What the hell happens from here outside of things this organization has done before? Fire Caldwell? Mayhew? Getting rid of Lombardi doesn't do much, as this is deeper than playcalling. Does it even matter what the Lions do next, or is this team doomed for the remainder of time?
Harbaugh? No, I doubt he could even right this garbage fire. Kidding, he probably could.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:31 PM ^
It won't matter until Dan Gilbert or someone of his ilk makes Martha Firestone an offer she can't refuse. The culture of losing is so ingrained with the Ford family, nothing will ever change as long as they are in control. Tradition matters. The Lions have a tradition of losing.

Has there ever been an NFL superstar with worse ball control/ security in and around the end zone than Calvin Johnson?

seems so different that in college. Do college guys smile and laugh as much as the Lions or, for that matter, all losing pro teams after a tough loss? Can't say I see it so much. Maybe it's seeing guys you knew in college or prior teams (like Tate), but man, the Lions sure got over that one quick. Guess their mouthwash is they just got paid a couple hundred grand for this game.

"Being a Lions fan is probably the hardest part of being a Detroiter. Not the crime, high insurance, economy, potholes, snow... Nope. Lions."
October 5th, 2015 at 11:33 PM ^
So Seattle knocking it out of the back of the end zone is illegal and the ball should have gone back to Detroit? Awesome
October 5th, 2015 at 11:33 PM ^
ROFL.....
October 5th, 2015 at 11:34 PM ^
The refs just completely jobbed the Lions WOW.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:34 PM ^
Now saying Detroit was jobbed by the officials. The ball being batted out of the EZ was a foul which should have been assessed against Seattle. This should have put the ball at the goal line 1st and goal.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:36 PM ^
It should have been Detroit ball again, the Seahawk batted the ball out of the back of the endzone illegally. Back judge was looking right at it.
I noticed it live, and couldn't believe it wasn't called. I thought maybe the rule had changed, since I don't really follow the NFL.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:35 PM ^
LOL Steve Young....all these guys trying to justify the false ruling.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:40 PM ^
He has a hard time understanding that the punter is committing a foul by batting the ball out of the EZ, the penalty being a safety.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:39 PM ^
that the defense can just intentionally knock the football out thru the endzone and then receive the ball at the twenty despite never gaining possession during the play. Didn't think that was legal but it shouldn't be.
EDIT: Now hearing that it is indeed an infraction to do that, which I THOUGHT on first seeing the play. How the HELL do the officials miss that if so LOL.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:29 AM ^
NFL officials SUCK. They don't know the rules to their own game.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:39 AM ^
I stand corrected--the back judge is actually trying to claim the ball wasnt intentionally hit out of bounds. Is he totally blind?
October 6th, 2015 at 9:34 AM ^
Even if it was not called an infraction, how can you award the ball to the defense without it ever having possession (other than 4th down, punts and kickoffs)?
October 5th, 2015 at 11:37 PM ^
How many more secret NFL rules are the Lions gonna violate?
CJ completion rule, Jim Schwartz time out rule... now this?
bahahahha
October 5th, 2015 at 11:38 PM ^
Or how many crazy calls are the Seahawks going to benefit from?
October 5th, 2015 at 11:37 PM ^
NFL sucking Seahawk dick once again
October 5th, 2015 at 11:38 PM ^
Im 37 and im thinking of doing smething I swore my whole life I could never do. Hear me out for a second, look at what we are facing here. ANOTHER REBUILDING PROCESS. I..I cant. I think I am going to try to route for another team. I am thinking about the Ravens. Not the best franchise but they have 2 superbowls, they made the entire city of Cleveland cry, and their coach is Harbaugh. I dunno man, I think I might be able to pul it off
October 5th, 2015 at 11:39 PM ^
Just pick the Pats... ez mode.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:42 PM ^
Don't do that. The misery is half the fun.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:39 PM ^
That is embarrasing for the NFL, the officials have to know the rules.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:40 PM ^
The common denominator is the Ford family. I wish they would just sell the team and call it a day.
October 6th, 2015 at 1:29 AM ^
The Ford's care a lot about the Lions, that is not the problem at all. Blaming the Fords is just being lazy.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:40 PM ^
they never addressed it during the game. And shame on ESPN for not replaying the entire play. Had they, it might have led to more review. Who knows.
I noticed it live and thought the way the defender made a move to push the ball out of the endzone, it could have been ruled a safety. Glad I now know the rule, but can't believe how badly the Back Judge blew it.
Regardless, the Lions are left with another loss in a way that only they can manage to lose.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:43 PM ^
Instead, ESPN is currently trying everything they can to say they have never even heard of such a rule in all of their football watching/playing lives. It was pretty awkward seeing the rules offical being questioned by the commentators...
October 6th, 2015 at 2:27 AM ^
They fucking lost. Seriously. They lost the fucking game. Its the Lions and they found another way to lose.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:43 PM ^
But I didn't know the Lions got the ball back.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:43 PM ^
i'm glad I cheat with Tom Brady on the side. This is insufferable.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:47 PM ^
Should have brought the teams back out as soon as the problem was recognized. Even if they had to give them time to redress etc., the NFL could have rectified the problem.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:57 PM ^
they could have the clock right, the spot right, and played it out.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:25 AM ^
That would never happen. If the same situation had happened in the 1st Q, would they come back out and replay 3 quarters of the game? It was just an unfortunate missed call at a pivotal moment.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:54 PM ^
The NFL is almost unwatchable. I'm convinced that if it weren't for fantasy football, it would be a dying league.

