More likely HOFer: John Beilein or Jim Harbaugh

Submitted by Human Torpedo on

This is a discussion I'm sure a lot of us were ready to welcome for about 20 years at least for our respective sport coaches and now it seems plausible to bring it up.

Before you jump all on me and say "Not close it's Harbaugh!" let me just remind you of just how Beilein stacks up: 19 NCAA tourney wins overall (13 at U-M, second to only Fisher with 14), 5 Sweet Sixteens with 3 at U-M, 1 Final Four (Gene Keady got into Naismith HOF with zero), 4 regular season and 3 tourney conference titles across three schools, 508 Division I wins

It may have seemed blasphemous to say this, especially last summer with all the mumblings about Beilein, but I think as of now (things could probably change quickly though) he may actually the closest to the HOF which, to be fair, he should be since he's in the twilight of his career and Harbaugh is so much younger. We knock Beilein's unorthodox approach to building our program all the time, but results have to teams that almost always competitive, and a bunch of teams that have defied expectations

Both will probably make it eventually. I think Harbaugh has at least 12 more years of coaching in him and will continue to field very high level teams. Beilein could make it on volume alone.

I'm assuming he's not retiring after this coming season, but 691 wins, only active coach with 20-win seasons at four collegiate levels, has taken 4 different teams to the D1 tournament, 19 tourney wins, 13 NIT wins, 3x conference coach of the year, and is as clean cut as can be (no scandals).

which sometimes perplexes me since he's so revered by other coaches and commentators. His modest demeanor contrasts sharply with Harbaugh's, but it's like. . . are we really so shallow that we cannot recognize someone who has done so much more with less?

It's looking to me like Beilein has things nicely set up for the next 4-5 years. I'll bet that both he and Harbaugh end up in their respective halls.

It's clearly Harbaugh. Won't know for sure until it's all said and done, but he has the better shot.  The Basketball Hall-of-Fame is just one hall-of-fame for all of basketball at any level.  Beliein is not close to being an all-time great in the sport of basketball.

Beilein has had more NCAA success but Keady has a higher winning percentage. Beilein also won two conference titles at Richmond and Canisius to go along with another 2 NCAA appearances. Still, I'm guessing part of the reason why Keady is a Hall of Famer is because of his longetivity at Purdue, which competes at the highlest level of college basketball. Beilein won't be at Michigan that long and I'm not sure how much weight is given to coaching at mid majors.

Unless Beilein wins a title it's Harbaugh. Jim will win at least one title here and pass Bo and Lloyd in terms of all time Michigan coaches. A top 3 coach in the history of a top 5 program is a lock for HOF.

13 Big Ten titles in 21 years. 11-9-1 against Ohio State. "The team, the team, the team." "A Michigan man will coach Michigan." Only two coaches got to 200 wins faster than Bo. I love Harbaugh, but to blithely predict he will pass Bo at this stage seems woefully premature. Beating Ohio State this year and winning a first Big Ten title would be a nice step in that direction.

DrMantisToboggan

May 16th, 2017 at 2:01 PM ^

Well Jim is currently on pace to get to 200 wins faster than Bo. Bo also never won a national championship. Jim took over the program in a similar state of disarray and instantly changed the culture a la Bo. He's an all-time great innovator. Yeah we are going off a very small sample size, but on his current trajectory he will be regarded on the same level or higher than Bo by the time he retires. Obviously, this is all assuming he remains our head coach until he retires from coaching, which seems to be his plan.

Dana Altman's resume --- except 5 years advanced (older).

Altman doesn't strike me as a Hall-of-Famer.  Very good, but a tier below the elite.  Beilein I think is the same place  - although winning a title could change the conversation.

NittanyFan

May 16th, 2017 at 2:40 PM ^

This is probably the first time I've ever mentioned Altman on any message board.  I solely mentioned him as someone who is somewhat analogous to Beilein.

