breaking ANOTHER law in the process.
I consider that a big deal in its own right. It is all the more so when combined with the previous violations.
7am is not particularly early. Buses, bikes, and feet are all perfectly capable of transporting an individual from one location to another. On a personal level, Stonum's bad decision is understandable. But, on an accountablility level, it is still a bad decision, it should not be excusable.
You're right, your brain doesn't work like his, or like most others apparently. It's a perfectly sound, albeit extreme, analogy. You said driving with a suspended was breaking a "follow up law" after breaking a "REAL" law, whatever that means. Breaking out of jail would also be a "follow up law", because guess what, if I go visit a prison today I'm perfectly free to walk out the front door without breaking any "REAL" or "follow up" laws. Staying in jail is a condition of punishment, as is the revocation of driving privileges. Don't adhere to either of these conditions, and there are consequences.
I dont think you really understand the law. 1 speeding ticket isn't the worst thing in the world. 15 speeding tickets in a row and you are probably going to jail. 1 driving with a suspended license may not be a huge deal, but after DUI's and other driving while license suspended tickets, he might spend some time in jail. But that isn't so bad, is it
By itself, I'd agree, too. However, he was on probation. He had a probation officer, it wasn't fun and games. Now, until all the facts are out, I am not going to make further judgement, but based on what we see right this second, I don't think it looks good.
Look, if I was due to receive a $200,000 scholarship to attend one of the world's greatest universities to play a game... I'd get my ass up and walk. Time to move on and give a great opportunity to someone who wants it.
-Chet
Ive had friends on probation....and typically you have to call in each morning especially for drinking offenses and they make to you come in and do an alcohol test and they can schedule that as early as that morning. I don't necessarily know he's probation requirements but if he is one that has to call in each morning then its possible he did know last minuet and come in to do an alcohol test and if any tests are missed you do go to jail because it counts as a failed drug test. So it is very possible it was last minuet and he had no ride and would have been sent to jail if not there. Wait til you get all the facts before judging someone
But I'm sure he knows the probation check up schedule ahead of time and can make the proper arrangements.
He has what, 84+ teammates he can ask for a ride. Probably countless jersey chasers on his nutz that he can ask for a ride. Or he could ride a damn bike or take the bus.
I can see UM and the probayion officers agreeing to sweep this under the rug (if its as simple as not having a ride) but he has got to get it together. At this point I don't think the team can count on him not screwing up prior to the 2012 season.
UM should plan for him not to be on the team IMO.
No, that's wrong. Don't drive a goddamned car if you don't have a license. Not planning ahead by finding a ride or leaving enough time to take the bus is messing up.
I'm not saying Stonum is a bad guy, but it's wrong and stupid of him to drive without a license. As Hoke says, he's not being accountable to his teammates and being selfish. There is no other way to slice it.
I had an old roommate with 2 DUIs and he arranged for rides or didn't go places. He went 2.5 years without a license and didn't drive himself once. He fucked up but at least he realized his mistakes. This is not a single incident for Stonum. At this point, he is a habitual offender.
Exactly. I'm sure Stonum is a decent guy, but this decision coupled with his previous offenses illustrate that he holds his own convenience above his team and the law in his list of priorities. Right or wrong, this is not the type of distraction a football team needs.
I spent four years in Ann Arbor, and had a car for one. I managed to get around Ann Arbor just fine in those first three years. Sure I wasn't a football player with early morning lift schedules, and tight connect times, but I managed not to get 2 DUIs either. (... the brilliance of sending your kid to college without a car for the first three years ...)
I am sure it was hard to find a lift, given the holiday schedule and bowl preps, ect., but he had other options. (If his schedule was too tight, he should have had a discussion with the coaches to work out an arrangement.)
He was in DB's dog house already. Hoke stood up for him. I think he's just broken the last straw.
Was his appointment in AA? Because if it was I definitely agree with you. The courthouse is probably not more than a 20 minute walk from anywhere. If you can walk to class you can walk there. Unless he overslept (which is possible) I don't know why he would feel the need to drive anyway.
Period.
How does someone get a suspended sentence? Duh. Its not about something simple, its about something simple after really effing up. He was let off easy before, and now he will be held accountable..
