A modest proposal

Can we please stop using time and energy defending/attacking Rich Rod?

He is no longer part of our football program.  We should adopt one of RichRod's classic motifs and only talk about the people relevant to our football program.  Quite frankly, it doesn't matter anymore, and I think I speak for a lot of people when I say I don't give two shits about what you have to say about him.  (This also means you, Brian)

Instead, let's focus on our current coaches, our current players, and go out there and support our football team.  Otherwise, we will have the same rift in our fanbase as we had during the RichRod era.  I don't know if any of you have realized, but it has not gotten better, at least not on mgoblog, and a lot of this is because of the subject matter coming from the top.

I know that this isn't exactly a novel post and it doesn't have any new information, but this place has been in shambles lately and I can't click on an MGoBoard topic without being assaulted by RR debate.

I certainly don't think I have the right to tell anyone what to do, but PLEASE consider this next time you find some quote you don't like or some article vaguely referring to RR:  it is most likely an extension of the same drivel we've all been talking about for months now.

Now let's gather up the pieces of our football program and do something constructive with it.

Also, neg away if you must.  Luckily I have discovered neg invulnerability

EDIT:  I apologize if I came off strong but I was just rather annoyed when I wrote this.  By no means do I have the right to tell you or Brian what to do.  I feel that bye-gones should be bye-gones.  The RR era was painful for many and there is no need to re open the wound every time an alumnus says something about it.

I also reserve my right to criticize any media writer, and I'm sure Brian would agree that it is ok to do so.

Dude

For all of us, sure, fine, whatevs.

But if you don't care what Brian thinks... what are you doing on his site?  What on earth makes you think you have the right to tell him what he can and cannot say HERE?

Just something for him to

Just something for him to consider.  Like I said, I don't have the right to tell him what to do.  But for the love of God I don't want to read another post about how someone said something mean about RR somewhere in the world.  It just does not matter.

No referencing the past?  No

No referencing the past?  No RR?  That also means no Bo, Carr, Yost, ect.  Right?  As far as i'm concerned, this is a place to talk Michigan football.  Present and past.  It's also a site that allows debate and great conversation.  Just don't read posts about RR if you don't like it.

Indeed.  I sort of built a reputation on referencing the past.  The good kind, at least.

The last 3 years and both sides of the RR argument are really starting to do a number on my psyche.  The problem is so easily solved by avoiding the threads you don't want to read about.

I personally would like to go back to eating popcorn over the Tressel threads.

Novel ideas how to avoid RR posts:

1) stay off MGoBlog

or

2) don't read the posts that have anything to do with RR if you do accidentally (oops!) find yourself on MGoBlog

it's Brian's site, and he shall decide what he does and does not want to write about... doubtful your whining will matter one iota to him

Have you tried reading any Christian blogs since you love God so much?  Probably less Rich Rod he said she said there.

I suspect that Brian is just fine with disagreement as long as the response is logical.  I don't always agree with everything Brian writes, but so what?  This is Michigan...we discuss and debate things in painful detail and sometimes almost forever.

Awww yeah

Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • 2 sticks butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 10 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 package Oreo cookies – I used Double Stuf

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugars. Add in the eggs and vanilla and mix until well combined.

In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add to the wet mixture and combine thoroughly. Stir in the chocolate chips.

Chill the dough for 15 minutes to make it easier to work with and to keep the dough from spreading when baking.

Using a cookie scoop place one scoop of dough on top of an Oreo cookie. Place another single scoop on the bottom of the Oreo to create a cookie sandwich. Seal the edges together to completely close in the Oreo.

Place the balls of cookie dough on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 9-13 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes and then transfer to a wire rack.

Aww Yeah. Passover Recipe!

SIMPLE FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE CAKE

4 oz. semi-sweet chocolate or chips

1 stick margarine

¾ cup sugar

3 large eggs

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 TB Cointreau or Kahlua, if desired

Preheat overn to 375 degrees.  Grease 8 inch round spring-form baking pan.  Cut wax paper to fit into pan and grease.  Melt chocolate and margarine together in microwave at 80% power for 2 minutes.  Remove and whisk until blended and shiny.  Whisk sugar into chocolate mixture.  Add eggs and whisk well.  Then sift cocoa into chocolate mixture and blend until just combined.  Place in pan and bake in middle of oven for 25 minutes or until done (when thin film forms on top).  Cool on rack for 5 minutes.  Invert onto plate and peel off wax paper.  Dust with cocoa power, powdered sugar or decorate with fruit.

For some of the people on here it's like a breakup they can't get over even though they know the relationship sucked.

Honestly

Honestly, did you all really think that RR was not going to ever be brought up again?  No games have been played yet under the new staff, we are still in a transition period from the old to the new.  While in that transition stage both coaching staffs are going to be discussed.  Like it or not, it is going to happen and it is a valid topic until the transition period is over and we are into actual football games.

