Moderator Action Sticky #3

Submitted by Brian on

Hello. The previous mod action sticky was cumbrously long so this is a new one. What this thread is for:

This thread is an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

NOTE: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted.

Update: There's now a Mod Action Sticky IV.

Braxton Miller Injury

I don't think speculating about the motivations of Ohio State or their staff - coaching or medical - when it comes to injuries is a great idea. If you can present evidence that something is going on, feel free to do so, but the thread as it stands is not gong to produce a lot of good discussion, or indeed healthy discussion.

The Lizzy Seeberg Sign (College Gameday)

This might be debated, but I think this one needs to come down - explanation from the sign's originator (one that doesn't seem completely genuine either, IMHO) or not, it just doesn't need any more attention than it has. It also invites discussions that probably aren't germane for a sports blog.

Before this become less than what it already is...

2013 Norfleet punt return challenge

I left it up in the vain hope that it would be redressed as something that would generate interesting discussion, but it is reasonably clear that this will not happen. It's fine to ask questions about pesonnel decisions, but not in a manner meant to troll people or be otherwise divisive. I like to think we're better than that.

OT - Goodell on Redskins controversy: ‘We need to be listening’

This thread was borderline for a while, then it seemed to cross the border. This is a debate that, while it involves sports teams, is probably beyond the scope of this blog.

...and despite the awesomeness of the hit:

Da'Shawn Hand Smack Down

This was covered the other day, and the GIF in the article is courtesy of our own Ace.

Who wants my free ticket to the Meeechigan Football Party? (Update: gone)

As the tickets have been won, there likely is not much point in this thread remaining up.

Why Devin's Horrible Interception May Portend a Heisman

I'll be honest - I thought about leaving this up as a cuationary tale on making comparisons based on very little data, speculating about the Heisman too early and a few other minor things (could have used a better title too), but I don't think a lot of useful discussion ever gets started here beyond analyzing a play that this board has already extensively discussed.

Also this....

Giving away 2 free tickets to todays game

The tickets have been given away, so this is being removed for now to avoid potential confusion, but if anyone else has tickets, it can return with the appropriate edits for your situation / requirements.

More specific flaw with Al Borges

...as well as...

Projecting forward

I went through these and these still fall below the snowflake bar, somewhat mature threads though they may be.

...and this...

Time to Panic!

The official mod ruling on this is "No".

...and this as well...

This is why you ignore the ''Best team in the B1G" crap two weeks in

It's a blizzard!

Blake Countess should wear #2

I thought about this for a bit, but it is probably better served as a comment in the Snowflake thread already provided.

This Herm act is getting really old.  And this post accuses players of being out partying on Friday night, intentionally spreading false rumors.  Maybe I'm overreacting but I'm sick of his stupid crap.

Defensive Line Questions/Thoughts

We're managing this one rather tightly tonight - please post these thoughts in the Snowflakes thread or perhaps save them for the UFR post.

...also this...

AP/Coachs Rankings on Sunday? I say #25.

Let's wait until the polls actually come out so we circumvent speculation and simply know. Does this not sound simpler? Also, Snowflake.

For now, these sit below the Snowflake Bar....

Defensive Line Questions/Thoughts

as well as

Lack of Push by Oline

This being said, someone did bring up an interesting point and it might get enacted as an experiment next week to see how it goes. We could subdivide snowflake to offense and defense, particularly if we're going to get a monster snowflake thread, and see if this helps alleviate this issue of numerous snowflakes appearing after the established thread(s). For now, however, one thread shall rule them all this weekend, or at least until the original thread rolls off the front page since no one will look for it after that. The restrictions will likely be gradually rolled back later today and into Monday as everyone has had a chance to collect themselves.

---------------

On the other hand...

The Taylor Lewan Injury

Scary in the moment though it was, this could undeniably have gone in the Snowflake thread.

Seriously, it's fucking annoying that you delete a thread that people are having legit conversations in.  It was hurting no one.  It was not preventing UM discussion from happening. You could have just locked it and let us still read it.

I'm calling bullshit on Breaking Bad getting deleted.  It's one of the greatest TV shows of all time, Brian references it a ton, Spencer Hall writes about it, and it has much better conversation than 75% of the football threads right now.

The OT rule is to prevent 8 OT threads on a Thursday when there's legit football to discuss.  Early in the week, is it really the worst thing to have one thread about something that so many people clearly are invested in?

If Brian chimes in and says it needed to be deleted, fine.  But I think you're taking the rule far too literally and not looking at the spirit of the rule.

justingoblue

September 16th, 2013 at 10:38 PM ^

letting the thread stay up is against the spirit of the rule, and maybe it should have gone right away. My directive is to keep threads on topic with certain sports exceptions. What Brian references on the front page isn't really relevant; there isn't a rule saying "no Breaking Bad", there's a rule against threads devoted to off topic subjects.

I left it up for quite a while because I love the show and like seeing the community's reaction as much as anyone, but any thread as off topic as a drama series is going to go until the end of the season. Brian hasn't exactly been ambigious about this.

