Moderator Action Sticky #3

Submitted by Brian on

Hello. The previous mod action sticky was cumbrously long so this is a new one. What this thread is for:

This thread is an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

NOTE: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted.

Update: There's now a Mod Action Sticky IV.

Questions for Michigan AD or Coaches

The thread is now off the board as the request of the OP, which is you in this case. Hopefully, we didn't get anyone into hot water with the responses, although because people inside the department read this blog, I assume it had a few people a bit irritated and this is the reason.

I want John U Bacon to be Michigan's Athletic Director

I don't know that this is going to achieve what the OP thought it might achieve, at least not at 24 downvotes now (as well as 10 upvotes, so if I catch heat for this, that's fine). I think if it had been presented somewhat differently, it may have gone over better. The replies also really don't make me confident we could salvage this discussion at this juncture without starting over.

What was meant to be a funny extension of the Gary Wright meme from the Hello post has devolved into something I never expected. I expected to get negged for poor compostion of lyrics, but not accused of stalking, or worse.

Yeah, that thread has become a regular marketplace, hasn't it? My first choice - and it would require some Seth / Brian action perhaps - would be to just ditch that thread and create a new version as things have changed, but I will work on cleaning that up little by little throughout the week as it is going to take some time. Thanks for the alert.

OT: Window replacement question?

This one wandered into "kiosk" territory, which makes its presence on the board temporary in lieu of sufficient guidance. The OP did get what he needed and gave the go-ahead to remove the thread.

Detroit News Bans Use of 'Redskins' In Football Coverage

I thought about strtegies to salvage this, but I couldn't do it without creating situations where people would simply restate disagreements in a most unfortunate manner. I am going to share an opinion here, but all of it seemed to provide to evidence that we're simply not ready to have this sort of sociocultural discourse when it comes to sports without some ugly thoughts appearing.

It's offseason and the trolls have been pretty well behaved lately. I'm leaning toward having some of these discussions. We've got one of the most intelligent collection of sports fans this side of Grantland. I felt bad that I nixed the Sam discussion before. Maybe it's time we start trusting the intelligence of the readership to frame debates that affect sports.

I tend to agree with you Seth but last night's thread contained deliberate race-baiting that prompted me for the first time to ask that a moderator take some sort of action. If you're going to allow or encourage such a discussion, there are some who will take the opportunity to cross "the line" to generate as much offense and be as hurtful as possible. Deleting the thread put an end to it, at the cost of an open debate. Leaving it essentially unmoderated allowed a few to offend under the guise of debate. The middle ground would have required quite a bit of work and a lot of explanation on someone's part. Tough call.

No More Soccer/Celebrate America Posbang Thread

I really don't think minimalizing the interest in soccer and thereby insulting its audience on this board is really the best premise for a posbang thread, even if you try to mask it with football and patriotic sentiments. Certainly, you can do better than this.

Hoke hot seat

I struggled with this one, but I think it is probably better for the board if this goes as it is bringing out some unnecessary sniping and a lot of very tired arguments regarding something that may very will get discussed often enough during the season, I am sure. Also, it's a holiday week, folks.

This Book is for the Fans

I thought about this for a while, but the edit of the previous thread and the lack of traction here in comparison to the other HTTV thread makes me think that the conversation might be better served with just the one thread for now. No offense to the OP here, of course.

So a "troll-only" poster, who is 300 points in the hole in less than a month, made an extremely distasetful comment directed at one of the most informative posters on the board:

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/womens-hoops-hello-hallie-thome#comment-258…

Perhaps it's a good time to put a stop to him/her (and, if you are feeling generous, the companion poster who showed up at about the same time).

I deleted the comment and put this person in Bolivia pending further action, which given their history will likely come soon. It is actually the second incarnation of this user and they apparently have not learned how to be a contributing member of the blog, or rather one who actually wish to have constructive discussion. All the same, you're right - the comment was distasteful and implying something not good, and the user being reprimanded obviously has some growing up to do.

Vacation

I shall assume that this was meant as a comment in the drinking thread, as that might have been the most logical place for it on the board. What bothers me is that we were never told where the OP went on vacation, so it isn't as if we could have had a nice thread going on places to stop along the way or places to visit once they arrived.