Making analogies to peers/other Hall of Famers is something that gets done often in "is this guy a Hall of Famer?" conversations.

Keady made the College Basketball Hall of Fame but not the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame (which is the main basketball hall of fame). So it depends on which one you're referring to. Beilein will probably get into the former, not the latter.

DavidP814

May 16th, 2017 at 2:30 PM ^

Eh, I like Beilein's chances for the College Basketball HoF, but the Naismith might be a stretch, barring a national championship before he retires.

The closest comp for other NCAA men's coaches is Gary Williams.  Beilein has more wins and will finish his career with many times more wins than Gary Williams, but Williams has 1 more Final Four than Beilein and a national championship.  I think it takes one of the following to happen for Beilein to make the Naismith HoF:

- Win a national championship.

- Make 2 more Final Fours.

- Coach for 7-8 more years, averaging 20-25 wins/season (so his all-time win total is 850-900).

Accomplish any of the 3 and he's a better than 50/50 shot (especially if he gets a national championship).  Otherwise, I don't think he makes it in.

The Basketball HOF seems to have a much, much lower bar for basketball lifers, but even at that, Beilein has to do more than just be a nice guy with some success turning Michigan around.

AlwaysBlue

May 16th, 2017 at 5:28 PM ^

already says he's more than a nice guy. He's considered to be an offensive genius, regularly hosting NBA coaches to pick his brain. The guy has worked himself up through the ranks without all of the self promoting crap of his peers. I'm not saying he's HOF bound but calling him just a nice guy is an insult.

Belein right now due to sheer amount of wins and success at multiple programs. It also wont hurt that he's known as one of the best player coaches

Harbaughs an amazing coach but anybody who takes off their homer glasses knows he has a lot more work to do before he is a HOF contender. A championship would go a long way but first he needs to start winning Big Ten titles and making the playoffs. Then we can talk Hall of Fame

Perkis-Size Me

Neither are in without winning some kind of national title. Harbaugh especially won't even sniff the HoF if he can't beat OSU.

I know I'm going to get negged for being a buzzkill, and Harbaugh has plenty of time to continue proving himself. But you've got to get past the elephant in the room. If he can't take Meyer down (not saying he can't, just speaking speculatively) and win those truly "big" games, he won't deserve any HoF consideration.

Beilein would deserve at least some consideration if he won it all before he retired. He is the epitome of doing more with less. Consistently beats teams that have far superior talent, has a few conference titles to his name, a tournament title, a Final Four and national title appearance. But without a title, I think he's on the outside looking in. A guy who would be remembered as a very good, sometimes great coach. But not a HoF coach. At the end of the day, you're judged by your hardware.

If I had to pick between the two on who would make it first, I'd say Harbaugh since he has more time to prove himself, and has acheived quite a bit with only one full class worth of "his guys." His teams should continue to get better and challenge for more on a national stage.

DavidP814

May 16th, 2017 at 2:30 PM ^

He absolutely, 100% _can_ beat Urban Meyer.  OSU won essentially a coinflip or worse (for them) game last year.  He had UM in position to win a title in Year 2, he just got unlucky (reverse the results of the NC State and Iowa 35-yd FG attempts--how much different would last season look?).

Stringer Bell

May 16th, 2017 at 2:47 PM ^

Agreed. We had a great deal of bad luck last year. Combine that with a subpar OL and poor QB play down the stretch and its amazing that we were as close to the playoffs as we were. You mentioned NC States missed kick against Clemson, to me that shows that no matter how great your team is, every national champion needs a degree of luck. We had an injured QB last year and still outplayed a healthy OSU team in their house. To think that JH can't beat Meyer is absurd.

Perkis-Size Me

May 16th, 2017 at 2:53 PM ^

I'm not saying he can't, but until he actually does, he has every right to be questioned about it. One of the most experienced, senior-laden teams Michigan has had in years was beaten by one of Meyer's youngest, most inexperienced teams. You can call it bad luck, I call it falling apart in the fourth. Either way, it happened.

