MMB Show Selection 2010

Submitted by MGoKereton on
Haven't seen an article about this since the past summer, so I thought I'd put one up. Gathered from responses throughout the year, the show selection was poorer than in years past. I fully agree. The Opera show was something I believed that should have never stepped foot into the Big House. Although it was one of our more (if not most) demanding shows, the audience doesn't really care. Some simple guidelines before you post: We know the band needs to be louder. This is just a forum to see which songs are the most requested (like Ecstasy of Gold from the topic last summer, which I seriously hope happens). Also, no Boerma bashing, please. Make your own forum if you want to do that. I know the shows that had the most positive feedback were 2008's Boy Bands show and the "Save Cody" show. This is the kind of stuff that belongs in the Big House: something that pumps up the crowd (as well as the band. We feed off of you guys too). I encourage you guys to be as imaginative as possible. If you guys want the band to play the Star Wars opening fanfare while unveiling a giant "May the Forcier be with you" flag, say so.

Unveil a Stanzi banner when we play Iowa for homecoming. Follow this with a recording of Obama saying "Go Blue" during the commencement speech.

Are the shows that are either popular things that the entire student section knows and likes, or the sketch shows. They're the most likely section of the crowd to get involved and that makes the whole thing better. Something like the Spamalot show from I want to say 2005 should happen every year. I'll second the Blues Brothers show too.

Shit you could invite them to the Big House for the game since they're fans. I could also go for a Foo Fighters show, but that's just me. From a student's perspective, I want to listen to something I've actually heard of or something that's a sketch where it is interesting or both. I'd say nearly all of the halftime shows last year were just completely boring, with the opera one being the worst of them all.

I get that I'm an old-timer now, having marched in the 80's, but the very fact that the UM band could even consider doing an opera show confirms everything every old-timer has come to believe the subsequent generation of MMB has become - much too quiet, too meek in attitude and repertoire and DOESN'T THE MARCHING BAND EVER MARCH ANYMORE? Sorry. Also, no Lady Gaga, unless it's in the spoof show.

Agreed. No one cared and at least from where I was sitting, no one could really even hear. What's worse is that this show followed a haphazard, amateurish, but really friggin' loud Delaware State performance that was met with a standing O. I remember the groans as the MMB took the field after them and "...a day at the opera" was announced over the PA. Not cool. So, if it seems like the functional equivalent of a high school band show will receive more praise than the MMB's, don't do that show. I'd love a Blues Brothers medley, but really, I'd love anything that doesn't require complete silence in my section to identify.

Classic TV theme songs... Dallas Cheers Three's Company any of those plus others could work. MSU actually had a pretty neat salute to technology show featuring, iPod commerical songs, classic cellphone ringtones and the Numa Numa guy.
