Moderator Action Sticky #3

Submitted by Brian on

Hello. The previous mod action sticky was cumbrously long so this is a new one. What this thread is for:

This thread is an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

NOTE: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted.

Update: There's now a Mod Action Sticky IV.

Supposed to be a reply in minivan thread. Ignore

The process for creating a thread is not quite like the process for merely replying to a thread, so I am intrigued as to how it would have ended up on board. All the same, it can't be moved and the text had been deleted, so down this goes.

Speaking of the minivan thread....

OT: Minican Q - New Caravan or used Sienna/Odyssey?

It's been up for a few hours now. That's enough time, I think.

Yeah, I think that there was no way it was an accident.  It's just too different of a process.  The buttons are nowhere near eachother, you have to fill out different things, choose topics, tags, categories, etc.  My guess is that he was mad about something said in the minivan thread, created his own thread about it, then once he started getting a negative reception he claimed he meant it as a "reply".

The iphone app never asked me any of those typical thread creating questions you're mentioning.

If I did want it to be a thread, I have a ton of points and have been here nearly 5 years, why would I care about a few negs on a post that obviously is polarizing?   As I mentioned in the other replies to you, after being here this long do you really think I would create a one sentence thread on a topic that was already on the board?    Hell, I cant even remember the last time I created a thread and don't really post very often, yet I'm intentionally posting a thread like that?  Ok.

Pelini has a funny side? Him, a cat, the spring game and FauxPelini

As interesting as it was, Bo Pelini and his acceptance of all the memes did make it to the board yesterday. It was rather amusing though. It should still be on the second page.

I changed this thread title because I'm an idiot

This was a thread on the Slippery Rock, which was to be deleted at the request of its author since it has been covered (although not for a while now, to be fair). As for the repurposing, that's probably what the open thread is best used for, to discuss whatever.

...and the worst of it has been deleted and the offender dealt with. Yeah, there's trolling and then there is making ill-advised remarks and then blaming others for your own shortcomings. Sadly, this poster chose the latter route. Hopefully, in their next MGoLife, they will appreciate the slightly more pleasant atmosphere that we're working on here.

We're not a titties blog. 10% of our readership is female, a large portion of our readership have culturally conservative sensibilities, and almost half of our readers during the daytime are at work. Despite my personal appreciation of Kate Upton dancing around in underwear--and that appreciation is very great--it doesn't add anything to the site.

Kate Upton's a Michigan fan and Brian made an explicit exception for her. Were it up to me I'd just rather not have this sort of thing on here. It's not like you can't find half-naked women on the internet elsewhere.

Main point: Responding to people who are offended tends to just make it worse for everyone--if they have to put up with our tastes and sensibilities, at least let them make their feelings known without coming down on them for their religious feelings.

US Supreme Court says states have the right to a use (or not use) race (UM Admissions Case)

This had some posts in it that were taking it in a potentially downward sprial. This will have to come down for everyone's safety, I think.

MGoReaction - Support for McGary, disdain for Glasgow

I think the tribe has more or less spoken on this one, and I have grave doubts that this would produce much in the way of the discussion the OP was likely hoping to have. In various threads, we've discussed each of these separately, but for the record, they are in no way comparable situations.

2015 MBB recruiting updates.

This is coming down not because the content per se but a couple other things:

1) It's paywalled information - the procedure around here typically is to post the link and then give a short summary which still leaves some value to actually finding out what the link contains. Posting the entire body of content (or at least a significant portion of it) is not fair to that site.

2) It was not attributed - it took some digging on my part to find out where this came from, and I assume others were wondering. I did not see the information attributed to a source, which is also not fair to the site or author.

The OP can always post the a similar thread later with the link, a summary and proper attribution.

XBOX Live Gamertag. (OT)

I could be wrong about this, and if so, I don't mind putting it back. Even for the OT season, however, a thread soliciting suggestions for someone's XBOX Live username seems a bit "kiosk", if you will, and therefore a bit too OT.

