Moderator Action Sticky 2014

Submitted by Seth on

New season means new sticky, since these get cumbrously long.

What this thread is for: It's an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

NOTE: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted (see: "cumbrously long").

Before you look for your thread:
1. Was it offensive/political/off topic?
2. Did it link to Drew Sharp, something Mike Valenti said, or Ace Williams?
3. Is there another thread in the last few days on the board that addresses the same topic?

Hall of Stickies Past:
The first, the second, the third.

Yeah, if you could go ahead and not create apparent "I told you so" threads and then poll the board for their thoughts on said thread, that'd be great.

I like holidays, but people saying "MGoBlog claimed Peppers tore his ACL as an April Fools prank" would be the result and we would lose credibility.

Unless someone says different I subscribe to the "no damage of any kind" moral judgment of April Fools joking. This causes damage, namely to us.

We just had 2 threads today on reactions (or over reactions) on the spring game that were posted within minutes of each other.

The first was a one sentence post that said nothing, just asked for thoughts (this right on the heals of a live blog that had hundreds of posts discussing this very thing, while the spring game was going on).  The second was a reasonable, well thought out post that made a number of points about both the offense and defense. Its only fault was that it was posted all of about 10 minutes after the first.

Because it is now MGoBlog convention that the first post stands, the OP of the second post recommended that his be taken down. I disagree with this policy of the blog.

Is it more important to be first and say nothing, or take at least a little time and make a more thoughtful start to a thread? When weighing quality versus timing, particularly when we are talking about minutes, I would think that those moderating the blog would lean towards the former.

This is virtually no different than back in the haloscan days when people would post "first" after each of Brian's posts, in order to be first. The content is indistinguishable.

How about making quality of the OP a prime factor when deciding which of 2 posts to delete?

He's dropped the n-word twice today, the second time in the Desmond Fitzpatrick announcement thread just now, and is being a gratuitous ass about it.

Thanks

Spike Hip Surgery Scenario

This is on the front page, so we'll run with that for now, but feel free to bring up the redshirt scenatio as a discussion within the thread already there.

Deleted just the most political things, e.g. the guy who thinks F150s are poltiical statements, and a few that generated long political threads that were easiest to nip at the top.

Keep an eye on it.

[UPDATE: now locked, one relateively older poster banned for overt racism that tipped it over the edge. Thread was devolving into a spattering of people too quick to take offense, and a whole slew of assholes far too willing to give it.]

[UPDATE UPDATE: Cleaned up thread a tiny bit and handed out one more ban for someone who was all over the thread whipping up politics.]

OT: Clash of clans (blah blah blah, IDGAF)

Well, as long as you don't give a you-know-what, a thread which the OP started with "fuck the haters" is coming down. Also, the OP will not be starting threads for a while.

Topic Locking---Harbaugh Sniping

There's a lot that I could say but won't about the presence of this thread, but I will mention that objections to such locks or deletions should be posted here in the Sticky. Unless there is some egregious breach of reason, making board threads complaining about board moderation generally will not end well.

Hi Guys,

I know moderating/administering a community of this size and diversity is a difficult and often thankless task, so take this as a friendly query:

Is it perhaps time to reassert the prohibition on political threads?

I know there are a ton of political issues centered on the University of Michigan, some of which intersect with the football program or its personnel. But I feel like there are more and more of these threads every week, and a binary us/them culture wars dynamic is asserting itself on this board. With no offense intended to the OP, I see this as part of the problem:

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/development-leader-attempting-prevent-showi…

It's political, it's divisive, and it's only linked to Michigan sports in the most tangential way possible. I mean, if we are going to argue to the death, it should at least be over something meaningful, like what run blocking scheme our offense employs, right?

Speaking generally, one of the things I value about this site is that it's one of the few corners of the internet left that hasn't been infected by the culture wars, and I hope it stays that way.

That said, I also trust you to make the best decision for the site and community. Just wanted to let you know how I felt (and I assume I'm not alone in this).

I think I can answer this one from personal experience. There are plenty of venues to discuss our political views available on the Internet. No matter how closely a topic is related to the University and its football program, the conversation inevitably ends up on a downward spiral of name calling and bad decorum. This blog therefore is not the place for such topics.

