More expansion rumors

Just got this link from the Aggie sitting next to me (who has loved the idea of joining the Big Ten from the start - at least someone down here realizes how awesome it is in the Big Ten! :)

http://www.kctv5.com/sports/23860558/detail.html

Basically - UT & A&M join and somehow avoid the Tech and Baylor problems while OU joins the SEC.

Totally not at all likely but, ya know, nothing wrong with hoping!

I might need to adjust my tinfoil, but I can't help but notice this comes from a Kansas station.  Kansas and K-State stand to get left out in the cold should the Texas 6 bail to the PAC 10, so there is an incentive to Kansas to drive a wedge and suspicion between members of the Texas 6.  I'm likely paranoid though.

Do not want A&M though.  I'd rather that creepy Corp of Cadets never have a reason to travel to AA.  I'd take Tech over A&M, Tech can go chill in the basement with some other programs anbd their fans won't be as weird.

First of all I hope this is false. I don't want Texas. The way they came in like gang busters and stole the Big 8's pudding scares me. I don't us to get rolled over like Nebraska did.

Secondly although A&M is basically Texas' version of Sparty they would be the only other Texas school to come in the Big 10. They are an AAU member and have very solid academics. I believe Texas Tech is a tier 3 school.

They are more like PSU and Pitt - while A&M is having a rough go of it football wise lately I wouldn't insult them down to the level of Sparty - that's just harsh!

Tech is a 100% non-starter and really the only reason the Big Ten would never take UT or A&M is because of the strings attached to Tech.

More interestingly in all of this is that there would be 6 teams left in the current Big 12 which is the min to retain the auto BCS bid - in this scenario there'd be absolutely no reason at all for OU to jump ship because they'd be almost assured of a BCS bowl bid for years on end.  So then you'd have 7 and assume they could easily get BYU, Utah and TCU and there's a pretty decent conference (comparitively speaking) with an auto-BCS bid.

Sure, A&M has a more conservative history and, generally speaking, more conservative students but I don't think we should keep them out because of the Corp - that seems rather stupid (yeah, I know Corp people are weird but, seriously, how many "normal" people go to MSU/OSU?)

So were you one of those Granada Invasion protestors I had to push past (in uniform) on the Diag on my way to NROTC drills in 1983? (That was an interesting experience for a freshman.)

I know a couple of ex-cadets. The Corp is a little over the top "motivation"-wise for my taste. Smacks of a Texas militia. But the two guys I know are great guys (and actually pretty normal).

Either way, A&M is the third highest ranked Big 12 university academically (behind Texas and Colorado). Nebraska is 5th, Missouri 7th, Texas Tech 10th.

let me clear up some misconceptions.

A&M has very solid academics. It's not like Michigan vs. MSU where if you get into UM, you don't goto MSU. UT and A&M have comparable academics - you choose your school based on your major.

UT does have a better athletic program than A&M, but not by much. Over the past 4 years, they've split football games and basketball games. The difference is that UT's dept brings in more money because A&M's dept doesn't handle its finances too well and UT is more marketable.

Although both are flagship universities, the average non-college educated TX resident is more likely to go buy a UT shirt/hat. UT is the sexier of the two universities (insert cow-love joke here). So, UT is more likely to land big recruits. Well, that and Mack Brown is a recruiting machine.

Sooo, in conclusion: both universities would be great additions to any conference. It's not like A&M is anything remotely like the "tech problem." For me, the only downside of them joining the Big10 is that I'd have to root against A&M when they play Michigan.

Disagree re: A&M. Solid academics, solid football/athletics, etc., far, far better school academically and athletically than TTU. It's not even close. And the Big Ten won't take TTU.

I don't know how much credence to lend this report, but if it were true, what a hell of a fast one by UT, A&M, and the Big Ten. I'd imagine we'd take Nebraska as the 14th, and then either stand pat, or take ND and a Big East school. I kinda have a pipe dream, though, of just ND, NU, and UT, but that doesn't seem likely given the way the situation is working itself out.

To be fair, we weren't exactly filled with warm thoughts about CWebb, Mo Taylor, Lou Bullock and Tractor Traylor when the Ed Martin shit hit the fan in Ann Arbor.  It's not unreasonable for USC fans to feel like the school is getting screwed for the misdeeds of a few former scholarship athletes.

It certainly seems like Pete Carroll et al should've known the cash was flowing, but people have said the same things about Steve Fisher & Ed Martin's boys in Ann Arbor.

As for Tim Floyd, it appears he handed envelopes of money to Guillory to deliver to OJ Mayo, so that's pretty damn blatant.

However you slice it, USC is getting shanked by the NCAA, their fans are pissed, and we're really not ones to talk, having seen and said the same things when MSC yanked down banners, forfeited wins, and repaid NCAA tournament revenues received.

All that said, I'm still exceedingly pleased at the Trojans' long-overdue comeuppance.

Both of these are solid academic schools with great football tradition.  I see no negative to adding both of them...just wonder how it will politically play.  Does Tech and Baylor really have that much political pull?  I don't think so.  We know financial and prestige-wise, a move to the Big 10 would be their best choice.

If they don't accept I'm content with 14 solid teams with no reallu weak fillers (like a Rutgers). If they accept, Missouri would be feasible 16th team and the conference would be absurd.

Notre Dame, Texas, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State. My god, that is absurd. Yea some of those teams (us) sort of suck right now, but those six in one conference is ridiculous. Make it happen!

Does Nebraska get Delany's ear as to what other schools should be offered?  If Osborne pushed to leave the B12 in order to get away from Texas and their silly favoritism within the conference does Nebraska really want to join the B10 only to have Texas follow?  Perhaps Osborne has told Delany Nebraska will join as long as guaranteed that Texas will not be offered.

Nebraska doesn't like the unequal revenue sharing or the extreme balance of power issues in the Big 12.  Neither are an issue with the Big 10.

It's all John Navarre's fault.

because they voted for the unequal revenue sharing. That is my problem. They voted, found out the screwed themselves, and now want out because Texas is dwarfing them. They were fine with unequal revenue and power as long as they had the most of both.

All four twitters saying that KU, KSU, ISU, and MU are talking with the big East to form a super conference. That basketball conference would be ridiculous. Nothing would touch it. That could be a 10 bid league in basketball. Football, maybe not so much, but hey, we'll take it. I think that would be 16 and 20 teams correct?  I could roll with that.

but ATown wouldn't put it up if he didn't have a little something else I don't believe. I don't know much about CloneChronicles, but I believe they are usually pretty conservative.

The one thing that does bother me is that the person with the most inside knowledge has said nothing on this. Actually the two most inside people. This could be just another rumor, but ATown is usually solid. Phog also reported KU met with Big East officials today. '

In no way am I saying this is extremely solid, just another possibility.