I'm late to the game, but in case anyone cares:  No OT means no OT.  It is what it is and I'm fine with it.  And OT threads that remain are most likely there because someone didn't catch it.  I'm sure the mods are doing their best.  I'm sure there are plenty of message boards if people really need to chat about Breaking Bad . . .

justingoblue

September 28th, 2013 at 11:34 PM ^

I'm unclear what "equal as a sport to professional sport" means, but it was LSA that let that thread stay up, not me. Every OT thread that isn't covered by a specific exemption has been deleted, it's a simple, easily understandable rule that the site uses to function.

I'm sure there are plenty of Breaking Bad sites out there, or you could always start your own. Same for any other off topic subject.

I am willing to take the heat if people disagree, but I think this one might need to go:

OT: Alabama is integrating (the Greek System)

Even though it is a significant development, I read the thread over three times and could see some signs of a potential downward spiral (as well as some somewhat political comments which may have begun an unfortunate exchange if not removed), so it is down for now.

(__)_)))))))))))) D

Why don't we save these thoughts for the snowflake thread, eh? I think that sounds much better.

Brady Hoke honeymoon over

You can save these thoughts for a snowflake thread, and as a warning, I highly doubt this thread would be anything but a clusterf*ck, pardon my English.

Turnovers need to end

There will be threads to accommodate all these thoughts.

Could you guys take a look at the last couple of posts by exmtroj and maybe do something about it? I'm all for people expressing their opinion but a lot of the stuff he's posting is just vile.

Michigan v. UConn Snowflakes Thread

Per the experiment mentioned last week, we're on this.

Remember Jehuu Caulcrick? Yeah, me either.

Beaten to the punch on this one.

QB contingency plan....

There is an official snowflake thread for offense to suit these concerns.

I sent some info into the Liveblog not to be published, just for staff and mods eyes. And I wonder if it got thru because the Liveblog doesn't seem to work great on my mobile. And since it wasn't to print, I couldn't see it.

hart20

that I very easily could have missed it. If you're trying to catch our attention during the Live  Blog, all caps with a header "MODS" might be the best way to do it but that's still no guarantee.

Question - DG's tendencies under pressure.

This could go in the offense snowflake thread, although it is becoming clear that we might need such a thread for today if we're going to get a lot of these.

Will we get the usual wrap-up from Ace?

How about a more sensible alternative to such a thread - wait for the wrap-up and don't speculate about the state of mind of others.

Unless my front page is broken we actually didnt get the "usual wrap-up from Ace" and that disapointed me.  He is a terrific writer and I looked forward to his insight and emotion - especially since it was coming on the heels of the near disaster last week.

Maybe you should've left that one up.

SIAP: Stevie Brown's ACL Surgery In-Depth

It was a fascinating read, but it was posted a couple days ago. Highly recommended reading though, at least if you ask me.

Borges & Play Calling Opinions

I really hate to do this, but there are already two threads on the front page where similar topics are being discussed.

Reviewing things said in past HTTVs (including when a certain company with less-than-honest business practices changed the name) is totally cool, but this was awfully titled and needed a guy in the comments to decipher it.

Welcome to try again sober.

2014 Florida ATH Richie James.

The more research I did on this thread, even after posting some the stats, the more it seemed like this might not be the most relevant place to hype up an athlete with no Michigan offers nor any forthcoming, at least none that I can find. Further, in going back a few weeks into the OP's posts, they mention being the WR coach at the same school where this kid is a student, so I don't think MGoBlog is the best place for this.

Granted, this could be me being a little gunshy given how the week has gone.

Would it be possible to make the website wider?  As in, use less blue space on the sides and widen the area where all the threads/comments are(very middle).  I think this could help with the overflowing charts that seem to be present far too often and not lose anything as far as the sides go (since they are bare)

Whose Upside is higher? UM or MSU?

I guess I just don't see where this is going to produce a lot of productive discussion, given that we're not exactly sure what "upside" is in this case and, given that it is a Michigan blog, the OP must have a hint at what the answer might be. In any case, it is statistically demonstrable that - historically - we have the greater "upside" insofar as in-season records are concerned.

Buffalo whooping on UConn

This is best mentioned in one of the ongoing football open threads if you really would like to discuss it, but taking a slap at the team in a thread all its own really isn't necessary. Extraneous thread is extraneous, I am afraid.

META: Deleting Threads

This was left so the questions could get answered not only by us but by experienced users, and I believe the OP has clear direction on what to do in the future now when there is a question on the rationale for deletion of a thread.

DonAZ

I know the site is in the middle stages of an upgrade.  So perhaps what I'm experiencing is related to that.

I find long delays "connecting" to see a thread, log on, or make a post.  Often I see "Problem Loading Page" errors.  Is it just me?  Or is this systemic?

If the answer is that others are seeing the same and it's being worked on ... then okay, cool.  I'll then stop waving an angry fist in the direction of Comcast. :-)