Someone mentions the fact that when the team that possesses the ball bats the ball through the end zone it's a safety.
I think it's interesting to know it's always supposed to be a flag, but it makes sense that they eat since the defense will always take points rather than take the penalty and give the ball back.
October 5th, 2015 at 11:55 PM ^
two hall of famers and a SB winning QB not know this?!
October 6th, 2015 at 12:00 AM ^
How's that not reviewable? I thought all turnovers were reviewed, which is essentially how it was ruled.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:02 AM ^
The penalty is not reviewable, the play itself is.

If MLB can restart a game months after it was first decided, then I think the NFL could have put things right immediately after the problem was recognized.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:16 AM ^
Oh I agree 100%. Definitely think it should be reviewable.

The former NFL ref on ESPN said that change of possession was clear and would not have called for review. If it had been ruled a TD then the Lions would've gotten the call and had the ball at the 1/4 line. It's a very Lions' thing. Technicalities mean everything and technically they always lose on them.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:15 AM ^
The change of possession should have been reviewed because Seattle never possessed the ball for there to be a change of possession.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:45 AM ^
Fumble out of the EZ is a change of possession. Seattle didn't need to touch it to gain possession. That's clear enough for me.
It was not a good call. It f'ed the Lions. The Lions get f'ed. It's kinda their thing. They're the only NFL team I follow.
*I edited this post.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:06 AM ^
I assumed that was another of thise rules the nfl overthought and screwed up. It's a safety when a punter does it. It's the fumbling teams ball if never recovered. So if either outcome was the rule then the lions would eitger have the ball at the 1 or get kicked to bc of the safety. I'd never seen a team gain possession without you know gaining possession.

But even if you don't want to apply a penalty, they should have returned the ball to Detroit at the point of the fumble just as if the ball had been fumbled out of bounds. And if I recall correctly, that still would have left Detroit 1st and goal from the 1 foot line.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:12 AM ^
Untouched fumble out of EZ is a touchback to the other team.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:16 AM ^
All I was saying is that even if you don't want to assess a penalty, batting the ball out of bounds returns the ball to the last team in possession.
October 6th, 2015 at 12:51 AM ^
Okay.. If it inadvertantly goes off a shoulder pad then it's still a touchback and Seattle's ball. It was intentionally thrown out of the EZ. Should've been a penalty. It's a missed call but not one that could only favor the O. It's the Lions. We've seen it before an we'll see it again.
