MLive article on Hutch....great read
Quinn wrote a really nice piece on Hutch, her history, and her thoughts on where she's at and what's next for her. For someone who doesn't usually talk much about herself, it's a nice view into her life and what has driven her to be the most successful coach at Michigan.

His current relatively low performance aside, it's surprising to me that anyone would have been a more successful coach overall than Red Berenson. Hutchins is a great coach and a great representative of Michigan.
Funny you say driven...Hutch is a TERRIBLE driver. Drove directly behind her from the State St exit on 94 (exit 177) until she turned into the Wilpon Complex. She kept slamming on her breaks, sometimes for lights or drivers in front of her but sometimes for no reason at all, she was constantly checking her hair in the rearview mirror and constantly petting her dog who was in the front seat. Finally, she slammed on her breaks and turned last minute into the Wilpon Complex. I'm thinking 'if I get into an accident with Hutch because of her shitty driving, absolutely no one will take my side'.
But yeah she's one of the greatest Michigan coaches ever, regardless of sport. I get that.
You sound like Chico Escuela's love child. You should write a tell-all book about Hutch's driving.
(Actually a pretty funny story. It's easier to put up with someone's awful driving when you have a sense of who they are, at least in my experience.)
when I read she was checking her hair. For some reason, I don't see Hutch as giving a shit about how her hair looks. Vanity just doesn't suit her.
Thanks for sharing.
Right?? But when you think about it, it's always kind of in the same shape. She just keeps her maintenance of it on the DL.
Our Hutch is a closet Diva! Who knew?
That and 2.25 will get you a cup of coffee.
She drives just like my mom. Your neck hurts when you get out the car.
Sure you weren't tailgating to get a better look through her mirror?
/LOL!
Great article. I honestly didn't know she went to MSU. It's amazing what she's been able to build here.

Too bad she DIDN'T set fire to most of Lansing when she got the field burning...
Great coach and great program.
She came to talk to our class when I took John Bacon's course on college athletics, and she seemed almost uncomfortable to the point of nervousness with having to talk about herself--it was almost a bit odd. And incredibly refreshing.
The whole story on her Title IX lawsuit when she was an athlete at MSU is absolutely fascinating.
I remember that lawsuit against Michigan State for Title IX violations (the men's basketball team and the women's basketball team were getting ridiculously different accommodations and per diems on road trips), but I had no idea that was Carol Hutchins. It certainly made some headlines when it happened.
That was one of the first Title IX lawsuits in college athletics. It seems like a no-brainer looking back, but I think it was one of the first things that caused universities to realize the implications of the law. Again, no idea until today that was Hutch.
She was actually kind of weird about it, almost like she didn't want people to know she was involved. Yet when she told the stories about how different things were, and how blatantly horrible it was to be a female athlete in comparison to the men... Yeesh.
It was the same if not worse for the U-M women in the early days.
They preferred playing road games because of how bad the facility situation was.
This is a good read about that from a few years back.

I noticed the caption of Assistant Coach Brundage playing in the Olympics calls her an alumnus. I knew she played at UCLA in college, but I didn't know she later got a master's at Michigan.
Hutch, as Bo said many years ago, is still the best damn coach on this campus.

Hutch and Bo were cut from the same mold. They both have the same determination to excel and to coach. They inspire the same love an loyalty in their players and in the fan base in general. Harbaugh is an apple that has not fallen far from that tree as well.
I hope Hutch sticks around for awhile yet. She's an incredible ambassador for the university, and she's earned every right to end her career the way she wants to.
The article mentions Hutch retiring.
No thanks. What a horrifying thought. We're going to more WCWS and winning more B1G Championships in a yearly basis now than we ever have.
It's like she's getting better with age. And the recruiting!! Wait until you see some of the kids coming in the future. We have top-2 national pitchers coming in in the 2017, 2018 and 2019 classes.

She needs to stay until Romo is done playing pro ball and ready to come back to UM and take over the program.
She's not even 60 yet. I bet she could coach another decade if she wanted to.
was anyone else surprised at Hutch's salary, or lack thereof? I was thinking that she might be more highly compensated given her success.
Agreed. She deserves to earn more than that. I certainly hope she gets bonuses for every B1G championship and WCWS appearance.
That was a great read. I did not know about her brother and that was really really sad to read. I also did not know she was quite the troublemaker but I guess I can see that.
I dont know who is given credit for starting riots in East Lansing but for all I know it was Hutch who started the tradition.
The SB stadium will be named after her some day.
Hell, they should do it now.
