On this morning's Recruiting Roundup Sam seemed to double down on his previous indication that "a couple" of good things would happen for us in June. Today he responded to a questioner who felt that we have been missing out on too many of the very top prospects; ie, Isaac, Levenberry, Garnett, etc.. Sam's answer was that we already have many top guys in this class and he also hinted very broadly that we can expect some top names to commit to the Maize & Blue in the very near future. No gut feelings and no names mentioned, but a very confident statement. Let the speculation begin. LaQuon and Poggi are the two obvious big names out there, and though Hurst is not a big name (yet) I think he would be a fantastic addition to the class. Get those three on board and we are playing with house money.
More Optimism from Sam Webb
Get (x) recruit and THEN we're playing with house money.
That's what we've said about the last 5 commits. We're already playing with house money.
You do know that we currently have the #1 ranked class, right? Not sure how you think that equates to having missed out on top guys.
The two arent mutually exclusive. We all know we have an amazing class, but I don't see how you can deny that we've missed out on some recruits (Isaac, Levenberry) who we had great shots at.
Every school misses out on great recruits they think they have a good shot at. We see Michigan as everyone's dream, but for a kid who didn't grow up thinking that and who has the option of some combination of Alabama, LSU, USC, Oklahoma, Florida, Auburn, Penn State, and yes, even Ohio and ND, it isn't hard to see that some will choose to go elsewhere. It's no big deal. You just have to win your share of the battles. It's like baseball. Even the best team is going to lose 40% of its games.
with Wolverine 73.
But is the best team going to leave the bases loaded in the 8th inning after loading them up with no outs and then seeing a horrible strike-out, a weak ground-out and an inexplicable 'struck out looking'?
Damn it! I had almost forgot about that poor excuse for an offense! At least we have JV going tonight.
that... Haters gon' hate...and potatoes gon' potate!
Wasn't sure I'd ever get someone to agree with me on that one. Damn potatoes...
almost guarantees missing out on a few others, simply because position spots are limited, and avoidance of competition. Nature of the beast.
LOVE this coaching staff's ability to recruit, regardless of a few misses.
If you told anyone we'd be here now (2/3 full class in May with all the 4 stars) we'd all take it.
Now we need to start pulling some RB's with that kind of profile (4 star, highly touted) and we'll be all set (and the succesfulQuon well, but he is fairly likely at this point).
After that fantastic weekend in February we were into house money. Already having a stud QB and Safety in the fold to add the OL, Butt, Hill, Lewis and Taco made for a great class. After that we have already added a couple of recievers, 2 highly rated linebackers, another corner and the 5th member to the Oline.
This group is already as highly rated as our top 10 class from 2012. I would say we are deep into the houses pockets with 6 spots left to fill.
Makes me smile every time I read his name. Imagine the chants of "Ta-CO! Ta-CO!" every time he notches a sack at the Big House...
Half off tacos at BTB, Chipotle and Pancheros every time Taco grabs a defensive touchdown.
Yeah, everytime Taco gets a sack, someone in the student section puts a maize sack over their head that we can call a Taco Sack.
a top rated RB (Wilkins), elite WR (Treadwell), a couple excellent interior DL (Poggi and Hurst), and a big corner. That would leave one wild card spot for another top prospect.
Maybe it will be someone such as McQuay, Cravens, or Mathis. Treadwell and Poggi have been known as top recruits on our board. I hope Treadwell commits soon but I do not see Poggi committing I feel like he is Bama all the way.
McQuay, Cravens, and Mathis are all real longshots. I would be very surprised if any of them were to commit to Michigan, let alone anytime soon. And even if Mathis did commit, he'd change his mind in three days. A commitment from him doesn't mean anything until NSD.
I hear Mathis is leaning more towards UAB, at the moment
Surprised you feel that way about Poggi. I think the rest of the world feels the exact opposite (Where's RDT when you need him?). Doesn't mean he will be a part of our class for sure, but right now, the odds are strongly in our favor.
Sign a top talent receiver, then we will be playing with house money.
Any insider scoop on Poggi out there? It seems like after his Alabama visit, things got really quiet. I remember them saying that they wanted to try to visit as many programs as they could by summer and make a decision by fall, but I haven't even heard about him visiting anywhere else. Has it come down to Michigan vs. Bama?
As for Sam Webb... I'm really hoping for Hurst and Treadwell. Please please please.
going silent following a visit to 'Bama... maybe waiting for a check to clear? You know, these damn scammers writing faked checks and all...
Or maybe he's just doing some heavy thinking on what is probably the biggest decision of his life so far. Enjoy the long weekend because our stressing over the question doesn't change a thing. (note: I obviously haven't heard anything either.)
Poggi is just that way.
For all the talk of Cravens, I am anxious to get Dymonte on campus. He's gunna be a stud. Treadwell would be a nice get as would any of the names we are all speculating on. FWIW, Webb is about as good a source as there is out there and he is usually conservative in his predictions. Sam does a nice job.