Maybe Mr. Rager should follow a program like OSU or Miami...not so many standards there to keep.
Pretty sure the L in that officer's name is a typo. Stonum is a card carrying moron and should have been gone a year ago, but this is just your typical a-hole cop doing what a-hole cop do.
He is 22 years old and part of a major college football's S&C program. Ann Arbor is not that big. Walk or jog your ass there.
At the very least mix in a bus schedule. They are free with a student ID.
Did he drive once without a license and get caught? Or did he do this a lot and finally get caught? Usually when someone gets a speeding ticket its not because the one time they sped they got caught. Its because they speed when they drive and will get caught eventually.
So this could be another series of bad decisions to drive and not just one.
You are a joke. I don't believe I have ever read anything from you that adds value, comedy or insight to a topic on this board.
Please go away.
I am sure these comments will get removed if I go any farther with this, so I will refrain out of respect for the rules Brian and the Mods expect us to respect.
This board is full of users that respect Brian's creation and the fact that it is not like other boards. For the most part, it is full of people that add value and insight, which makes it different than some of the trash you see on Sparty and Buckeye boards.
I suggest you visit the page with some of the guidelines of the baord and then respect them, and other users if you want anyone to respct what you have to say.
To rules. Holding yourself to even a normal standard (i.e. Following the laws that everyone else has to follow).
Too many chances. Too many blown chances.
Damn.
ARRRRGH. Why the hell does he keep driving cars? Also, why is he so bad at driving cars that he keeps getting pulled over while driving them? Can someone else not drive him? GET THIS MAN A GODDAMNED BIKE.
In 5 years in Ann Arbor, I was pulled over 0 times. I don't even like driving, but if I did, I'd still attempt to not get pulled over. What is so tough about driving (or not driving) for this guy?
See what Hoke does. Not the smartest move on Stonum's part. Not necessarily very bad by itself, but compounded with his past...
give Hoke many options, unfortunately... Almost boils down to a yes or no answer at this point.
Don't know if Hoke can keep afford to keep him around. I think it might set a bad example of what is and is not acceptable as a Michigan player. He was given two stikes to get his act cleaned up and to stay out of trouble and serve his suspention and get back on the field. Don't know if it is worth taking a chance on the third stike.
Well, this goes to show what I've always said is true, spending too much time in Louisiana lowers ones I.Q.
Until we know the circumstances as to why he did this, I wish everyone would reserve their comments.
I am seriously asking here because I am trying to decide that myself at the moment. I mean...it's one thing if someone's life is at stake and no one is around to help (and drive) but you, then that seems like a valid reason. As it sounds here, he needed to get to an appointment and decided to drive there.
I agree with what many have already said; in and of itself it isn't a terribly serious offense. But when one takes into account DS's history it paints a somewhat different picture of a young man who cares nothig for the laws that society has laid out. As much as I hate to say it (because I really want him on the team), I don't know how Hoke could keep him on the team. I know if I were coach he wouldn't be.
What circumstances would those be? His only ride to where he needed to be was smashed by an asteroid? All phone service, including cells, stopped working so he couldn't call a cab? All the buses in the area stopped working? He suddenly found himself strapped to a bed with some crazy chick smashing his ankles because she is his biggest fan?
Not really sure what you need here. 2 DUIs and multiple driving will suspended == disregard.
Stonum enough is enough.
how people can say this is not a big deal. In and of itself maybe not. The fact is Stonum has been busted twice for drinking and driving. He license was suspended and he got 2 years of probation. He was booted off the team and allowed to potentially earn his way back by doing what Hoke asks of him and playing on the practice squad. i think Michigan went out on a limb to not just cut ties with him already and this is how he repays them. He is a U of M football player. He has to know that anything he does will be visible and in the press. This makes the University look bad, that a player already on probation breaks the law, as driving on a suspended license is against the law. Then he lies to the probation officer when asked how he got to the meeting. This is just plain stupid. He should know better. Therefore to me, in this instance this is a very big deal.
As it is, he allegedly broke a law and possibly violated probation, but he didn't hurt anyone or even risk hurting anyone. Don't get me wrong - this was very, very dumb, but I'm not outraged by this.
