Moorman and Kelly updates from Detnews

Submitted by 93Grad on

Cliffnotes version:  Moorman would listen if Michigan called, but has not heard anything yet and Kelly would like to schedule an official visit to Michigan but it hasn't happened yet either.

Moorman is a guy I wanted us to look at for awhile.  Top lineman in the state, arguably, and he has the Wisconsin seal of approval.  Plus we need another OL with Bosch leaving.

Kelly is another guy that would be nice to land.  Plays either RB or DB, both of which are areas of need and he seems like a Harbaugh kind of kid.  Hope it happens.

That's absolutely not true. Garnett is a starter at Stanford. Alex Kozan is a starter at Auburn. Stefon Diggs has had injury problems and just announced that he was leaving Maryland after his junior year; NFL Draft Scout lists him as the #7 wide receiver. Ronald Johnson got drafted. Sean Parker had 11 interceptions in four years at Washington.

Kris Frost was third on his team in tackles this year, second in tackles for loss, and tied for first in sacks.

what needs to happen now is to finalize the entire coaching staff and get that done.  It seems like with most of the staff not being announced formally, that things may be still "a bit up in the air" in the minds of some recruits.  For example, I'd think that whomever is giong to be handling DL and LB needs to be set for sure.  Maybe they're telling recruits something concrete, but if they are, it hasn't come out in any tweets or other sources.

Its hard to get guys to commit when your only contact has been a phone call or text. When the dead period ends and we start to visit guys we should start to get some commits. I just hope everyone keeps their expectations in check and aren't surprised to have the remaining slots filled up with mostly 3 star guys (minus Clark and maybe Wheatley).

We are still in the Dead Period in recruiting (that ends this Thursday), but somehow you thought that kids would commit to JH just because he tweets them or calls them.  JH is going to be good, but....... lets keep ourselves in check.

Offical visits start this weekend.  Commits will start happening then (or shortly there after), with only  a few spots available (6-8?) they will evaproate rather quickly.

I played football with Moorman in high school and firmly believe if offered he would commit here. Obviously I'm biased because he was a friend of mine but the kid can just flat out play. I think he has the type of mentality that could really fit well with our new coaching staff and would be a huge pickup.

Yeah, he's been a full time starter since his sophomore year for us and played in a couple games his freshman year if my memory serves me right. Ever since his first day of practice on varsity the coaches were very high on him. Moorman is Ladach's (the head coach at Northville now) first truly big name player there.

I'm sure that things are "finalized" behind the scenes and those coaches are in contact with recruits. There is probably some lag time from when hires are agreed to and when they make the official announcements, probably some logistical HR type stuff.

Newsome is a tackle all the way, and Runyan could likely play either.  I think Moorman falls into that same category as Runyan.

Is our current depth skewed toward guards?  Our starting tackles this past fall were a frosh and a soph, with their backups being Magnuson and Dawson, two more sophomores.  JBB and LTT were behind them.

Our current depth isn't skewed toward guards. We have Cole, Braden, Magnuson, Logan Tuley-Tillman, Juwann Bushell-Beatty, and then Grant Newsome coming in. That's not to mention someone like David Dawson, who could play virtually anywhere on the line.

I have lower expectations for this year's class. It is late in the recruiting process to sway most of the big names. I think we will see the coaching hires have the greatest  impact on 2016 recruits, even more so on 2017. I assume there is a longer courtship than one would expect especially for those recruits who were not life-long Michigan fans  Despite its small size, I wouldn't be surprised to see Michigan bank a few scholarships rather than just get warm bodies in there.

Gotta to love the "I am 100% committed to Wisconsin" but am keeping my options open.  I appreciate that he's 18 years old, but keeping your options open is kinda the opposite of 100% committed.

And just why do we think Kelly is particularly Harbaugh's kind of guy?