Hopefully Webb is a little better source than he was before the Spring Game...
Sam Webb didn't say he had any sources for that information prior to the spring game. He was asked a question of how many more recruits we'd have by the spring game, and he took a guess based on nothing more than his educated speculation. He clearly indicated that it was only speculation, and didn't even have very specific people in mind for that speculation.
Knowing that, this sounds different. This is information that he is passing along, rather than a speculation that he was asked to make.
So if you're going to bang on Sam Webb then please tell me who has more accurate insight and better connections in regards to Michigan recruiting.
Sam Webb doesn't have "non-contact" periods.
Well it's not Ace...that's for sure. Wish we had TomVH back, I miss those TomVH:"Buckle Up".
but no need to crap on Ace, who is a fine contributor to this board, and may still be establishing himself somewhat.
I'd guess Ace has a lot more information than you. douche
Meanwhile, you're adding valuable content to the board.
You do realize you're some of the best Michigan-related information for free, right?
In his defense, these are 17 year old kids that are under a lot of pressure to make big decisions. They might think they know what they want one day and completely change directions the next.
We can never really know what they want until NSD. Ever hear of Josh Garnett?
And sometimes not then. Ever hear of Alex Kozan?
JC from 24/7 sports just said this morning that he doesn't expect Michigan to get any new commits for awhile. He thinks Michigan has no shot for the RB Green and didn't sound to upbeat about Wilkens either. He also doesn't think Hurst is a lock. Its interesting to hear the different services opinions. Scout is my favorite, but there all interesting.
Sam Webb has a great track record and is completely immersed in Michigan athletcs so I'll give him the nod over this guy JC.
I think JC is the new Ace Williams.
Let's not forget, that Hurst has told multiple interviewers that he hopes to make a decision AFTER he gets home from his Michigan visit and has had a chance to talk things over with his family.
I'm not saying he won't be so impressed that he won't commit on the spot, but that seems to be the assumption on this board and across the blogosphere, and I'd hate to see mass panic if the kid quietly goes home leaving us all dangling from our seatbelts in a circle of empty PBR cans.
Watch it buddy. I'll be drinking Hamm's.
Thursday late morning "whatcha drinkin?" thread?
Black Label before a player commits.
Arrogant Bastard (unofficial-official beer of the Michigan football fan) once I see the Hello: post.
I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I whistle for Mabel to bring it to me.
A different, misogynistic time.
It's so tough to really gauge where some of these kids will wind up at. One day they are a heavy lean one way then a visit or two later to a few other schools they sometimes are suddenly split between two schools or have a new favorite. I don't really blame them for that reason because I know that when I was 17 and 18 it would have been pretty tough for me to pick considering I'm sure visits to D1 football programs are usually pretty sweet. I tend to take what any of these recruiting experts say with a grain of salt because these are kids we are talking about and things can change and until that letter is signed nothing is guaranteed.
who was on Bill King this morning. he is not my favorite, but he is not some crackpot in the wilderness.
Is it wrong to say I'd just be happy if all of our current commits sign on NSD? This is already an unbelievable class, and of course it would be awesome to haul in a few more outstanding players in a few spots (like WR), but I feel like it's ALL gravy at this point.
If you're going to be all technical and stuff, we haven't signed anyone for 2013.
What's all this we stuff? Why, I signed him up just this morning. Be prepared to recognize the documents I shall present forthwith!!
...says the guy who called out another poster for saying "It's all gravy."
Pot, meet kettle.
You missed it.
Relax, man. Have another drag of you're avatar's cigarette...and relax.
I thought it looked filtered as well. Good eye.
The circumstantial evidence points to it being a standard cigarette. If it were not a standard cigarette, he would certainly be more mellow, and far less argumentative. The defense rests.
But we also have seven freshmen D-Linemen this year, 6 of whom are true freshmen. I agree it is a position of need... but I don't think we're reached OMG PANIC mode quite yet.
But wouldn't it be nice to develop the same depth of talent on the DL that we're getting on the OL (6 freshman, 5 commits)?
I agree though that we're not in panic mode at DL... particularly given the number of D-lineman that have Michigan in their top schools list... Hurst, Poggi(?), Teller, Qualls, Mathis, maybe others...
Nothing you said refutes what BISB said. Congratulations on being a prick....about everything. At this point, you add absolutely nothing to the board but negative points and a dickish attitude.
Most of your posts begin with "you are right" yet you seem to be in a constant state of disagreement. It's quite befuddling.
But probably not.
This whole argument started by you disagreeing with someone's opinion. A poster above said they'd be happy with just the guys who have committed already because they're so good, and you started arguing with him about it.
If you don't feel that way, that's your choice. But telling someone their opinion is wrong is a little too rage-y, Mr. Rager.