Don't know that anyone has said that they were outraged by this, just that it piles on a list of issues that DS has had and he should have known better. Whether he hurt someone or not isn't the point, the law is the law and everyone is suppose to abide by them. He obviously has had a problem doing so and this just continues to prove that.
of the transgression, he broke the law. He already had two strikes. Let’s remember that he is not just a normal college student. He is a U of M football player on scholarship and he represents the University. Therefore, it will be tough regardless of what the court says for Hoke to sweep this under the rug.
I don't think this is a small issue, but I don't think he needs to be kicked off of the team for it either. I'd be much more concerned (as I realize you likely would be too) if he did something that hurt someone that did not lead to a criminal charge than I am with this - a (possible) criminal offense that had no victim or even potential victim.
Errr, his license was suspended due to poor decisions behind the wheel. People get their licenses pulled because they do things that could injure the public. Clearly in this case it was innocent, however the stockpile of charges is the concerning part.
If he doesn't get the AXE from Hoke who's to say that he won't do something more stupid next month? At this point, the odds of him playing the entire 2012 season are slim.
UM needs a WR upgrade ASAP. Not enough speed or playmakers there with Hemmingway gone. We basically have middle tier Big Ten WRs on the depth chart right now.
Hopefully one of the underclassmen really steps up. Roundtree is pretty nullfied in the new O and Gallon hasn't shown that he can be a #1 type yet.
This is what Coach Hoke means when he preaches being accountable to eachother. This was a selfish act that hurts the team. I can't stand liars either. He's gone....period. I also hope he eventually learns a lesson before he damages other and himself.
Multiple teammates have recently tweeted or talked about him having a great attitude and being a great teammate after all he has been through. It's to bad that he didn't think about this decison before he made it.
after the last DUI. Hoke had a chance to really set the tone and show that he takes these issues seriously. Instead he gave a third (fourth? I've lost count) chance and look what happens. I called Hoke's unwillingness to cut Stonum after his second DUI and third alcohol related offense his first major mistake at UM and I stand by that assessment. I thought we were better than this.
I disagree. I think it's truly horrible that Stonum was involved in DUI-related offenses, but I don't think it's ridiculous to bench a kid for a year when Hoke hasn't had any involvement before. Prior to this morning's issue, Stonum was only on his second chance with Hoke, and Hoke had already punished him severely (a 1-year benching isn't exactly lenient); it's not like Stonum had continuously shown Hoke that he was untrustworthy and not trying to make changes, and it's also not like Hoke didn't come down on him pretty hard.
I thought suspending Stonum for a season was a pretty significant punishment. Heck, if he hadn't suspended him, this event would have little to no significance or impact on Stonum or the team as he'd be headed somewhere else.
I've actually thought about this specific decision from Hoke and I truly believe he made the right one last summer. Should Stonum have been punished by the team? Of course. Should he have been kicked off? He certainly deserved to be removed from the team. However, I also think you need to consider the best interests of both the school and Stonum.
If Stonum had been kicked off of the team, what happens then? He either never plays college football again or is somehow able to convince them to grant a transfer for him to play somewhere else where's he's likely to get in more trouble.
From the date Hoke issued the punishment, it was well over a year before Stonum would receive any gameplay. To me, if it's your last chance and you do absolutely nothing wrong for well over a year, I think you've not only proven yourself to the team, but worked to improve yourself as well.
I had doubts that Stonum would be able to avoid trouble again (as we see today), but you have to have the best interests in mind of the players as well. Simply dumping Stonum is no good for anybody. Makes you look extremely tough, but what he did is already significantly above what most coaches in the scenario choose to do.
I agree. Dumping helps no one and he never learns his lesson. Suspending him for a year and making him work the scout team and other internal punishments he received, should have helped him be more accountable, keep structure, finish school, and be in a positive atmosphere.
JESUS, kid.
I am sure it is hard as hell to give up driving for 365 days, and I truly sympathize. It surely sucks. But that's the medicine you were handed, and it was a lieu of jail time, so it was something to be grateful for. And to be adhered to. It's a small violation in the scheme of things, but the obvious edict is DON'T VIOLATE IT AT ALL.