Can't tell me that doesn't concern you at least a little bit.

SpikeFan2016

So, if we lose to OSU in November nobody on this board is allowed to site our experience then?

Obviously, I hope (and think we have a pretty decent chance to down them this year), but were Harbaugh to lose in 2017 that would be the least bad loss of the three to OSU because we are going to be so young this year. 2016 was a game we should have won but didn't, 2015 we probably shouldn't have won but we weren't even competitive.

Like it or not, 2016 was a significant underachieving season. We had incredible talent and came up with nothing; third place in the division and lost our bowl game. 2015 was a successful season, 2016 was not.

May 16th, 2017 at 7:56 PM ^

What concerned me was that the refs allowed OSU to mug the Michigan receivers in the fourth quarter (when they were not tackling them before the ball was even thrown).  It was pretty clear to me in the fourth quarter that the refs were not going to let OSU lose.  You are right that the running game couldn't bail the passing game out when the refs neutralized it, and that was on the O-line.  Not sure if there wuldn't have been a bunch of holding calls if the running game was good, though.

Wolfman

May 17th, 2017 at 4:26 AM ^

and I'm speaking about both teams♣  You are not wrong about us falling apart at the time of the game when we should have been putting the finishing touches on a victory.  I agree with you as well as to the fact we set up good, personnel wise,in last year's matchup to make a statement much earlier than many anticipated. However, no matter my knowing we could have won that game easily if we had played the last 10 minutes like the first 50, we would have walked off victorious. Many point to Hoke winning in his first year in Colombus. That team he beat couldn't qualify for entourage duty for  Urb's present team. Hell yes, it was disappointing, but at the same time quite rewarding to know that in two years Jim Harbaugh had closed a gap that was, metaphorically speaking, as wide as is the division between our two political parties today. It's a little difficult to comprehend he has actually achieved this in less than 730 days. How he has accomplished so much so quickly is rehashed below but we are all aware. And just like Coach Harbaugh,  the fans realize there is still a lot of work to be done before we can field a team as equallly talented as OSU does every year. The Michigan  fan base possesses some of the most intellgent fans in the country and we don't make demands of our coach, thinking that a win over a certain team will exorcise all our demons and we'll pisss sunshine and shit lollipops eternally thereafter.

They know when we do beat Urban due to having reaonably equal talent, a full roster, scheduled to replace those we are losing in any certain season with young men who have been exposed to the program, coached by Harbaugh Drveno, Mattison, Brown, Pep, Harbaugh the II, Frey, et al, and as a bonus, we are also returning both our statrjng qb and our wrs on both sides. Many UM fans are putting the onus on Harbaugh, after having only two full recruiting seasons, both of tremendous success, still four years minus Urb at their present positions, " suggesting assignment to the hot seat and equally ignornant statements." Harbaugh is still coaching, probably harder than Meyer, yet when you begin 120 yrds behind the front runner in the 400 meter dash, you have no choice but to keep your head down and attempt to close the gap as much as possible, and in that respect he has been fricking fantastic. He - hats off to assistants as well - have somehow been able to achieve three years work of results in just over two. That's incredible and a mesage to OSu both that , "Hey Urb, you've done a great job, but we're back and by that I mean the program has been totally rebuilit. Know you love a challenge, as do I, so let's boogie."

So Perkis I think at the same time I cannot disagree with the other poster who stated our lack of production did not concern him at all. I thought we would win until Wilton took what appeared to be an extended stride and dropped the ball. At this point what I felt might be ,eemed to be happening - I noticed Jabrill making a horrible decision on the prior defensive sequence- we had gotten away from playing football and reacting to what we were seeing and had begun to think too much, thereby limiting, at least to a degree, our natural tendencies and that is what normally separates great players from the average.

