Moderator Action Sticky #3

Submitted by Brian on

Hello. The previous mod action sticky was cumbrously long so this is a new one. What this thread is for:

This thread is an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

NOTE: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted.

Update: There's now a Mod Action Sticky IV.

OT - Judge Jeanine Rips Rolling Stone Cover

I was hoping that I wouldn't find a use for this thread this early in its existence, but a few things - few people seemed to know who Judge Jeanine was (myself included) and there is almost no chance that a discussion of the reasoning behind the recent Rolling Stone cover avoids politics.

My tolerance for UM related stuff is correllated to how interesting it is and how much effort the author put into it. In this case it's just one of those stupid "here's 25 gifs of people expressing emotions" that takes 5 minutes to write for every demographic on the internet. "Omigod they mentioned Skeepers!" doesn't rate.

Devin Gardner fluff piece on Grantland

Had to sit through four meetings this morning in order to get around to mod duties, but this one was just a few threads late.

07/27/2013 EDIT:

SI article on Jabrill Peppers

Awesome article, but it was posted yesterday. That being said, I fear what might happen as it was Chuck Norris who posted the second thread and I was the fool that removed it.

SI.com: Michigan commit Jabrill Peppers has scary mix of size, speed, drive

Same as above. I do like the excitement surrounding Jabrill Peppers - I definitely share it.

07/29/2013 EDIT:

2014 5-Star CB Marlon Humphrey On Campus?

Also, just a thread late - we'll contain our excitement for "ALL OF THE FIVE STARS" to a single thread when it comes to Marlon Humphrey.

Block quoted most of an article without sourcing it. No problem with the content except I disagree: if a kid hasn't hurt anyone and hasn't played a down anywhere let him go. ND is fine on the DL this year, trust me.

When something has little upside regarding discussion of Michigan/athletics in general combined with some pretty serious downside for the board it's going to get pulled.

OT Relatively New Social Dating Service App: Tinder

The crowd more or less spoke in this instance. Granted, we have OT season for about another three weeks or so, but this seems to challenge the limits of "OT" on this blog.

Ohio State Contemplating Replacing Names on Jerseys with Values

The trend of the voting (18 downvotes at the time I did this) was probably indicative of the trend, so this one is going to come down. The potential for satire is noted, but as someone in the thread seemed to hint at, someone needs to be the bigger blog here.

...docked a user's points for a comment the was "too political" we have multiple examples of explicitly political posts by another user. This one in particular is egregious. For some reason, he's not been similarly reprimanded. Recommend you treat them the same way: either dock them both or restore the points of the first user.

Ascribing motives based on behavior of like minded political figures and the commentary linking the friends political beliefs and a dislike of Robinson in the first comment were the problems. The second one is getting linked with that* because a) certain posters have loved to play the "I never said politics" game while telling the board about their political beliefs for years and b) the use of a throwaway political phrase like "Culture Wars" and the fact that the regent elections allow for the use of the word "Dems" while towing the no-politics/on-topic line as much as possible.

*I don't mean you specifically, I mean how I perceive it in general.

Went ahead and locked it, it's devolved way past the point of redeeming value. I do agree with MGoShoe that locking it took place too late, my bad there.

...an outcome of an election to change the balance of power from one party to another, he has leaped over the no politics line. I concur with your characterizations otherwise. Both users went over the line. Therefore, both users should be treated the same way.

If you don't concur, that's certainly your call and I won't say anthing more on the topic.

Locking the thread and keeping it up isakin to locking the barn door after the animals have all run off. Recommend you delete the thread.

but it seems we're disagreeing on "openly rooting" and not much else. I absolutely see where you're coming from, but that's about all I'll say. If you'd like to converse on this further I'm on your list of followers on Twitter.

Locking it leaves it up in the search function, and I have to double check but I don't believe comments are visable any longer. I was offline when it was first posted or there would have been more proactive moderation within the thread.

OT (Feel Free to Delete): MGoFantasy?

Some minor de-cluttering now - I left this one up a while, but technically it is out of bounds so it will come down at this time. Hopefully, the OP managed to get sufficient interest in their league (the reason I left it up is that I wanted to give people a fair shot).

I guess it can be a good thing in a way not to go middle ground on the whole no OT thing, but is there a message board out there that is more strict on what's being posted than MGoBlog?  I just don't see the point of what good deleting a thread about a show that would probably get 50 plus replies of good discussion,

Certain mods may or may not look the other way on them for the night, it got taken down in the middle of Monday morning. As for perminantly leaving it up, that's not up to me or LSA, OT policy is Brian's.

OT: Tiger Woods' Major Drought

This probably should have been a comment in the PGA Open Thread, which was left up. To maximize space for non-OT items, we should probably confine sidebar discussions of specific golfers to the open threads for the various tournaments, which will probably stay as they qualify as significant pro sports events.

Before I suffered through yeterday’s “Rhyme and Punishment” experience*, I hadn’t seen the warning that Off-Topic Threads Are Verboten!

A suggestion for those who might not visit this site too frequently, but post occasionally and also didn’t see the OT Warning sign:

Until this site can be running as well as you'd hoped, somewhere near the top of the page, post the OT Warning with a link to the post that explains what topics are permissible now.

* As a hobby, I've written lyrics for a sports-themed band whose members often have complimented me for my work.  On occasion, I post in verse on this site and sometimes I'm complimented by other posters here.  But my experience makes me well aware that one person's gems may be another person's garbage.  So, I'm sorry if I caused a problem for you yesterday..

Oh, it's not a problem - no need to apologize for it. For the record, I actually laughed while reading it. It just doesn't fit the criteria for staying up during the season (or rather, my own interpretation of the brief overview set forth by Brian in the META thread declaring OT season over) so it is by no means a disparagement of the material.

The big confusion this year, I believe, comes from the declaration of the end of OT Season coming A) about three weeks earlier than last year and B) in the form of a thread which quickly was buried by the first wave of on-topic threads. Last year, the warning appeared in the form of a diary from BiSB, as I recall, and that was on the page for quite some time, long enough for most people to see it.

I don't want to create a Meta thread over this but does anybody know if points and voting of any type are planned to be restored anytime soon?  I know this sounds insanely petty but it's just not as much fun posting without getting the feedback loop from your peers on the overall acceptance/agreement with your position.