I liked this kid and I've missed his personality (and ability!) all year. But if Hoke has to cut him loose I will understand. It is just tragic if he ends up blowing his college football career on stupid-ass decisions like not grabbing a cab to court. ARGH.
Well gosh darnit
That really, really sucks. He gone.
Isn't that just a traiffic ticket?
Is that a big deal?
will be if it's found to be a probation violation. I'm not saying that that will or will not happen, but that would be the bigger issue.
it could be worse that the punishment for the offense itself, and it ususally worth tacking on some jail time if offense committed while on probation.
Regardless, its bad.
I'm not sure about Michigan, but in Illinois driving on a revoked license because of DUI is mandatory jail time and depending on number of priors it could actually be charged as a class 4 felony.
It's a misdemeanor while on probation. Jail time may not be likely, but it's not that unlikely either.
After seeing this very encouraging article in the Daily, I was really hopeful for a great performance and leader for team 133.
http://michigandaily.com/sports/stonum-motivated-best-friend-hemingways-sugar-bowl-performance
Pity how things have turned out.
I just talked to a buddy about this the other day and how he was doing good. COME ON MAN
Well perhaps we now have a schollie for Arnett...oh, wait...this really sucks
you would sure think that somebody on the team would have given him a ride. One of the 1st things that Hoke said is he wants them to be accountable for each other. Sad that this had to happen.
Sad and it will definitely hurt us next year, but probably time to move on.
It isn't just driving with a revoked license, right? He would have had to do something in the first place to get pulled over if I am not mistaken. I want so badly to reason out why he should stay with the team, but honestly if this was a Spartan with this history we would be slamming Dantonio if he let him stay on the team. Sure we can rationalize it any way we want, but in all honesty if this was another team we would say Stonum needs to go. Really sad, but I think it has to be done.
implied that he was pulled over by an officer linked to the probation officer. In other words, I think they felt Stonum was lying about how he got to the meeting. The officer who pulled him over probably followed him and once he saw him driving pulled him over. At least that was the impression I got.
His probation officer could have believed that he drove himself and then asked the police to pull him over if they saw him. I don't know that this happened, but it might have.
Edit: beaten by JewofM, who is correct that the article strongly implies that the officer who ticketed Stonum was working with the probation officer - in fact, he is a liason to what appears to be a probation program.
DWB man. DWB.
Gotta wait a bit to see if anything else comes to light. But if this is all there is to it, and he drove on a revoked license for any reason other than a life-threatening emergency... then yeah, he should go.
Your license is suspended Darryl, WHY ARE YOU DRIVING!?
FFFFFUUUUUUUUU
That unless there is a VERY good explanation that I am not seeing, Stonum is gone. Hoke cannot let this go.
This sucks.
I know that he screwed up, but let's keep some perspective:
This is NOT a DUI.
This is NOT Stonum acting in a manner unbecoming of a Michigan football player (which is what Hoke suspended him for).
This is NOT Stonum going out for a joyride without a license.
This is NOT even Stonum sriving to do something fun with friends.
The guy was driving TO HIS COURT MANDATED PROBATION CHECK-IN. Perhaps he had a ride lined up and something fell through and he panicked out of fear of missing the appointment.
Driving with a suspended license is not a good thing, and it is a technical parole violation. However, it is a far cry from driving while impaired, speeding or other violations that put society in danger.
People need to calm down and remember some of the poor choices that they made when they were his age. Again, not being an apologist, but this is a pretty silly thing to get worked up over. In fact, if he has a decent excuse, I would bet that even the judge will allow this to slide.
He was not drunk, was not driving erratically or dangerously (the article would have mentioned this) and was coming from a probation hearing. It's like getting a traffic ticket. Let the state suspend his driving license further.
It's not a DUI or anything even remotely close to it. No big deal.
Not to be apologists or anothing. The guy had two DUI and two probation violation. So, given that he's now added driving on a suspended license and lying to an officer of the court, you still think Hoke should just let it go? Okay, Dantonios.