Every hero needs an anti-hero. Every great quest requires obstacles. Every subtle insight requires a raging diatribe in response. The world would be out of equilibrium without ragers.

Pissed in your corn flakes this morning? You seem especially touchy recently.
That's why he is Mr. Rager.
He's addicted to rage-ahol!
Time to bring in the good people from A&E's Intervention.
While I'm not in pants shitting mode, after this season we will likely be very young on D-line. There will be a wealth of talent, especially with guys like Pip, but I think it will be 2014 before we have a dominant d-line.
Hope I'm wrong, though.
I've never been in pants shitting mode. Can someone with experience explain that for me? I'd assume its quite uncomfortable and not very aesthetically pleasing.
I have some experience in pants shitting mode. Although, the last time I was in the aforementioned mode was when I was three, I'm fairly certain it was comfortable and 100% certain it was pleasing. I cannot say that I am immune from attacks of pants shitting mode today, but it would probably be a result of either a mauling by a grizzly bear, or an alien attack.
or...trusting a fart.
"Hurst" will never be a big name it only has five letters.
... is a 4-star to Scout (23rd DT in the country), so this would qualify in Sam's eyes as a big commit. My money is on Treadwell and Hurst. Adding to 2 positions of need, allowing us to focus on a few remaining key prospects like Poggi.
Here's how I'd love to see the class finish up, ranked in order of importance.
We still need a stud WR, and some quality DTs. Hust seems like a lock, I feel really good about Treadwell, we still need another stud DT like Poggi (or Pagano, Vanderdoes or Teller). If we can fill those needs, it's really then best available. I'd say we have a 50.50 chance of landing one of Cravens, McQuay, Fuller, Mathis, or Green, but I won't be distraught if we end up being #2 for all of those guys if we can land the three guys above.
Lets get in our Delorean, gun it to 88mph, and skip the offseason and all the misplaced anger that comes with not having much to feed on.
I hope "our" Delorean is modified by circus clowns so that we can all fit.
Dave Brandon is currently equipping the stadium with wheels, suicide doors, and a body kit. He also is painting the whole thing construction site warning vest maize. Only a select few hundred thousand will be picked to go forward to the future.
on Priority Points.
Sounds like realistic expectations might be around this range:
4 - 6 Available Open (Priority to me would be 1-2 WR, 2DT and make room for a Cravens type)
1. Hurst - 80%
2. Treadwell - 65% (I would assume he might be a best available slot as well
3. Poggi - 50/50
4. Harris, Cunningham, name your pick WR - 30% (Unless a visit occurs before LT decision)
5. Fuller/Bain- 20%
6. Cravens/Mathis - 5%
I probably would make Cravens and Mathis's odds about 20% as well. Mathis seems to really like the midwest schools, and I think there is a very solid chance he ends up in the Big Ten. As for Cravens, I don't think he'd spend his own money to make the trip to Michigan and Ohio if there wasn't at least a legitimate shot of him going to a Big Ten team, and I think if he decided to go to a school not in California, he will commit to Michigan.
Also don't leave out McQuay, I think we haev a solid shot with him as well.
I think we have a real shot at Teller too... it's unclear to me where on the line he projects, but he ranks Michigan as one of his top 3.
Penn and Teller?
no more use of the phrase "50/50 chance"
Ty Isaac, EJ Levenberry, Josh Garnett, Armani Reeves...
But 50/50 means you lose roughly as many as you win. Guys like Deveon Smith were also 50/50 and went our way. I also think that of the guys you listed, they were really less than 50/50 with the exception of Isaac. Reeves went with his friend and teammate, Garnett stayed on the West Coast and Levenberry stayed in the South. We had very good shots at those guys, but I don't know if it was even.
Anytime you've got a guy coming from a long way away (Garnett from Washington, Levenberry from Virginia, etc.), you're unlikely to be 50/50.
FWIW, here are the rankings from the 4 main services for LT and Hurst......
Rivals: #5 WR, #31 overall
ESPN: #5 WR, #47 overall
247: #7 WR, #84 overall
Scout: #10 WR, #75 overall
So basically LT is a unanimous top 10 WR and top 84 overall to EVERY service. If that is not elite, i don't know what it.
247: 4*, #19 DT
Scout: 4*, #23 DT, #213 overall
Rivals: 3*, #24 DT
ESPN: 3*, #34 DT
So basically high 3* on 2 services, low 4* on the other 2 services.
My completely uninformed guess is Malik McDowell (to go with Maurice Hurst). If I remember correctly, McDowell was favoring Michigan and his parents wanted him to wait until after his sophomore year to commit. I'd imagine that the school year ends pretty soon.
EDIT: Okay, having read tonight's ESPN chat, I take that back. Nothing was guaranteed (or said very explicitly), but reading between the lines, my money's on Hurst and Treadwell.