OT: Is this the Tom Brady of this year's draft?

Yeah, Bleacher Report is taking it a little too far in this particular instance. As interesting as Shakey Jake's run of threads has been, there is a point where it is simply too much and Bleacher Report crosses that line, I would think. Just so the OP knows, the rule is - with some extremely narrow exceptions - no Bleacher Report.

Dear Moderators,

Please cave Snow Sucks, a.k.a Wolverines Dominate, We Are Borg, I Have A Gnarly Face, Ranch Doritos, etc.

Sincerely,

The entire MGoCommunity

Until recently, he had been doing OK with walking the line, but Snow Sucks then tripped and fell over the line and kept on walking away from it. He also basically stated his intent to continue such trolling in a few threads here and there, so I sent that account to Bolivia and left the posts so people could know what to look for. Indeed, I believe he is back already.

LSA I have a question for you.  If you guys know that Snow Sucks is back again under yet another different user name (this will be his 5th or 6th I believe) why do you allow it?  Unless he's changing computers he likely has one primary IP address and the guy contributes nothing but negativity to the board and has done so for several years.  It's one thing for a person to get caved and come back kinder and gentler (Lord Grantham comes to mind) but this guy is, was and forever will be nothing but a troll.

He obviously doesnt like people.  Why not shoot the damn thing once and for all and put him and the rest of us out of its misery?

LSAClassOf2000

At the level of board moderator, I don't have the capability to do the IP block or in his case I would do it in a cold minute quite frankly as the lesson obvoiusly does not sink in for him. I believe Seth and Brian and others above my pay grade can do it, although I believe Seth once said it was not the easiest thing to do given this setup.

through a proxy server. Someone determined to get on a site can not really be blocked. All you can do is make it less convenient. Sometimes it's better letting it go and knowing where the troll is assuming he isn't already going through a proxy or some other site that assigns random IP's.

Typically, threads that start with "I'm drunk" don't last long, and indeed, this one did not. In-conference opponent or otherwise, do let people eat their meal or have their drink.

100 Days to Kickoff

Although the thread is now off the first page, this was covered in the last 24 hours. I think it might actually be 99 days and some change now, but I could be wrong there. Either way, good to see the enthusiasm for the season already.

Also...

Trey Burke and THJ make NBA All Rookie 1st Team

As great news as it is, this was also covered less than 24 hours ago.

I suppose what set me off is the phrasing - "please don't taint it with soccer", they said in reference to this blog, a sports blog, because heaven forbid we should cover sports on a sports blog, right? The small but vocal "please only cover the sports I personally enjoy" group make me want to publish that three-part treatise I did on fencing once.

Mods:

Might I suggest it's time for Sticky #4?  While the volume of comments has slowed down signficantly since ther restoration of the points system it's still almost a year old and 900 comments long and very cumbersome to navigate.

Just a thought.

I can make a sticky but I don't think I can change the link address on the top bar. My plan was to wait until preseason to ask for a new one but if everyone wants a new one now opposed to a shorter one for football season I don't have a problem making the request.

This was actually the main thrust of the "MBB News" thread earlier, so we'll leave that one as a place to discuss what is hopefully a speedy recovery for Max.

The End of Michigan Football: How Would it Happen?

Perhaps the ultimate to date in "doom and gloom" threads, at least this offseason anyway, there's nothing productive that will come out of this. Also, it makes my avatar want to go:

OT: A Buckeye fan is laid to rest, at least you gotta admire the dedication

If I am correct here, this photo has made it to the blog a few times and is a few years old at least now, so I feel relatively safe in removing it as being "done before", if you will. I am not sure how old precisely, but the dude in the casket has been in the ground a while, I am sure.

As awesome a story as it is, the "Future Michigan Man, Hunter Gandee" thread is still in the first page of threads and is covering this topic, so we will let that one remain.

This was taken down at the request of the OP so it could be reformatted and posted later - hopefully, we do get to see this because it sounded fascinating indeed.
