MNB Answers the Burning Question: "Who is Matt McGloin?"

Submitted by MGoShoe on

Over at maizenbrew.com, Maize n Brew Dave serves up the down and dirty on Matt McGloin, PSU's presumptive starting QB on Saturday night.  Some highlights:

McGloin was a lightly recruited quarterback prospect out of Scranton, PA, who doesn't appear to have ever been offered a Division One scholarship (Scout/Rivals). But, according to the Scout profile, he can rock the white boy headband. Despite being a Pennsylvania All-State selection, McGloin never garnered a star on either service as a part of the Penn State 2008 class.

McGloin will be starting on Saturday in appears to have a little of the Rex Grossman "*&% It, I'm Going Deep" mentality. Apparently supremely confident in his abilities, McGloin loves chucking the ball downfield, so Michigan will have to expect the deep ball. Well thrown or not.

Besides me, who else is filled with dread every time an opposing quarterback chucks the ball downfield?  All of you?  That's what I thought.  The final analysis probably sums up how we should view this:

McGloin appears to be cut from the Nick Sheridan mold. Not very fast. Not very tall. Not a lot of arm strength. But he makes up for it all with moxie! But before we get ahead of ourselves remember one thing, Nick Sheridan won a game or two as a starting quarterback. Michigan would be well advised to take this quarterback, walk-on or otherwise, seriously. [Emphasis added]

That said, I was in attendance at Beaver Stadium when this happened:

And it was glorious.

Besides me, who else thinks this could very well happen again, but with this guy as the perpetrator?

You know he is a scrapper, and probably has some type of boxing experience

The huddle may smell of Guinness and he is probably known to have a good joke or two

Karaoke's Danny Boy

I have no idea how this will translate onto the field, but i'm sure GERG will have something waiting him

Ah, pub cans are the best.  I prefer them to the bottles.  I found a Sam's Club or Costco (can't remember which) that sold Guinness pub cans in 24 packs for $25.  Glorious moment.

I expect to see a post next week titled "Matt McGloin: Does anyone know the location his other arm!? (If found, please return to PSU athletic department for reattachment.)"

Sheridan and McGloin vs. Minnesota:

C/ATT   YDS CMP% AVG TD INT RAT
N. Sheridan 18/30   203 60 6.8 1 0 127.84
OPP CMP ATT YDS CMP% AVG LNG TD INT RAT
McGloin @Minnesota 6 13 76 46.2 5.8 42 2 1 130.65

Sheridan was facing a MINN team that went 7-3.

McGloin only played about 5/8 of the game. Sheridan played a whole one.

Disclaimers: Small sample size, Sheridan's best game of life, etc.

Not one recruiting service even gave this guy a star. PSU should be penalized every time he takes the field or at least renew their membership to Scout before this becomes the norm in Happy Valley.

He went to West Scranton High, my school(Riverside) plays them every year. I was already graduated by the time he played but my brother played against him and went 3-0, keep in mind we were class A and they were a AAA sized school. From what I remember they had good players but horrid coaching, main players were McGloin, Hubie Graham(TE went to Ilinois) and Eric Schrive(tackle for PSU) I'm not sure they ever made it past the first round of the playoffs in his career. Also my brother said he was very clunky while running hated being hit and talked like Eminem(evidence in headband) Aparently he was a much better baseball player than QB and had a lot of offers for pitching
