Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Michigan has just offered 2017 Center, Cesar Ruiz who is from Camden. A teammate of Ronald Johnson.

4 star WR Brad Hawkins is also going to be deciding on July 26, his birthday. Michigan picked up a commitment from Brian Cole on July 26 last year.

Think I want to commit on my birthday July 26

He tweeted this when his fellow Camden teammate committed this afternoon

Is Michigan where it's at

If Rutgers couldn't capitalize on their state's recruits before w/ less outside influence, there's no way they're going to now.

Kinda pathetic considering they're the only P5 school right on the Atlantic coast... unless you want to count UConn lol...

Football just became a thing for Temple too so they're no foe.

They've never been able to get the top kids from Jersey. They usually get kids from Florida, DC, and PA who have like Temple, USF, and Vanderbilt offers. I don't really see them threatening the Michigan, Ohio State, and Alabama's of the world for the top guys.

Exactly.  JoePa used to have a stranglehold on the Philly/NJ region with Michigan always able to pluck a recruit or two every year under Bo->Carr...

Wasn't really until the PSU program started its decade-long decline at the end of JoePa that programs like Rutgers started to take some of those kids who'd in the past go to Happy Valley and ride the pine just to say they "played for JoePa" at Penn State.

Love what HARBAUGH is doing in NJ, Florida and at home in Michigan!

EDIT: All below is false and about Mitchell, so disregard.

I would assume Michigan would have to feel good about their chances with him, though they had to feel good about their chances with Kareem until about yesterday; a month is still a long ways off for kids to change their minds making a decision like this.

However, just camped at OSU about a week ago (not sure they have room right now though) and visited ND last week; that's supposedly his top 3. Going to Auburn and Alabama (no offer from either currently) in mid-July, and possibly Friday Night Lights at OSU on July 24.

It's always exciting getting another recruit, especially one has highly touted as Ron Johnson, but where do we start shutting the door on recruits. I know Harbaugh likes his under the radar kids but what happens if they start taking spots away from interested blue-chippers? I'd find it hard to believe Harbaugh would say no to someone like Rashan Gary.

Players that are interested often don't actually come, whereas players that want to come fill up the roster. I agree that some players likely should have a spot reserved from them, but the coaching staff probably "budgets" for that. They mostly fill up the class and then save a couple spots if they have any late deciders like on signing day or an AA game. We can take Mitchell, Upshur and Hawkins and still save room for Gary, Kelly, Kelly, Davis and Bush or another ATH. That cuts it close and we may not have room for everyone, but we can always backtrack scholarships too and have a little extra room this class. Only time will tell.

holding 4-5 open spots until signing day hat dances will always be a crap shoot, particularly w top 100 type prospects out of state (unless its bama or you have the in-state options of usc or florida or whatever).

coaches must not only be very confident re chances w primary targets, but have legit back up options who can 100% add value to the team if top 100 type targets sign elsewhere.  its a tough game.

i could see harbaugh waiting until signing on like 1-2 top prospects (like gary, xavier kelly, etc) but no more than 3 - and given harbaughs personality and his confidence in his staffs ability to coach em up and win games, theyd have to be legit difference makers whove given the staff some positive vibes

Actually, I cannot think of any Michigan commit attributable to the addition of Nebraska to the conference...

Rutgers and Maryland have both added interest and recruits to the fold...

This is a good thing for us.

I have long said that Penn State is a sleeping giant.  Paterno had that program sleepwalking for dedcades.  They are the only major P5 program in the talent-rich area of PA/NJ.  They have advantages like Ohio State does.

It is critical for us to gain momentum in the PA/NJ recruiting area before PSU fully wakes up from the Paterno hangover and the sanctions.  I thought the Hoke disaster killed our chances, but it looks like Harbaugh has arrived on the scene just in time to establish a pipeline into NJ/PA.

PSU is effectively tied with OSU for the best average recruit ranking this cycle in the B1G.  Dont think they are too worried.  Not a Franklin fan but dude can recruit.  MSU and UM are quite a bit behind on ave recruit rank.

yep, ive been saying the same about franklin.  havent checked out their class much but i do know psu has locked down like 6-7 of their top regional OL targets in 15 &16.  franklin will field competitive squads now that theyre moving past sanctions (which should still totally disgust everyone).

plus i saw they signed a defender from dematha whos gonna be a star - would be the perfect buck / wde player at um (though his names escaping me).  harbaughs doing a nice job so far but psu, msu and osu arent going anywhere
