More Info on Carvin
Per the The Times Picayune:
Carvin also had an offers from Colorado and SMU and this from his head coach: He is fully qualified academically with both the necessary core curriculum grade-point-average and test score, Roth said.

Be great if he could be an EE and get in here so he could get some reps in during spring and see him in action. Thanks for the info.

At first, I thought you wanted him to major in Electrical Engineering...the scary part is I thought that would be a good idea for a second.

There's gotta be some correlation between analog circuit design and being a defensive back right?
November 4th, 2009 at 11:09 AM ^
It has yet to be determined if being a good EE designer leads you to read defenses or if the ability to play Cover-3 promotes efficient circuit design. Hopefully it's the former.

Interesting post on the rivals free board from someone claiming to be a coach on Carvin's team. Talks about how he is a "football player", and that Pacman Jones recommended the kid to RichRod.

...is that he appears to be a Division I player. A sleeper along the lines of Brandent Engleman (sp?), hopefully with more upside.

Great find. Like MWW6T7 wrote, I hope he enrolls early so that he can compete for playing time next season.

who can get in for early enrollment with no issues as opposed to a 4-star who we have to sweat eligibility on until Fall practice.

leap from High School to D1 is huge. As RR has said, you try to recruit the right guys, and develop them. So, if you have a heady, athletic, "right-sized" player in the right position, that's about all you can hope for coming in. Sounds like this kid has the tools to be molded into a fine safety.
As far as I'm concerned, I'm not too impressed with the Rivals rankings relative to T. Pyor. He seems like an intensive project with an attitude problem that may never live up to the hype.
Give me a kid with "humble confidence" any day!

Always good to get players to can qualify.
That's not sarcasm.

over an elite player who thinks they are entitled to success without sweat.
I really like this Carvin Johnson character and I think he will pan out here. (crossing fingers)

Not that I don't love 4 and 5 star blue chip athletes but there is something great about seeing a kid come here and work his ass off to be the best he can be and not feel as though he is automatically gonna be inserted into the lineup based on his scout/rivals hype. Hopefully Johnson will be one of those kids. I think the way RR has handled some of the cb positions and Ezeh this year will help shrink some egos once kids get on campus as well. You either put in the effort and time to play your position or someone else will!

It doesn't make sense, but whenever I read Carvin I think I'm seeing Carville. Can you imagine seeing this guy in a winged helmet?
November 4th, 2009 at 11:11 AM ^
Doesn't need the helmet. Just paint the wings directly on his head.

I live in New Orleans and I almost hit him with my car last year as he was crossing a busy intersection. Had he been wearing a the winged-helmet I would have seen him sooner.

Damn you pack and pinion steering!!!!

I thought of Eric Cartman. He's look pretty funny in a UM uni.

Louisiana is considered one of the more talent rich states in the country and New Orleans (and its suburbs)are not backwater bayou villages a la Waterboy. So how does a very talented kid from NOLA go unnoticed? Of course you could say he isn't talented and that is why he wasn't noticed, but assuming he does have skills how do you fly under the radar in a major talent hotbed? Too many other talented players?

not going to camps and combines, not having your parents pay somebody to put highlight films of you on the web, and by going to a high school that does not regularly produce D-I talent so that the HS coach is not particularly connected to the college coaching crowd.

As someone who never played HS football and didn't come from a big time HS football program (Go Berkley, Go Bears!), I never really understood how the system worked. Thanks for the insight.

Ran across the above on youtube which features a teammate of his from last year. He draws a few "oohs" from the crowd around 0:50 for his hit on the opposing QB. He wears jersey number 1 according to MaxPreps.

That is a wicked hit!!!!!
I'm pretty stoked for this kid!!
When I first read the news about his commitment at work this morning, I was like, "Jeez... not again" due to his lack of stars.
Now I'm really excited about him though. He sounds like a really good kid. I think the fact that so many local peeps who know him have made it a point to come out of the woodwork today and sing his praises really speaks volumes.
Excited he's coming to M and hope he does well!