First off, I'm as annoyed

First off, I'm as annoyed with this constant RR vs. Hoke debate as most people are, but you should be addressing this to Braylon Edwards, not Brian or anyone else on the board.  You really expect MGoBoard (which discusses anything of the remotest relation to Michigan athletics) to ignore Braylon's comments?

Good post.

I basically agree.

However, I do feel that RR remains a part of the Michigan program and will forever.

It is painfully obvious that some will continue to wistfully dwell on the promise they saw during the RR era and truth be know, that's okay.

The focus does need to shift to the current coaching staff and the future of the program. That transition has begun, but there isn't an on / off switch that can flipped. Grieiving is a process that must be allowed to run its course.

A good season this fall would help. A great season would be even more helpful in helping people move on. But RR should not be forgotten, imo.

Honestly, I see policing negative comments towards RR as a mechanism for closure and healing.  Seriously, you have a group of people here that were passionate, informed and united in their defense of RR as the head coach.  These are people with intelligence and confidence.  Their enemy in this whole thing is fans, media and alumni that "didn't give RR a chance".  In other words, people that weren't as informed as them but were bringing down their cause and didn't think RR would succeed from day one.  In the end, it just so happened that in the face of the knowledge and facts at their disposal, they ended up being wrong.  RR was ultimately not successful.  He ultimately didn't win enough games to keep his job.  I don't think there is anything wrong with them continuing to hold onto something of their cause if it makes them feel a little better about how things went down, and if it is policing people taking shots at RR post-firing so be it.  As time goes on, especially into next season there will be less and less of these types of posts.

Who?

I don't know anyone by that name with the Michigan Football Program.   Was he or she  BB (before Bo) or AB (after Bo)?

Really?  I can't focus on Mike Hart, Tim Biakabatuka, Desmond Howard, and Tom Brady?  Let's be honest here... how does one NOT focus on Tom Brady?

Fine with me, but I really

Fine with me, but I really didn't think I said anything too offensive or controversial.  Just proposing that we move on from something that is obviously not helping to mend the rift between our now divided fanbase.

not logical; it doesn't follow that because people

are divided over what happened with Rich they will be divided over Hoke. And when wrongs (alleged or real) are done, sweeping them under the rug is usually not the first (2nd or 3rd) order of business in the public sphere. I'm weary of some of the debate, too, but that doesn't mean that establishing the facts isn't legitimate, or that people with something to say on the matter shouldn't put forth their ideas. It's a typical herd thing here to try to shout people down but--better idea--just read posts on subjects that interest you. If you're sick of it, ignore it. This is, as I see it, a forum for precisely such back and forth, and to the degree that the place has been taken over by homers who just want to run the M flag up the pole and have us all salute--well--the place is the poorer for it.

And--honestly--you don't think the current Braylon boneheadedness wants calling out? I'm all for getting behind Hoke (as time goes on) but some of the hypocrisy has been breathtaking. When it comes time to stop calling out the noodles, nitwits, and numbskulls--whatever uni they wear--I am out of here, too.

What I think its about

Forgiveness. It will take time for the wounds inflicted by both sides to heal and I think we've just got to grit our teeth and deal with it until then.

I know I still have a hard time forgiving RR for running Steven Threet in a zone read offense in front of over 100,000 fans at the winningest football program in history. Someday maybe I'll be able to forgive and forget about it, I'd say the day we beat MSU, tOSU & contend for big ten titles annually will be that day. Until then I just stew & wait for brighter days ahead.

Now, if coach Hoke sends Denard & Vincent Smith out to run a straight up power I regardless of their chances of having success. I'll feel pretty much the same way as I did when RR jammed it up the collective asses of millions of Michigan fans. Insulted & betrayed. Perhaps even moreso by Hoke because he has specifically stated and been instructed to use the players he has to the teams best potential. RR at least had the plausible deniability like costanza "You mean I want supposed to do that?" "I did not see that in the employee handbook".

Maybe putting Threet in a pro

Maybe putting Threet in a pro style makes him slightly more effective. However, if your OL sucks(like ours did in 08) and you have an inaccurate QB(RR's passing game is much, much simpler and easier than Llyod's was, a point people consistently miss when addressing this topic and discussing Threet's chances for success). The difference is that Denard won Big Ten POY and Steven Threet just posted a 18/16 TD/Int ration as a 4th year JR in an offense suited to his skills. *

*I fully expect Borges to maximize Denard's talents when the season rolls around and remain unshaken after the Spring Game.

The Team

I think it would have made the team more effective not just Threet. We would have at least looked somewhat like we knew what we were doing on the field. Minor would have been much more effective running power, passing game could have been "simplified" for Threet, lots of short screen stuff etc. and our defense was good enough to keep us in games.

If RR had followed more this type of formula I think we'd have won 6 games. Which would have protected the bowl steak and bought RR the 4th year that so many would have liked to see(hell I even have a part of me that wanted that).

Doing what he did, just tossing it all out and making a complete overhaul in year 1 was a big gamble. He knew he was pissing off a big chunk of the fanbase but I think he figured he could win them back with future results(like he did in WV). Problem is while some things(offense) were trending better & showing major progress, the overall product was still weak at the end of his 3rd season. He gambled and lost and I'm betting he knows this was the case.

