Better move back in the dorms Kenneth.
Also after watching the tape I was pretty disappointed in his performance Saturday night.

Doesn't the university pay the rent of scholarship athletes? Either way, it doesn't seem right for the newspaper to be reporting on this.
September 14th, 2011 at 7:26 PM ^
How is this any buisness of anyone else except for the tenant & landlord?
September 14th, 2011 at 7:35 PM ^
...but that never stops Ann Arbor dot com, nor does it stop any of the MSM outlets. I don't know when MSM officially became a another way of saying "tabloid," but I miss the old days when they were more responsible.
September 14th, 2011 at 11:29 PM ^
Because they were sued. That's public information. If they had been OSU players, you'd be accusing the media of covering it up.

I think they get a stipend, or whatever you want to call it, for housing. If rent is more than what they get, they have to cover the difference.
September 14th, 2011 at 7:37 PM ^
Lol at you thinking the rent is ever more than the stipend....
September 14th, 2011 at 8:31 PM ^
The stipend is not that much, and it's a "room and board" check, too - it's supposed to pay for their food expenses as well. You basically can't get by on just the stipend in Ann Arbor.

How does this post get upvotes when I can't even understand it? "They get like over $1,000 a month for room and board". Does housing cost $1,000/month or is the players stipend $1,000 month? Why did you need a seven bedroom house for four people? Why is the fact that the house had seven bedrooms at all relevant to the post? Am I illiterate?

Lee Higgins must be a EMU fan or a sparty.
September 14th, 2011 at 7:31 PM ^
at least we know he's not getting impermissible benefits, amirite?
September 14th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
I thought the exact same thing actually. Though I am shocked a football scholarship doesn't cover room and board. I went to the University of Dayton and our basketball players had room and board covered in their scholarship...though that was campus housing I guess
September 14th, 2011 at 7:36 PM ^
Man, leave the poor guy alone. Why post this?
September 14th, 2011 at 7:40 PM ^
I highly doubt any of these news sources have reliable and verifiably accurate information regarding his tennancy situation. I for one would like to see the football program threaten these news sources with blackout if they don't desist from harassing student athletes and reporting hearsay.
September 14th, 2011 at 7:43 PM ^
I agree it is distasteful, but it's public info b/c of the default judgment entered. They probably have someone just searching court records for football player names all year long.
September 14th, 2011 at 7:46 PM ^
but that doesn't mean the football program couldn't fire a shot across the media's bow and stand up for their players to ensure their good name remains untarnished unless they commit a crime or break team rules.

I am no lawyer but arent things like rent private/confidential between tenant and landlord? So my question is, how is this information getting to a media source? I could be wrong but if Demens wanted to and this is confidential information, his landlord and/or the media source could be in some trouble here.
But I am not a lawyer as I said, so I could be way way off
September 14th, 2011 at 8:09 PM ^
Once they file a lawsuit to recoup the money, it then becomes a matter of public record.
September 14th, 2011 at 8:10 PM ^
There is generally no privilege or confidentiality associated with this type of contract. And even if there were, default judgments are just like court rulings (in fact, it IS a court ruling), which is a public record.
That said, I question the value of this story (though not enough to pull it down at this point).

If it's in the courts it is public knowledge
September 14th, 2011 at 7:44 PM ^
How the hell do you go that long without paying rent? It's not that hard. Budget out whatever rent is, spend the rest.
September 14th, 2011 at 7:45 PM ^
Pryor wouldn't have any of these problems.
September 14th, 2011 at 7:54 PM ^
Is this REALLY our business, even if the default judgment would make it public record? Is it REALLY necessary to smear this across the Internet, however the situation arose?
September 14th, 2011 at 11:47 PM ^
Everybody messes up on rent once in a while when times are tough, it's not the enc of the world. In fact it's nobody's damn business and I'm shocked that this was a discussion topic. What's next Kenny Demens leaves dishes in sink for roommate to clean up?
September 16th, 2011 at 3:01 AM ^
September 14th, 2011 at 8:09 PM ^
This isn't good news. There was speclulation last year that Demens lost playing time because of this issue. I'm not going to speculate on how Hoke will handle this, but I don't think he's going to ignore it.
September 14th, 2011 at 9:16 PM ^
but I hope he doesn't punish him, depending on what the real story is. If he isn't paying his rent it might be a number of personal or family factors, I'm not sure there is anything Hoke could or should do. I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable with the head coach punishing his player for not being able to pay his bills... if he doesn't have the money he doesn't have the money. But I am sure that Coach Hoke will be asking questions to figure out what the real story is.

Kenny went to Detroit Country Day...he should have the mula right?
September 14th, 2011 at 8:47 PM ^
Scholarships are available there so I wouldn't jump to any conclusions one way or the other.
September 14th, 2011 at 9:14 PM ^
Technically, I don't think high schools are "allowed" to give athletic scholarships
September 14th, 2011 at 9:22 PM ^
private schools can and do give needs based tuition assistance. it is not based on athletics. I have also seen academic scholarships at high schools.

That was his conundrum
September 14th, 2011 at 8:30 PM ^
quit faulting the media like a bunch of cooler poopers. demens not paying his rent is the problem here. dude is our best/only option at MLB, so he better get his shit together.
September 14th, 2011 at 9:08 PM ^
What I don't get is what he was doing living in Briar Cove- that is one of the most expensive places in the area. I lived there for a year but had to move because the rent was just "too damn high" after they were going to up my rent for year 2. And even that adjusted rent wasn't as much as Demens was being charged! And I actually have a decent paying job, not a college student.
I hope he gets this all cleared up and moves into a more affordable complex, even if it isn't quite as nice.
September 14th, 2011 at 9:10 PM ^
is too damn high, you say?
September 15th, 2011 at 9:45 AM ^
2nd bedroom demens - 400 a mo and ill drop you off before work at Hill and State Street. lol.
September 14th, 2011 at 9:13 PM ^
He did go to Country Day, you know. I'm sure his rent can't compare to the 25k a year for tuition
September 15th, 2011 at 3:29 PM ^
are they actually paying that 25k or are they getting "academic scholarships".

September 14th, 2011 at 11:48 PM ^
Get a loan or find some guys on the team who may have extra rooms in the house or apartment they are renting. This would save $$
September 15th, 2011 at 5:43 AM ^
Sorry if I'm wrong but isn't this in the rules for things we aren't supposed to talk about?