I cannot disagree with him because I remember the head start Urban had, who he inheirited his initial season, of primary importance QB - Miller and TB - Hyde and essentially all he had to do was put his stamp on the team and add to an altready much better than average roster, which he has turned into excellent They were so sar ahead of the conference talent wise, playing down to MSU was the only excitement they gave the conference for about three years  Get an excellent coach add a bunch of five stars and you aren't going to get any worse.

We all know what Harbaugh faced at the same time Urban was enjoying the spoils of the previous regime had to not only find and sign players of the caliber to play with OSU and MSU, he had to do it quickly. He had to intill a winning attitude and he had to somehow restore their confidence to the level it was some three decades earlier, when he was a player in AA and the confidence of the team was second to none in the conference. In other words here are the  jobs of the respective coaches.

Meyer:Working onmaxiimizing the talents of this incredibly gifted team I inherited and am managing to improve the level to a degree its never experienced before, notwithstanding enjoying one of the greatest traditions in the game♣  I, and my entire staff, must take full advantage of this time Jim will be devoting, mainily to the collection of players having the talent to play close to our level so when he does complete that collection, and he will, we'll still have an advantage in that while he is coaching his boys to play at the caliber of ball required in the BIG, we'll be emphasizing aspects of the game, selected shadows of the whole, something he will not be able to do for another couple of years ;. So our mission right now is realize our advantage and maintain it as long as possible.

Harbaugh:  Realize I will have a relatively small number of great players Brady did a great job  recuriting to Michigan  and from those not in the NFL,  we must absolutely get the most out of them we can in the short period of time we will have them. At the same time I must add talent and even more talent so we'll have a fine nucleus each season to build upon, while maintaining a level of work on the recruting path that will bring our talent to the level of OSU's as soon as possible because they are the standard in our league right now. at the same time never slowing down on the recruiting path, adding talent to both increase the number of players and raise drastically the level of play by the team, understanding it cannot be done overnight but have them playing at a perpetual heightened level. We know its unrealistic to expect to be at the level of the Bucks in a few short years while they have enjoyed being lead by one of the greatest there's ever been in Urb.

.  This was definitely not the Michigan football program Jim had left when he signed his first pro contract. And there is no doubt what separated Michigan from the rest of the conference during his playing days was an expectaion, an uinderstanding they had worked harder than their opponent during the week of preparation and because at Michigan, " The only players we offer and grant admission to are among the greatest players in the nation.  We are better than the team in the other dressing room at each and every position. The only way, the only possible way they could walk out of this stadium with a win is if one, just one of you fail to do your job.Because no matter how great we are as individiduals, each play requires the participation of 11 players. And all 11 have to successfully complete their duties on each and every play or the play will fail. You all know this already. We';ve been over it 100s of times. Now just what asshole will be that player that doesnt do his job?  "  total silence, of course.  "Didn't think so. Now lets get out there and end this thing early." They had no doubt whatsoever words the great man was speaking were true. Why should they? They had followed him since the day of his arrival and for his first six years at Michigan he had won more games than any oher coach in the nation. And, or so I've been told, the faith Bo's players had in him, is being realized betweem Harbaugh and his charges. As I stated. we're a fan base of mixed emotions. What the poster, Perkis has stated is being shared by many. However, the number is greater among those who realize the full extent of the job you were entrusted with and we know it will be done. You can only make these assessments based on results. There is only one thing we ask of you and that is what you expect of yourelf and your staff, steady improvement♣ The great thing is both parties know it will be realized