Year 1 was a world class clusterfuck that looked like a bunch of monkeys on the field. Sheridan/Threet clapping, stomping, waving & staring at the sidelines for what seemed like an eternity(even to the point of delay of games/timeouts). Total and obvious confusion in the backfield, dropped snaps, missed reads that had backs literally bashing into the QB and lets not forget poor McStuffy getting his poor head bashed in while 100,000+ Michigan faithfull looked on in utter disgust.

Then in press conferences you heard RR just saying "we're young" and "we'll get better" and myself along with others were thinking "we'd better, cuz we couldnt possibly get any f-ing worse!!" but...we swallowed our anger and looked forward to better days. Let him recruit "his guys" and install "his system" and this will all be worth it(we told ourselves).

3yrs done and it just didnt get "better" enough. So many harbor bad feelings toward the man for having been given the benefit of the doubt in yr 1 only to emerge 3yrs later with a november-january meltdown that looked way too much like year 1.

We'll forgive and forget, but only winning will expedite that. Until then a whole bunch of folks will continue to get this shitty taste in their mouths at the mere mention of his name.

Can't we all just get along?

Let's face it.  The decision for Rich Rod to become the head coach here was not a good one for either party - IN RETROSPECT.  Obviously, Bill Martin (and whoever else was involved in the decision) had imperfect information about who would be the best choice for coach.  OK, they made a poor decision.  And Rodriguez probably should have done his due diligence before deciding to take the job.  But, I don't doubt anyone's motive for wanting to do the best for Michigan. It just didn't work out.  So, the only choice now is to move on and make things better.

Eh I'm not sure about the bad

Eh I'm not sure about the bad info thing.  Several coaches turned us down, then all of a sudden we landed one of the hottest coaches in the sport.  Any AD will make that hire on the spot.

If this were still Lloyd Carr's Michigan..

This thread would have read something more along the lines of:

It is a melancholy object to those who walk through this great town or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the winged helmets, and The Big House, crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six Pahokeeans, all in dreads and importuning every passenger for a slot position. These linebackers, instead of being able to work for their honest positions, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg for playing time for their helpless  backups: who as they grow up either turn into injuried safeties for want of health, or leave their dear native team to fight for the community college, or sell themselves to the razorbacks.

..

I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection.

I have been assured by a very knowing Ohioan of my acquaintance in Columbus, that a young healthy child well paid is after a year old still eligible, whether paid in tattoos, cash, given cars; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve a chance at another Big Ten championship..

A very worthy person, a true lover of his country, and whose virtues I highly esteem, was lately pleased in discoursing on this matter to offer a refinement upon his scheme. He said that many gentlemen of this kingdom, having of late destroyed their eligibility, he conceived that the want of victories might be well supplied by the bodies of young lads supplied with lassies not exceeding fourteen years of age nor under twelve; so great a number of both sexes that even Auburn would tell storied about it. But with due deference to so excellent a friend and so deserving a patriot, I cannot be altogether in his sentiments; for as to the females, my Ohioan acquaintance assured me, from frequent experience, that their flesh was generally tough and lean.

I am disappointed only in that someone with far superior literary skills did not make a better attempt at this than I...

I hate pistachio ice cream.

And when I walk into an ice cream shop, knowing that I hate pistachio ice cream, I don't consume it.  This seems reasonable and correct to me.

Some readers of this blog (e.g., the OP) walk into an ice cream shop, consume something they hate, and then bitch about it to anyone who'll listen.

For fuck's sake, if you don't want to read about RichRod, what Braylon said about RR, or what 481 mgoblog comments (and counting) have to say about what Brian had to say about what Braylon had to say about RR...

...THEN FOR CHRIST'S SAKE,  FEEL FREE NOT TO READ THOSE POSTS.

Alternative post flavors include hockey recruiting, TomVH updates, and OT posts on the reading habits of one Kemba Walker.   For that matter, other flavors include BWS and The Wolverine Blog.

Other variations of this theme include:  people who post on the Washington Post or NYT boards to announce they think the news posted on those sites is hopelessly biased towards a liberal point of view (feel free to replace WaPo/NYT with "Fox News" and liberal with "conservative").

It's April 19.  September 3 is really, really far.  I'm perfectly happy reading posts about the old regime (you know, the one that doesn't coach for Michigan) because it's interesting to me, and frankly, there isn't much else to discuss that's nearly as passionate.  If a RR-flavored post tastes bad to you, stop reading as soon as you realize it's a RR-flavored post.

/incredulous rant

/thinking people should write their own f'n 100% richrod free blogs if they feel there is a market niche for it

EDIT:  I was also fooled into clicking on this in the hope it would be about eating children.

The fact that no one wants to admit

Is that deep down in places we don't talk about at parties, we need argument on this wall, we want argument on this wall...
Every one of us here is some degree of addicted to controversy, and that's why it hasn't stopped. Still it gets annoying when past your degree.