I don't do it anymore, but in high school and in college I occasionally drove under the influence. I was never caught. Granted this was a long time ago, but these are mistakes that young people make and if he has learned to not put others in danger that should be our main concern. If we really care about Darryl, then we want him to make it through this. There is a time for tough love, and there is a time for love. May Hoke have the wisdom to decide which one is the right one to use.
Edit: The other thing I'd like to add is what outcome does more good in the world? That he is punished and his career is ruined? or that he is allowed to play and he turns himself around and gives back to the community like many of our former players? Now I know that these are not mutually exclusive, but I think this is an opportunity to show that the program cares about Darryl. Yeah it may be Tresselesque, but I hope we give him a shot at redemption on and off the field.
According to AnnArbor.com, http://www.annarbor.com/news/crime/michigan-wide-receiver-darryl-stonum-is-ticketed-for-operating-with-a-revoked-license/
"Stonum, 21, was stopped by Ann Arbor police after he checked in with probation at 7:03 a.m., said Steve Hill, Stonum's probation officer. Hill said Stonum was not taken into custody.
A probation violation form is being completed, but so far Stonum has not been charged with violating probation.
Court records also allege that Stonum lied to Hill today prior to the traffic stop. Records say when Stonum checked in at the probation office on East Huron Street he told Hill that a female friend had dropped him off on nearby East Washington Street.
Stonum is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow at 8 a.m. for a hearing in front of Judge Charles Pope that was previously scheduled to ensure Stonum is complying with the conditions of his probation. It is likely the issue will be raised at that hearing. Records show Stonum was stopped this morning by Officer Bill Clock, who Hill said is the police department's liason to the sobriety court program."
Let's stop all the speculation and let the legal process take it's course.
as this punishment is the equivalent of his offense.
run many, many stairs at 6:00 AM. Better yet, have him bike many, many miles. It will be good practice.
Best comment in this thread.
He's young and very stupid....if he has been otherwise exemplary in his past 8 months, this is not a big deal. Just make him run some stairs and he'll be fine.
That grown men/women are jumping to conclusions on this guy. As one poster pointed out, a ride might have fallen through and he was paranoid of being late. I've seen the guy out, and he doesn't even sip a beer anymore. Cut him some slack. He is doing all the right things.
This is a funny post. People who read the facts in the article are "jumping to conclusions" by condemning those facts.
But you are perfectly fine with assuming he is "doing all the right things."
Hi pot. I'm kettle. You're black.
i'd like to hear the circumstances of the case first, but depending on what they are, i could see hoke telling him to leave. at the very least, hoke will make him earn his way back and then some.
If he had a ride lined up that bailed and he panicked to ensure he got there, I could see this worthy of a several game suspension to start the season. Before, I would have said any possible probation violation would have been an immediate dismissal from the squad, but this is one of the few exceptions that may allow him to stay on the team.
If this is the lone black mark over the course of a year working on the scout team and more importantly, meeting probation requirements, then I hope he stays on the team.
If this would have happened earlier, we would have had an open scholarship for Mr. Arnett. Terrible timing.
you aren't the arbiter of football scholarships. To pull his scholly with the ink isn't dry on the morning paper and when no one here has the facts or the circumstances is a wee bit premature. This kid has workied his ass off for years, has been publically humbled and has worked on the scout team just so we can sit around and watch and cheer and pump our fists in the air sing with the muppet glee club. How do you think his team feels about this? I doubt they want him gone. Stonum has to answer for what he's done, but not to us. That's for his team, coaches, the AD and the law to decide and I will be satisfied with whatever decision they arrive at. Most importantly, I will withold my uninformed opinion on whether or not he should have a football scholarship at our great university.

From the article:
Court records also allege that Stonum lied to Hill prior to the traffic stop. Records say when Stonum checked in at the probation office he told Hill that a female friend had dropped him off on nearby East Washington Street.
It's not the driving part, it's the lying part. Also East Huron Street and the Probation Office are not that far from any part of town you'd expect a student to live in. Heck I live out in Huron Hills and I can walk to main street in ~40 minutes and I'm not an athlete. Additionally The Ride starts morning service around 6 AM or so for most routes. Plus of course these things called taxis.
