Monty Madaris to visit Michigan

Submitted by Lancer on

From a Mike Dyer tweet...

"Moeller senior WR Monty Madaris to take official visit to Michigan the weekend of Jan. 13, says family"

Will the coaching staff take another WR, assuming Chesson commits this week?
Jan 13 is also the same day Diamond and Wright will be on their officials.

I think most would prefer Madaris to Chesson, but not by much.  Madaris is as tall as Chesson, a little beefier and just as fast.  Madaris also has the better offer list of the two, with offers from Florida State and Nebraska in addition to us and Sparty.

Plus, I would prefer Madaris if only because it meant he wouldn't go to MSU.  Chesson would go to Mizzou or Iowa instead of M.

I agree that the offers for Madaris are impressive, but I think the Okie State and Missouri offers are better than they are being given credit for. Also just watching the highlight reels Chesson just looks like more of  wide reciever to my eyes. Madaris seems good, but I think he fits more of a slot role, which we have plenty of.

Out of curiosity, why do you think the OK St. and Mizzou offers are better than people think?  Even though OK St. has a good team this year and recruited a very good WR in Blackmon a few years ago, doesn't mean that every WR they offer is good.  I think MSU, FSU and Nebraska can be pickier with their offers than OK St and Mizzou.

Also - Madaris is 6'2", so I'm not sure what you mean when you say he looks like a slot and we have many of those.  We have two slot receivers on the roster, and they're both 5'9"ish.

I'll address the slot part first, by that I meant he runs a lot of crossing routes, screens and slants, and some of his best work is after the catch. He is taller, but he reminds me of a really poor man's Breaston. I'm not a football guru or anything so I'm not going to claim that my opinion holds that much weight.

On the offers bit, I think both of those schools have shown to be good evaluators of talent recently. Although Blackmon is the number one target, they also have very good players in Tracy Moore and Josh Cooper. The also have a history of other good recievers like Dez Bryant and Dajuan Woods, though Bryant was higher rated than Blackmon and Woods who were  3 stasr and the 58th  and 90th ranked WRs respectively.

Meanwhile, Mizzou has had a couple 1000 yard recievers and a few that went over 1500. Denario Alexander went for 1791 in 2009. Of course, there's also Jeremy Maclin, who was another three star guy. I know both of these programs are spread and shread, but you don't go for 1000 yards in the Big 12 if you're untalented. I think both of these teams have found very talented 3 star player that have turned into stars.

P.S. all my rankings and stars are from Scout

Don't mind me...I have no opinion on this discussion (hell I was the one that asked the question)...

But this exchange is what this board should be about. Someone challenging an opinion and someone defending it respectfully.

Well done to both posters. Too much bitching, not enough of what I just read.

Looks like coaching staff is trying to get all the remaining targets who haven't taken officials yet in on that weekend.

As for if we take him or not if Chesson commits, we'll likely know more closer to the time. Depends a lot on what coaches still see as needs and if they think Madaris is a great enough talent to be a best-guy-available type...

Strange to think that after WR being the huge hole in the class for so long it appears there's a possibility of landing 3 if need be.  I agree with most that there seems to be bigger needs, and potential commits that are ranked higher, but I still wouldn't mind seeing a solid 3 player class of WR considering what we're losing and the complete lack of WR in the previous class.

given the time constraints of his visit, do you think Michigan's coaches will actually get to see the full Monty?

EDIT:  When I wrote this I actually forgot about all of the crap that has been going on at Penn State.  Please forgive me and, yeah, a bazillion minuses.
