More info on the Iron D trophy

Submitted by mgofro on

UM hockey coach Red Berenson and MSU coach Tom Anastos visited the Nordins' studio earlier this month to help forge the trophy centerpiece, which is a 1½-inch thick iron letter “D.”

Most of the trophy is stainless steel, but the “D” is hand-forged carbon steel, Nordin said. Other elements of the trophy will be a cup and the base will list the winners of the game from each season. Details on the trophy will represent the game of hockey, both universities, the city of Detroit and the new Red Wings arena now under construction downtown.

Trophies need to have an authentic flavor.  They should have gone to an abandoned building, ripped out a couple of rusty old pipes, and welded them together into a "D".  I would want to play for that.

take a shot as to your objections, as follows: Michigan and Michigan State have played each other at least 4 times a year, each year, for at least 60-70 years. This does include when they meet each other in the GLI, CCHA or Big Ten playoffs. So, the only thing that makes this trophy unique is the fact that it is awarded to the winning team of the single game that is now played in Detroit during the regular season. This single game played in Detroit is a relatively new thing, and there is no reason for either team to value a win there over any of the other 3 games between the 2 teams in the series. Except for the fact that this game is in Detroit, which nobody cares about, except for the promoters of the game in Detroit. This is about as manufactured (by a 3rd party) of a trophy game as there could be one.

This trophy sucks.  Playing the game at a neutral site sucks too.  I say bring the game back to Yost (or to Munn for that matter) and to let the Red Wings keep the trophy.  Or we can send the trophy to Soldier Field.  The Paul Bunyan trophy can go with it.

how long it will take normal rust oxidation to reduce the 1 1/2 inch D to a pile of rubble, stumbled upon a fascinating site - Mothcam, so you can check on the Mothman statue in Point Pleasant, WV, any time you'd like.  Looks like it is snowing down there now.

Back to the original quest, sheesh can't find quick answers on something like this - maybe an MSE out there knows it.  So I'll say in 100 years of sitting around ice rinks this D will be gone.