I assume he was running later for his appointment, grabbed some wheels, and then lied to his PO. Just bad moves all around.
(If you're going to be late, use your cell to call the PO or something at 6:30 and say "Hey I know I have a checkin at 7 AM, but I got hung up, just got out the door and since I can't drive I have to walk over there. I'm going to be 15 minutes late." That's an offense that is much more explainable than driving and lying.)
Lol you would have told the cop the truth? "How did you get here CRex?" ..."Oh, I drove my ass here because I was running late" please.... Some of you guys are unbelievable.
Maybe you should try reading a little closer it isn't about telling the cop the truth in his post. He said to call his PO and let him know he is running behind. That to me seems like it would have been the smart thing to do.
And how do you know he didn't call? Maybe the PO told him he wasn't giving him any extra time, maybe that's why he suspected Stonum when he got there in the first place?
And the first statement Crex makes in his post is "It's not the driving part, it's the lying part. " He doesn't say "It's not the driving part, it's the not calling for more time part." So maybe you should try reading a little closer yourself.
I'd have called my PO at 6:30 or whatever and left him a voicemail that said "Hey, I got hung up getting out of my apartment [perhaps blame my roommate a bit or something]. I'm hauling ass across town right now, but I'm on foot so I'll be 15 minutes late". Then I call Hoke and leave him the same voicemail.
At that point, unless I've made a habit of being late to my PO checkins, I'm assuming the PO would not be a total douchebag. If he is a total douchebag though it is still possible for Hoke to say:
"You know what, CRex was 15 minutes late to one meeting in 8 months, I made him run some laps and that is that."
It's much easier to garner sympathy in that case. Everyone's been late for work, class, whatever. It's the whole deciding to do something illegal and then lying about it. Stonum though seems to have a trouble leaving his ride in the driveway. He takes it out drinking with him, he gets nailed multiple times with a suspended license, and instead of getting a Huffy he keeps getting in trouble. If he hasn't learned to leave his whip in the driveway by now, he has major problems.
Also Stonum was nailed by the officer assigned to the parole office. So it sounds like the PO was so skeptical he had Stonum followed by the police officer. Either Stonum is a horrible liar or else they've thought he was driving for awhile and set this up in advance.
I know he didn't make the best decision when he decided to drive there. However, none of us know the circumstances behind that decision and some of you are willing to crucify a Michigan player before those circumstances reach the public light. Everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt, and there's certainly a few scenarios that would turn this into a borderline understandable mistake.
What, like he was given a pill that forces him to lie?
I'd like for you to give an acceptable reason to lie to your parole officer. I'll wait....
Because if you tell him the truth you'll go back to jail.
Many of these kids have experiences with institutions and law enforcement that would make them not feel safe telling the truth. Its really easy to judge it from a position of black and white (literally and figuratively).
I said an acceptable reason. In what world is lying to the cops so you don't go back to jail acceptable?
This isn't a racial issue, this is a repeat offender issue. I would wager he doesn't trust the cops, not because they have treated him unfairly, but because he has been arrested twice for drunk driving.
I'm glad that its all rainbows and butterflies over there but there are all kinds of reasons to lie to the cops, like when one pulls you over and asks, "have you been drinking?" or if they ask something about your friend and you want to get their story before selling your friend out, or you think that someone got what they deserved, or when you want to protect someone or protect yourself.
How's the air up there?
You are not very smart. Yes, there are plenty of reasons to lie to cops. I'm still waiting to hear one that is actually acceptable.
I actually got a DUI when I was young. Guess what....I didn't have to lie to the cops because I didn't break the law after that. If I got pulled over after that and was asked "have you been drinking," common sense would say if I lied it would be because I was breaking the law. None of what you said addresses anything I posted.
Maybe stonum should stop breaking the law so he doesn't have to lie to the cops. Also, I'm still waiting for an acceptable reason to lie to the cops.....one that doesn't include "so after he broke the law he wouldn't get in more trouble." This isn't about high horses, it is about a player representing my Alma mater breaking the law numerous times
If you tell the truth to the cop in that situation you're a gigantic moron. Hell, I'm a doctor and I have people lie to me all the time because they think the truth will get them in trouble if they tell me. (drug use, ect)
But we can never forget that the kid is 20 years old. Don't we all wish we were so wise at that age to do everything the right way?
