Momma Gwen Appreciation !

Submitted by Wal-Mart Wolverine on

I have to imagine that "Momma Gwen" had a hand in landing a lot of our recruits this cycle as well as last year. Big shout out to her, winning over the recruits parents and extolling all the virtues of going to Michigan.

I think Solomon and his mom specifically referenced her as a big reason why they liked Michigan so much. But don't tell MSU fans that, they still think we hired her just to get her son to come here.

I love how every one of these hires our rivals think were made for ulterior reasons ends up actually being really good at their jobs.

Jay Harbaugh, Chris Partridge, Mama Gwen, Biff Poggi, Devin Bush Sr, even Wheatley Sr... they all end up being exceptionally qualified and capable in their roles.

Bad OP: I have to imagine she did things.

Good OP: She was key in convincing Solomon and DPJ's moms that Michigan was the best place for their kids.

in the You Tube search and check the circus going on around the country today. You will find out why I am not worried who is getting in this country as much as I am worried how to get some people out of it.

Good in theory, but bad in practice.  Imagine, for example, who the following teams would hire:

  • Louisville (Bull Durham vintage Susan Sarandon type)
  • Miami (Scarface era Michelle Pfeiffer type)
  • SMU (Random madame grieving loss of 5 of her girls - allegedly)
  • Notre Dame (Margaret Hamilton type (Witch o' West version, not coffee version))
  • UNLV (So so many retired hookers)
  • Ohio State (Urbz ex-Grad Student asst - as part of out-of-court settlement)

For the life of me, I can't remember his name . . . but there is someone on staff who has counselled and encouraged many players over the years on the football team an other teams. This gentleman and his wife have been critical. There actually are a number of folks like this who have been critical. The coaching, the team, the physical facilities, are all great. But some of the support staff have played a huge role in recruiting players to Michigan.

You are correct. Greg and his wife and Gwen and many others are critical. There is definitely a spiritual component to this . . . there are some on the team (no idea how many . . .  none of my business) but there are some, and particularly moms, who want to know about churches and support climate and whether or not everything is hookers and blow. I actually think that JH with his own private but staunch spiritual beliefs fits very well with this. I'm too tired and lazy to look it up, but I recall that this was also a critical factor with Rashan Gary. Because of board rules, even when guys share this, it isn't covered at mgoblog extensively. But it is there. Drugs and Alcohol and sex is everywhere in society. There are some that want to know they'll be ok when that isn't what is driving them.

with membership in the BIG pilers a player from Bowling Green? It is somehwhat more digestable, but only to a small degree, when you realize in so doing, they were able to leapfrog BG and finish a place above them in final recruiting rankings.

and way ahead of the curve before his professional colleagues and their fans will give him his due.  He only makes hires, based on what he deems will have a positive, hopefully long term impact on the program he's trying to return to the elite of college football. It's hard to blame someone for a level of cynicism in reaction to a head coach, especially one with his reputation, making a move deemed out of the ordinary. The job offer was only after Wayne had submitted his transfer request and was a result of Jim remembering how thorough she had been in her questioning when he was recruiting Wayne while at Stanford. Her background and experience in education, from educator to principal with a thorough understanding of the recruiting process, she was an ideal candidate for Director of Player Development.

And like the majority of Harbaugh hires, it doesn't take long for the public to learn what the recruits and their parents come to understand. She is very good at her job and remembering full well all the concerns she had for her son that weren't related to actual on-field activities, she quickly turns that concern into comfort at knowing that while Harbaugh and his staff will do all they can to produce wins on the field, it will come with an equal and genuine concern for their oveall welfare and emphasis on academics and molding a young man that will leave Michigan ready for the next chapter in his life, armed with what's important to achieve that and hopefully a Michigan degree.  She has been a tremendous addition.

Michigan is truly starting to shine. The Michigan we knew was there, just needed some Jim loving and polishing. These tremendous people he is building into the program are amazing people and gifted professionals. Jim is an innovator that came back to freshen up an old American staple and icon. We're back bitches! With that being said, Sparty is really going down the tubes, all the Green people in my life are like the walking dead. With nothing to say and can't look me in the face when talking college sports. They know it is over. Hope they enjoyed the "Miracle at the Big House", because it's going to be the Dantonio sodomy hour from now on. I actually got a point where I hated Sparty more than OSU. My kids are young and say, "Ewww, green!" To anything green. The word "green" is a dirty word in our house and we have no clothing the color green. For real. The kids grew up through our tough years so I don't blame them. Now it's back to focusing hate for the over-signing, processing shit hole called OSU. God I love being a Wolverine... Now... Ask me 3 years ago, may have been a different story.