I completely disagree.  I'm not one to get my posts pulled on this board, as I'm not the type of person to show a lack of "class".  I think this is a case of overzealous moderation.  I didn't say anything negative at all. Simply suggested that this could be linked to a story that came out that SPECIFICALLY mentioned this situation being prevalant in "bagman" situations. I think you put your own projections on it.  I'm not a big fan of having my opinion muted because I don't ever try to stir stuff up.

I actually meant to pull something someone said in response to you which was sort of borderline conspiracy and accidentally pulled that whole chain by mistake. Hit the right radio button at the wrong level of the conversation. If I could undo that, I would do so as I didn't think your comment was the problem per se. Sorry about that :-(

Well then, I guess the Cam Newton thing should not have been discussed on here at all?  I understand that if you think taking money is a bad thing, that my opinion could paint a negative light on him.  I don't necessarily think that way... and it was also clearly speculation.  I wasn't asserting that he definitely took money, I was suggesting that it was a strong chance.  But no problem, LSA.  I appreciate you taking the time to give me an explanation.

had a specific allegation made against him that was being discussed. The other is a high school student we are still recruiting and apparently had transportation issues. I realize that wasn't posted at the time however you had no basis for making the allegation other than a general article you read on the internet that it may happen at some schools. I think insinuating this about guys we are still recruiting is unacceptable.

Regardless of whether you feel they should be able to take cash, it's not allowed under current rules. If you can't see the difference, I can't help you.

Just Delete.....

I sort of got the idea of what this was about from the context of the thread, but no matter, the thread is deleted at the request of the OP.

Taylor Lewan only 1st Round (yet to sign)

Phrased a little differently and with a little more meat, this probably survives in most cases, but "thoughts?" pretty much opens the door to a minor negbang and a thread which - while funny - is not in any sense the discussion the OP was probably aiming to have. As of this morning, Justin Gilbert hadn't yet signed either, but he did so earlier this afternoon.

Piggybacking on this:  In the "Trey Burke sued" thread he's continuing with his trolling ways.  He's repeatedly called the plaintiff "ugly" and "dumb" (even though the guy has a disorder).  I mean, I think the lawsuit is frivolous, but there's no need to be an ass.

Expect an eerily similar account to be created by the end of the day. In the end it comes down to the question South Park posed about trolls, "How do you kill that which has no life?".

When some scumbag is as dedicated to trolling a site as this poster is, banning one particular account doesn't do a whole lot.

Surely there can be a waiting period (say 7 days or so) between registration and allowing the person to post?  It would also help reduce the number of fans of certain other teams who show up to troll the board during the fall.

Frank Clark provides MSU bulletin board material.

Yeah, I think this one needs to go now. There really wasn't any "bulletin board material", and while MSU probably isn't "just another game" to the team in reality, Clark was rather respectful and even complimentary to MSU even with the minor zinger within the quotes. I don't think you'll find a lot of fans here in a huff over this.

Seems to need a major timeout based off of the York suspension main page post.  Although I'm pretty sure he has already been banned once under a different name.

A long string of ugly stuff in the York main page comments: deleted. To recap for those upset about losing that thread:
Dude: all [sport] players are [race] and [class].
Other Dude [takes bait]
Guy I am banning right after I post this: flaaaaaaaame!
Some Dude: [sarcastic comment with obscure movie reference]
Guy I'm banning: That's racist!

Those were the highlights. So nobody bitch that I killed off all those comments.

Speaking of advertising, can I ask a quick question that's not worth a thread?

Does subscribing to the Detroit News in any  way support or help the Freep because of the JOA? I've cancelled the Freep but don't want to take the News if it's in any way going to support the Freep.

Major shuffle on the O-line

This was essentially covered in a thread from yesterday evening which is still on the first page of threads for the moment. For those who are curious, look for a thread called "Hoke Revealed First String O-Line Today" and remember that there is the depth chart and then the depth chart.

Denard scores GW TD run in Jaguards Preseason Game

Jabrill Peppers tears ACL. Out for the year.

No. Just no. This was perhaps not great execution of such a thread (note: no such thread is worth executing) and at the worst possible time - fall camp. As they say, you are awarded no points and, well....you know the rest, I am sure.

The MGoUser shall sit out the season, but he is also blocked and thus not a problem now.
