McGary is on ESPN 3 right now and Glenn Robinson is in the game that follows. McGary is coming off the bench to start the game. It will be nice to see Robinson vs the Nations top talent, since I really haven't seen him play live this year. GO BLUE!
Mitch McGary/Glenn Robinson III. All American Championships
McGary's got 5 points. Missed a bunny dunk, but put it back, and had a nice and-1 through some contact.
Love the fact that he's actually hustling to get steals in a game when everyone seems not to care at all.
McGary has looked pretty good so far, minus that weak dunk attempt he missed
Are there any fans at this game? The arena sounds empty!
Do you guys think McGary is really 6'11"?
Calhoun is incapable of passing the ball.
nice missed dunk
This is basketball?
No, this is that stupid game Clark Kellog watches the kids play. You know, the one where they use a pumpkin instead of a ball, and if they foul too much, the kids get Dairy Queened.
Pretty poor play. McGary looks OK, I thought he'd be a better athlete, but he seems to be tough and hustles and has a good understanding of the game.
He doesn't look like a top 10 recruit to me, but he'll bring sorely needed size and toughness next year.
I would love it if McGary is at least as good as Morgan has been the last two years plus a post up move or two.
If we could get solid play from Morgan, McGary, and Horford with maybe some spot play from McLimans at the Big Men spots that would be fantastic.
A main problem from the past two years was the drop off when Morgan had to sit. If we didn't have to worry about that as much next year we'd be in much better shape.
I think RS Freshman Max Bielfeldt could have a big role on this squad next year. He seems like a tough, big ten rebounder and had a year to get acclimated to Beilein's system.
From what I've seen I'd say McGary is a huge step up from Morgan, assuming he continues to develop which I expect. He's way beyond what Morgan was coming out of high school. I think it's important to keep in mind that a guy like McGary, who makes his living off hustle and sound fundamental big man play rather than the flash, will not shine in a game like the one he just played in where no one else is hustling and there's no team play whatsoever. In most college programs a guy like McGary would be gold, whereas most of the other guys will be best utilized at the Kentuckys and Baylors of the world (basically a lot of individuals rather than a strong team game). Obviously every team wants the best and most skilled players in the country but a lot of them will have to be broken of their selfish habits before they can help the team reach max potential (see Austin Rivers). I don't read too much into McGary's poor performances in the ESPN games we've seen because it's just not the right stage for him. When the ballhandlers are all flashy players looking to get theirs, the big men aren't going to be highlighted other than to clean up all the misses.
You have to remember McGary is a year older than Morgan was coming out of high school so he should look a little more polished. His upside also, might not be as great because of this. That being said Belein and his assistants are great teachers and I can't wait to see what they can do with McGary.
Everyone was speculating that McGary would be a one and done. I don't see that happening. I think his shortcomings may become a little more obvious in the college game and I think he sticks at least two or three years. He will be a beast though. Something we haven't had for awhile.
Just to clarify this, as Mr. Miggle alludes to below, Morgan during his freshman year (when he redshirted) was 18 (born 9-15-91), while McGary will arrive on campus at age 20 (born 6-6-92).
Morgan is less than one year older than McGary, but already finishing his third year at UM. No doubt McGary is a much better HS player than Morgan. Morgan has improved greatly while at UM, hopefully McGary will continue to improve too.
Hows robinson looking?
Did GR3's game start yet? I have ESPN3 up on my XBox and when I click on the game it says "Your Event is About To Begin."
Edit: never mind. KK is on top of it
tonite starting at 9
GR3 is closer to 6'7 cause Miles Simon the guy who interviewed him is 6'5.
Sam Dekker is one of my best friends' cousin. He's going to be a tough matchup for just about everyone in the B1G next year.
The talent coming into the Big Ten is extremely impressive.
Dekker is, without question, the real deal. This was my first chance to see him play, and he's got all sorts of skills, great length, and long-distance runner style energy that allows him to contest all over the court.
The Big Ten is back in a big way as a hoops conference. This year's league was, of course, impressive, but the talent continues to flow into multiple programs and the league is poised to get even stronger and deeper.
GRIII. Oh. My.
WOW. We may be getting the steal of the 2012 class with GR3.
I turned on the stream and right when it popped up i saw GRIII on get a pass on the transition and absolutely throw it down. He's looking good.
Iowa is getting an all-american?? Whaaa??
with GRIII, I wouldn't mind trying to steal him to add to the 2012 class! Ha. Wishful thinking.
that kid is essentially exactly what we need to back up Trey at the point.
I don't think Spike Albrecht is that clone, unfortunately.
Game isn't over yet but he's been declared MVP...just missed two crucial free throws with his team up 1 so his squad could end up losing.
GRIII - MVP
Missed two free throws down the stretch that would have won the game. His team lost by 1. Gotta make the freebies G!