I'm not saying Stonum doesn't deserve accountability and punishment for his actions. Because he does. I'm just saying it may not be the instant Michigan football banhammer that some folks seem to think it is for him.
I see no reason it is not. He has two DUIs in his time here and multiple driving on suspended license charges (the second DUI came while he was driving on a suspended license). After all that he was still on the team and on scholarship. He's now tacked on another driving on a suspended license charge and picked up a lying to his parole officer as well for variety's sake. We've checked the swing of the banhammer multiple times and now it needs to come down.
He's also had 3.5 years on scholarship so far. I'd assume we'd kick him off the team but honor the scholarship for the Winter term. So assuming Stonum hasn't been slacking on academics he should leave with a degree or only a few credits shy of a degree. We're not kicking him out in the cold here.
No one is asking him to do "everything the right way." The fact is, he's been given chances to stop making mistakes, yet he continues to make them. He's a grown man, and he's responsible for the terrible decisions he keeps making. If this was a one-time thing then I'd agree with you, but it's not.
Feel bad for people that are trying to make changes and come up short. I am sure a logical and good explanation will be given... But I hate to think that it has come to this if he has worked hard at making change.
Finds that this is not a parole violation, then it is no more than crossing sate street outside of the crosswalk. I know us Michigan fans find ourselves on a moral high horse, but come on....this is almost laughable. I will truly sympathize with the kid if this is the last straw.
The coaches already stuck their balls out for him and ioffered a second chance to earn the opportunity to play again. How is this repaid? With more lawbreaking and lies? What does he want? This isn't Ohio.
if this is just bad luck only time he did this fine. but if the parole officer suspect he has been driving himself to these apointments for awhile, and or driving other times and he had someone waiting for him to prove it, sorry last straw
I'd like to see what some of you guys would do if you had a probation date with a ride lined up but your ride falls through last minute. Some of you guys are being judgemental pricks w/o having all the facts. Get that stick out of your butt.
can make two phone calls: 1.) call a taxi asap, and 2.) call your probation officer and court telling them you'll be late, and request re-schedule.
If in this case, the mistake was relying on a "friend" for a "last minute" ride who is completely unreliable, why do that to yourself?
Just wake up a a fucking hour earlier and call a freaking taxi.
Maybe he doesn't have the money to waste on taxi rides? Maybe his friend had been reliable up to that juncture? Maybe his friend lives on the other side of town and his car broke down?
maybe...maybe...maybe.. the dude is a man. He has screwed up time and time again. The excuse game has gotten old.
came out of nowhere and trampled his fingers so he couldn't dial any phone numbers, and then a purple and pink unicorn circled back to fart a rainbow so bright he was temporarily blinded and couldn't see the numbers on the phone keypad either.
No, you're right. For sure it was the "My car broke down! I'm on the other side of town, bro!"
I don't know about anybody else, but I'm relieved that there is such a deep reservoir of excuses out there for not being on time.
It's so sad, because it's not that hard to NOT break the law. Responsibiltiy plus a little common sense combined with God given talent and you have the rest of your life taken care of. Now, his road is most likely going to be difficult. All because of a few easily avoidable bad choices.
I want to feel bad for him, but I don't. The right choices are easy.
The sad thing is that he had plenty of ways to avoid this trouble. If this was a late-notice check-in, I'm sure, as a football player, he could have called a teamate or position coach...heck, call Hoke at home. Hoke would have made sure someone just happened to be driving through Stonum's neighborhood, saw him walking, and gave him a lift.
He could have, of course, told the PO about his ride situation and just be a little late. As a star athelete, I wonder just how long it would take him to run to the courthouse.
Failing all that, he could have been smarter in his underhandedness. Here's a thought: instead of driving right up to the courthouse, let's try parking down the street? After the appointment, walk home and explain to whomever he took the car from what he had to do.