Fully aware you don't read the board, I decided I'd just step in and ask the fans to consider some of the things a head coach is faced withthat fall outside daily public consumption. Mi's program was just as bad as the fan base thought and their anxiety over failure to win in just two short years to a team that normally fields the most or second most talent of any team in the nation is asking just a bit much and although at times, it appears, otherwise, we realize the actual magnitude of your assignmentt and most are amazed at the amount of truly elite players you have been able to entice to AA already. It's an amazing thing, and the fact you have been able to accumulate same from virtually every region in the country where top notch talent is developed is equally impressive.  As difficult as last season's OSU loss was, and it was, the pain that was felt should have taken a back seat to any reasonable fan. A team able to outplay a team that talented being together only two years( as a program) sent a message with far greater positive content than any negative sought out. When we beat OSU the first time under Coach Harbaugh it will represent the fact that we are back no more than last year's loss told any fan that "they wil own us forever." To think otherwise is taking rational thought out of any analysis. And although I did not read the post leading to the one below, it definitely appears to be aimed at Harbaugh. How Harbaugh lost that game for us will always remain a mystery to me. He did not tell  the defender that had OSU's tb pinned 11 yds deep in the backfiled to come in at an angle allowing an easy dip and outside pop reflects for more on superior athletic ability than it does  poor coaching.  I actually thought if any coaching decisions should have been discussed it was the  4th down automatic, "No matter where we are on the football field." Yeah........o.k. but very stupid.

I'm not saying he can't, but

I'm not saying he can't, but until he actually does, he has every right to be questioned about it. You can call it bad luck, I call it falling apart in the fourth. Either way, it happened.

Can't tell me that doesn't concern you at least a little bit.""

Never concerned with a game that is already  over because I cannot alter it while it is still being played. I would only be concerned if I thought that was a representation of all Michigan offensive play going forward, and sir, my stance would actually be a complete opposite. We out duded that team for 50 of 60 minutes, and being allowed the luxury of using that game as a precursor of all game going forward, as suggested by the above, I'll go out on a limb and say Meyer's future qbs will not be able to play at such a pedestrian level n expect to continue their dominance over the wolverines.

IIRC correctly, no matter the talent level we had, that was Brown's first M defense and future defenses, although minus Peppers type players on anannual basis will be manned with the type of players Coach Brown perfers for specific position. Logic, along with 25 years of coaching experience tell me this will better serve us. If not for a bad angle by one of defeders on Samuels11 yards behind the los was a decider, but its part of football and on that all important play superior offensive talent, that will not always be in their favor, prevailed.

I also believe, notwithstanding Wilton's mistakes, he still played well enough for Michigan to win that game. Because I don't believe any gme is a permanent inicator on any giver two tems future performances' when faciing one another, but others do, so I'll counter with similar logic. Wilton's worst game of his career - it wasn't actually - allowed OSU to walk off as winners. However, if he had played the greatest game of his career - shit like that happens - the cfb playoff committee would have had to been publicly slapped for being so dumb the next day due to minuse the turnovers, we dominate the Nuts. So which way you going to go?

Amd like Brown,in building that defense, Harbaugh and offense are still putting an offense together. They will come into a season with an experienced qb, an experienced and effective OL and knock the "dog shit" out of OSU. Yes, OSU was young, They had a year's experience under their belt when they played us. They will grow. We will grow and things will be fun. Have no idea what will happen in '18 or '19 but will admit, if facing OSU with your choice of inexperienced defensive units, I'd go with the one we got. I do think in 19 and probably 20 as well, first Peters, than McCaffrey or Milton and r wide receivers, complemented by a couple hundred from Samuels, think Evans will be gone, will be so psychologically damaging to tne Nuts the following year would be better spent on a therapist's couch than a football field To do otherwise is to do so at their own peril, rememberin how MSU looked after Bama absolutely treated them like step brothers fighting over proceeds from papa's will

And inamuch as computer will be closed for a couple weeks due to headig for Colombia then back to the states, I thought it'd be the best time to post a ridiculously long  post that would draw the ire of al because I won't be able to read the "Wolfman, you mother fucker etc. and you'd all be cool by time i return to the board and remember you all  love me and shit. Basketballs standards for being inducted seem to be the easier to achieve than football. Example being that Yeo Ming was inducted into the Basketball HOF where as Terrell Owens and Roger Craig are not in the Football HOF.