Hello: Peoples-Jones

TexanGoBlueHiresHarbaugh is no more again....although he'll likely be back in 5 4 3 2....and cue troll.

As for the point threshhold on threads, that's above my pay grade, but truth be told, I agree it probably should be higher.

I looked at the posting history before the account was caved. He accumulated over 100 points in about an hour and a half, with most of those posts being single words or a single short sentences with enough upvotes that he had only two pages of post hitory (60 or fewer total posts).  I do think a higher minimum point threshold is needed.  This happened so quickly nobody really noticed.  If I'm not mistaken, the threshold was raised to 100 points back when there was only the possibility of accumulating one point per post.  I don't hink 250 points as a threshold is unreasonable.

Hello Carter Dunaway?

It is on the second page of threads, having only moved off the first page yesterday. The search function is your friend when it comes to commitment news here, as it is one of the things you can almost guarantee was posted the moment it happened.

Way OT: Personal call for help

Without much more information for the GoFundMe, the trend of pushback on this was probably going to grow and if it is legitimate, it probably wasn't the reaction the OP was expecting and it probably is better to remove the thread in that regard. That being said, if it is legitimate and you can come back with a much more detailed description of what has occurred and what the goals are, I bet this is much better received. Don't take it personally, OP - the story was very moving, but I don't know that the MGoBoard is always the most appropriate forum.

Not taken personally at all. I wish I had more information to give, but I unfortunately am not on speaking terms with my immediate family anymore. As far as I can tell, my mother needs bone reconstruction due to an incident that happened over a year ago. Without it, I guess she is prone to infections and likely to lose her jaw.

Honestly, I feel no sympathy for her whatsoever. She hasn't worked in over 15 years, and finds every excuse to take the easy way out. The only reason I felt the need to try is for my little brother. Seeing him do something like this for her just tears me up, and I wanted to help him any way I could.

The best I can do for you is vouch that Dustin Woods is my brother, and I can supply contact information for them or myself if necessary. If the thread cannot stay up, I understand, and there are no hard feelings. I'll still be able to say I tried.

Jaylen Brown to Kentucky (maybe)

I get it. Sometimes, we're pressed into jumping the gun in the weird world of recruiting, but then you get....

Does anyone know what happened to the thread with the Hail to the Victors that was done by the Michigan theatre alumni? More importantly, does anyone know what happened with the video?

Personally, I think we should compile a list of the fastest ways to get negged into oblivion.  This has to be high on said list, along with talking crap about HS recruits and starting topics with "I know no politics..."

Is Michigan fan base dead or just laying low?

At 50 downvotes, this is far beyond salvage at this juncture. I do have a theory, of course, on the deaths, for after all...

It was all fun and games until we began really dig for angles on the uniform vendor debate yesterday, and now we really just don't need this one.

OT: Do Wipe From the Front or Back

Yeah, we're going to have to cap these, and in any case, clearly it depends on the grain of the sandpaper that one is using.

Took down a joke thread and a double. The threads about headphones and books and stuff need to come back down to normal.

I know we had a poster change his name and start a lot of community oriented threads, but the sidebar can't be looking like Craigslist; this is still a Michigan site, even if Harbaugh racking up Twitter followers and softball are the only things going on (I think, sorry if there's another team still playing).

Seth

Killed a bunch of threads that are way too OT. Let's keep threads to things that would be of interest to people coming to Michigan sports blog. Otherwise things like the Creaning of two more players gets shoved off the list before a lot of people have seen it.

  • OT: What do you see in this picture?
  • Semi-OT: Need some Advice
  • OT - Favorite Headphones
  • OT: Faster than the speed of light?
  • OT: Jorts, what you need to know and how you can help.
  • OT: A supernatural question
  • Where should I go for lunch?
  • OT - Favorite Seinfeld Episode
Offseason off-topic: Has to be at least tangentially related to Michigan sports fans interests.
In-Season off-topic: Other NCAA teams, general U-M and Ann Arbor things, B1G things.
Always on topic: Michigan athletics things, Michigan opponent things

I know it's been mentioned before, but why not make a sub board for all this OT shit. Leave it unmoderated and people can post whatever the hell they want. Keeps it off the front page of the actual board, and maybe controls how ridiculous this off season has gotten.