I know this is a minor thing, but at this rate I'd be fine with Stonum being allowed to continue his studies but otherwise not suit up for the Wolverines. Yes, it hurts the team from a talent perspective, but he's had too many chances and appears unable or unwilling to learn from them. And yeah, in the grand scheme of things it is minor - he was driving to his probation hearing, and I'm sure people with suspended or revoked licenses still do drive and just hope they don't get caught. All that said, Stonum keeps making mistakes, mistakes that for a less talented player probably would have ended his association with the team. Let him finish his college career academically, but right now he continues to not show the maturity necessary for his reenstatement to the team.
/ And another thing, back in my day...
Before you all get bend out of shape, just remember that everyone drives drunk and on a suspended license. You kill people, I kill people. You steal from me and I steal from you and get paid for jobs I never worked. Oh wait that might be a different school...
Sorry but he broke the rules. He was on a very very short leash already. If you break the rules you get punished and he's broken the rules countless times. This looks bad for the team and university. He should be held accountable for his actions.
If this were your son, would you want him essentially rewarded for ALMOST following all the rules/laws? I wouldn't.
Also it's a good thing this isn't anMSU or Ohio player because this would be full of 'he's gone' posts and pretty much no 'give him another chance.'
/that went longer than i thought
/coherent?still tired from drive back to M from NOLA
I have to assume Stonum's scheduled return was conditional: if you get a hangnail, you're gone. So, if that's the case, he has to get booted. He's had more than enough chances. And he's showing contempt for the rules. This ain't East Lansing.
Oh dear. Stonum does this the day after Arnett commits to MSU, allegedly because we didn't have a scholarship available? Damn.
This isn't just a probation violation. He's driving without a drivers license. That a pretty basic rule in our society.
Hoke was generous in giving Stonum a chance to take the time to get his life turned around and prove that he can follow basic rules. Stonum violated Hoke's trust and Hoke's only option is to send him packing.
Sadly, this is probably going to set a precedent for future transgressors. Hoke is going to be less likely to give a player the extra rope.
This is terrible because it's such a SMALL thing, and he's gone through 12 positive probation reviews?!
I mean, if he had done something major, then it's easy to say, but man...if you can work on the big stuff, why would you let the stupid stuff mess you up?!
Sorry to say, but I think he's probably gone.
You JUST CAN'T do these piddly-ass, civilian-acceptable mistakes and still play Michigan football.
Meh. Everyone makes a mistake here or there or there or there.
I guess Roundtree will really have to step up then. Who starts on the other side though? Gallon seems a litle too small to play on the outside. Is Jeremy Jackson good enough or do we see Justice Hayes start to play that sort of wildcard role that we thought he would play?. Like a Percy Harvin role.
Don't forget Jerald Robinson.
Okay with him coming back to the team. As long as he did'nt kill any hookers or drink and drive.
And to the self righteous crowd here that do drink and drive. It's only a matter of time.
Trollin so hard!!!
The problem is that he DID drink and drive - twice. He also lied to his probation officer about how he got to the appointment, AFTER he got pulled over on the way there (so he should have known the probation officer would find out about it).
He's had 2 DUIs and a prior probation violation (which involved leaving the state and failing to report on several occasisons). I don't care how minor the offense, he's out of chances.
You guys are fucking crazy. Yeah he was driving when he shouldn't have been, but his probation has been perfect thus far, even his officer said that. Let's find out why he was even stopped or where he was going that early in the morning. Some idiot fans hold the players to a higher standard than they even hold themselves - I think Brady Hoke knows that a mishap like this doesn't require any kind of drastic discipline.
From his probation appointment when he got stopped. He lied when asked how he got to the appointment. He said his girlfriend drove him. After he left, the police stopped him and found out he was suspended. They cited him but released him. With such a good reporting record and his commitment to his probation, he might get a pass. Don't know.
Hold me, Ace!!!
you are forgiven ..
How does a guy with no licence drive a car? Where did he get it? How stupid can this guy be. The team needs him for next year, but in my opinion, not enough. Goodbye Darryl.
Besides being having incredibly poor decision making skills he must be a terrible driver how do you get pulled over that many times anyway?
Who cares, get back on the field DS
Everyone knows that unicorns would never fart a rainbow. That's just ridiculous. Totally inappropriate comment on my part. I'm sorry.
