More Denard Statistical Insanity: #3 in NCAA in Pass Efficiency!

Submitted by Communist Football on

You already knew that Denard is rocketing towards obliterating the single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback (he only has to average 84 yards a game rushing over the next 7 to break the record). But check this out:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics

Denard is leading the nation in rushing: by ALMOST 200 YARDS!  He is #1 at 905; LaMichael James of Oregon is second with 712.

Amazingly enough, on top of his ridiculous rushing totals, he is #3 in the NCAA in passing efficiency at 180.0 (Cam Newton is at 191.4; Dan Persa is at 184.6).

I don't even know how to process the fact that the same guy who is leading the nation in rushing by 200 yards is also #3 in the country in pass efficiency. It is simply unfathomable.

While all these stats are amazing, they don't all need their own thread.  This could have easily been a comment in the three other stats threads in the past 24 hours.

I don't associate myself with that sort of thing.  On the other hand, I was trying to make a point about Denard's passing efficiency -- surely that is worthy of its own thread.

Could I have been more specific in the thread title?  Sure.  Could I have emphasized the passing more to distinguish that I was making a point separate from that of other threads?  Sure.

On the other hand -- what is the proportion of MGoBoard posts that complain about another post being redundant, inappropriate, or whatever?  If you don't think the post is interesting, because its subject seems redundant...no one is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to read it?

I fully appreciate the need for conventions and norms.  But there is a balance between censoring those who deserve it and constantly scolding those whose offenses are, in the grand scheme of things, relatively modest.

There are just too many "moderators" on here...well then, we could just have one thread titled "Michigan football opinions"...yes? I really enjoy this entire site all the time..as long as youre not being a complete DB all comments and threads are welcomed by me...live and learn I guess.

Off soapbox now.

Denard's helped out a lot in pass efficiency because he throws to a lot of wide open receivers who can rack up significant gains because opponents have to sell out for the run. This allows many pass plays to go for more yards than they otherwise should. This is one of the things that makes Denard freakishly good, but it should be noted that Denard's pass efficiency is not independent from his running ability when having this discussion.

Which just goes to show that it makes more sense to have a QB that can run than to have a statue back there.

Incidentally, Dan Persa (#2 in efficiency) can run himself - he had over 100 rush yards against Minn yesterday.

some teams look better or worse than they actually perform in any given game!  yet you 'still play the game'!  DRob still has to throw a good pass and the recievers still have to catch them. GO BLUE BEAT green!

Denard Robinson isn't just the first to get 200+rushing/200+passing in 2 games.  Even better than that, he's the first player in history to AVERAGE over 200 yards rushing, 200 yards passing over multiple games.

Check out an old thread entitled "Beaver Gone.  To Conference USA."  it is about Shavodrick Beaver's decision to decomitt and enroll at Tulsa.  We were left to try to recuit some guy from Florida named Denard Robinson.  (Yours truly made a speculation filled comment about why, oh why, would a guy choose to go to Tusla over Michigan.  Like, wow, can I edit that?)  Beaver's stats as of 10/2/10 were 18 rushes for 86 yards and 3 of  5 passing for 60 yards, 0 TDs and a pick.  So it looks like this all worked out OK, huh?

But speaking of stats... there's been a lot of "Denard needs his Steve Slaton in the backfield before this offense can truly sing."

Slaton was a special player - not saying we have his equivalent on this current roster - but if our primary RB was 19th in the nation in rushing with 497 yards, averaging 5.1/carry, and had 9 TDs (tied for first in the nation), we might not hear that "where's Slaton" talk.  Those are Shaw and V Smith's stats combined.  Again, not saying defenses respect our two-headed RB starters the way they had to respect Slaton or Devine, just pointing it out.

I like to think of Denard like with giant eagles wings, and singin' lead vocals for Lynyrd Skynyrd with like an angel band and I'm in the front row and I'm hammered drunk!
